To all whom t may concern: I
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. HEIDE, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of lfilichigan, have invented a new and useful Carburetor, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to carburetors, and is particularly an improvement over the carburetor disclosed in my co-pending application Serial No. 107,822, filed July e, i916.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a novel and improved valve structure for controlling the flow of fuel into the reservoir or iioat chamber whereby the liquid fuel therein is retained at a predetermined level.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:-

1n carrying out the invention, there is provided a fuel receptacle or cup 1 having secured upon its rim a removable cover 2, which has seated thereon and extending diametrically across the same, the horizontal air suction pipe 3, provided at its discharge end with suitable means 4 for attaching it to the intake manifold or conduit of an internal combustion engine. rThe receptacle 1 is provided at a suitable point thereof above the fuel level with an air vent aperture 5.
A fuel cup 7 is engaged upwardly through a central opening in the. cover 2 and is threaded upwardly through the bottom of the pipe 3, said cup having an outstanding flange 7 a bearing upwardly against the cover 2. A fuel nozzle or tube 8 depends from the bottom of the cup 7 centrally thereof to dip in the fuel within the receptacle 1, and the flow of fuel from the receptacle into the lower end of the tube 8 is controlled by means of a valve 10 seatable against and cooperable with the lower end of the tube. The valve 10 is carried by and extends upwardly from the intermediate portion of a lever 12 within the receptacle 1 having one end (not shown) pivoted to a hanger (not shown) attached to the cover 2 and disposed adjacent to one side of the receptacle. The other free end of the levier threadedly engages the lower threaded terminal 14C of a vertical stein or spindle 15 journaled for rotation through an upstanding lug 11 mounted upon the cover 2 at one side of the pipe 3.
An air suction member 9 is fitted within the pipe 3, and the rim of the fuel cup 7 is threaded upwardly into said member 9, said member providing a constricted portion of the air suction passage with which the mouth of the fuel cup 7 communicates.
The lug 11 is provided near one end with a fuel inlet passage 19, and a fuel supply pipe 19 is connected to the lug in communication with the passage 19, while a depending nipple 19n connects at its upper end with the lug 11 and extends downwardly from the cover into the receptacle, to deliver the fuel into said receptacle.
In order to maintain the fuel level normal within the receptacle 1, a float 2O is provided therein, the same being hingedly connected at one side, as at 21, with the cover 2 and having openings 22 and 22', the iirst mentioned opening accommodating the fuel tube 8, and the opening 22 accommodating a cap-shaped valve 23 seated upon an upstanding pin 24: carried by the hinged member 25 which is secured to the float. The valve 23 can swing loosely upon the pin 24 and is seatable upwardly against the lower end of the nipple 19a for shutting ofi the flow of fuel into the receptacle or reservoir 1. The upper conical end of the valve 23 can havea cover 23 of rubber or other compressible material, and it is preferable to provide an upstanding pin 232L upon the apex of the cap 23 vto enter the nipple 19L and guide the valve. Itis evident that when the fuel level lowers, the float 21 swings downwardly, thereby permitting the cap 23 to unseat and allow the fuel to flow into the receptacle, and the float in being raised to normal position carries the valve 23 upwardly with the pin 23a to seat said valve and stop the dow of fuel. As seen in Figure 2, a U-shaped strip 25 is mounted on the pin 24 in the opening 22 surrounding the valve 23 with its upper; terminals bent. toV ward one another, as at 25, to overhang said valve, whereby should the valve fail to..un seat by reason of becoming stuck to its seat, or for like reasons, the float iny swinging downwardly will bring one or both, of the fingers, or terminals 25L against the valve to foi-,ee itV from its seat.
The construction here` shown and` illustrated isfeonsidered the preferred embodiment of the invention but it is to be underv stood, that the same may be modifiedv and is claimedvas new is l'. In a carburetor, a fuel reservoir, a float mounted therein, a fuel conduit. extending inthe; reservoir-and disposed above the float, a pin extending upwardly from the float, a
valve mounted loosely upon the pin and adapted to seat in thefuel conduit to close the same,v and;Ineans;v adapted to disengage the valve from the fuel conduit upon the descentv of the float.
2.- In a carburetor a fuel reservoir, a floatV mounted therein, a fuel conduit extending mounted upon the pin and provided with inturned ends adapted top engage the valve to disengage the same` from the fuel pipe upon the descent of the float.
