SASH-LOCKING DEVICE.
T0 all whom t may Concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ZAK, a citizen of Poland, residing at Bergholz, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locking Devices, of which the following is a specilication.
This inventionrelates to certain new and useful improvements in sash locking devices and has particular reference to the provision of an eilicient means for locking either the upper or lower sash of a window in closed position `and the provision of readily acoessible means operable by hand or foot for readily releasing the locking device of either sash at will.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a lookin device of the above kind embodying` Simp icity of construction and efficiency of operation.
A further object of the invention is to enerally simplify and improve devices of t is kind.
A further object of the invention is to provide means countersunk within the inner faces of the upper and lower frame members of a window frame for automatically engaging bolts rigidly fast-cned upon the lower rail of the lower sash and the upper rail of the upper sash when said sashes are closed for lockin the same in this position and means operable from within the dwell-v ing at a point near the lfloor of the dwelling for releasing either of said locking means at will. A still further object of the invention is to provide the frames of sliding sashes with manually releasable locking devices and means for automatically projecting said sashes to a partially open position upon release of the locking devices out of the path of the locking bolts of the latter whereby said sashes may then be readily manually adjusted to the desired open position without requiring holding of the locking devices in closed position.
With the above general objects in view and others that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

Referring more in detail to the several views, the usual window construction is shown embodying hollow side sash frame members 5 and similar top and bottom frame members 6 and 7 respectively in which a pair of sashes 8 and 9 vertical movement, the sash 8 being the upper one. and being lowered for opening the same andthe sash 9 being the lower sash which is raised for opening it. As is usual in windows of this class, both sashes are adapted to be associated with a balancing device such as a cord and weight for maintaining the windows in partially open position at any point which they may be set, but as this balancing construction does not form any part of the present invention, the same has not been shown.
The top and bottom railsrespectively of the sashes 8 and 9 are provided with arrow head bolts 10 which are preferably rigidly attached to a securing plate 11 held to the rail of the sashl by means of screws 12 or the like. Locking devices of similar construction for cooperation with the bolts 10 are provided in each of the window frame members 6 and 7 and each embodies a face plate 13 provided with transverse guides 14 in which are slidably mounted a pair of opposed locking bolts 15 which are normally projected toward each other by means of springs 16 so as to engage behind the shoulders 17 of the arrow head bolt 17 of are slidably mounted forl the adjacent sash when the latter is closed, the face plate 13 being provided with a central opening 18 for permitting passage of the arrow head bolt 10 therethrough so that the shoulders 17 may be engaged by the spring pressed bolts 15 and complete closing of the sashes-will be permitted. The adjacent ends of the spring pressed bolts 15 are beveled to engage the sloping faces of the arrow head bolt 10 so as to permit ready passage of the latter bolt passed said bolts 15 while positively preventing raising of the window until said spring pressed bolts 15 are sufliciently separated to disengage from the shoulders 17.
Means is provided for simultaneously separating the bolts 15 of each pair and this means includes al lever 18 having three arms, one of which is slidably and pivotally associated with one bolt 15 of each pair by a pin' and slot connection as at 197 another arm of said lever being pivotally attached as at 20 to an operating link 21, and the third arm 22- of which lever is pivoted with a lateral pin 23 which engages an edge of one arm of a bell crank vlever 24 which is pivoted as at 25V to the face plate 13. The
lever 18 is pivoted as at 18 to said face plate and the other arm of the bell crank lever 24 is slidably and pivotally associated with the other bolt 15 of said pair of bolts by means of a pin and slot connection25. It will thus be seen that when a pull is exerted in one direction, upon the link 21 the lever 18 is rocked for sliding one of the bolts of each pair away from the other and at the same time the arm 22 and pin 23 of the lever 18 causes rocking movement of the bell crank lever 24 to also move the second bolt of eachA pair of bolts 15 away from the first named bolt of said pair so that said bolts 15 are Vsimultaneously moved away from each other for-disengaging them from the shoulders 17.
The link 21 connected to the upper sash locking mechanism is pivoted as at 26 to one end of an arm'27 which is secured upon a yvertical rock shaft 28 suitably journaled in the horizontal arms ofangular bearingv brackets 29 which are fixed within one of said side frame members 5 and the rock shaft 28 is of such length as to extend-downwardly through the portion of the wall 30 ofthe dwelling directly beneath said frame member 5 where the base board 31 is provided withv an elongated slot 32 through which a'handle 33 projects into the room, said handle 33 being secured as shown at 34 inFigure 4 at its inner end to the lower end portion of said rock shaft 28. The rock shaft 28 is rotatable within a shorter hollow rock shaft 35 that extends from the lower frame member 7 to a point just above the slot 32, and another handle 36 is fixed upon the lower end of the tubular shaft 35 as at 37 and projects through another elongated and spaced slot 38 provided in the base board 31 near to and above the slot 32. The upper end ofthe tubular shaft 35 has an arm 38 secured thereon and the other end of said arm 38 is pivotally connected as at 39 to one end of the lower link 21. The connections of the handles 33 and 36 and the arms 27 and 378 with the shafts 28 and 35 are preferably of such kind as to enable angular adjustment of said handles and arms so as to permit the proper manipulation of the bolts 15 and as the shaft 35 is independent of the shaft 28, either one or both of the sash locking devices may be manipulated as desired.
In order to project the sashes 8 and 9 to a partially open'position immediately upon release of the locking devices and automatically so that the bolts 10 will be held out of thepath of the spring pressed bolts 15, thus enabling-the handles 33 .and 36 to be released for permitting the bolts 15 to again move toward each other without preventing the operator to further open said sashes, and means is provided in eachiof the frame members 6 and 7 of the construction clearly shown with respect to one of the same `in Figure 5.
This means embodiesV a pair of plates 40 and 41 respectively adapted to be secured against the inner and outer faces of the inner wall of the frame members 6 or 7 and having a spring pressed bolt 42 slidably mounted through central apertures provided therein, the bolt 43 being normally projected beyond the inner face of the inner wall of the frame member so as to engage the ad-l jacent rail of the adjacent sash and thereby urge said sash toa partly open position wherein the arrow head bolt 10 of said sash j is inwardly of the bolts 15 arsuliicient distance to be unlocked from the latter. The spring for urging the bolt 43 is denoted by the numeral 44 and surrounds said bolt between an abutment 45 thereon and another guide-plate 46 which is rigidly connectedto fromthe plate 40 by means of posts 47. Two of the sash projecting devices such as shown in Figure 5 are preferably em-j ployed with each of the frame members 6 and 7 and preferably at the corners of the window frame 5 as clearly'shown with respect tothe lower sash projectors in Figure 17 the two upper sash projectors being hidden by the upper sash being shown in locked closed position. lThe placement of the sash projectors at the corners of theframe equalizes the force of these devices so that binding of the sashes is prevented and opening of said sashes to a slight extent will be insured. Y
1n operation, the .sashes 8 and 9 are forced to closed positions so as to cause forcible separation of the pairs ofbolts 15 of each locking device by the passage of thecarrow head bolts 10 therebetween until the bolts rio 15 are engaged behind the shoulders 17 of said bolts 10. When it is desired to release either one or both of the sashes S and 9, the proper handle or handles ar swung to the left causing the shaft connected to such handle to be rocked for exerting a pull upon the link 21 thereof and separation of the bolts-15 connected thereto, against the action of the springs 16. Immediately upon disengagement of the bolts 15 from the shoulders 17, the projecting devices associated with the particular sash released immediately force said sash to a partially open position with the bolt 10 out of the path of the bolts 15 and unheld by the latter. The handle which has been manipulated may then be released for allowing the parts of the rocking device to return to normal position and further opening of the sash or sashes may then be readily had. A coil spring 48 may be associated with each of the shafts 28 and 35 for assisting the springs 16 in returning the parts of the locking mechanism to normal position, said springs being suitably anchored to a stationary part and to a part movable with said shafts as shown in Figure 4c so that when the handles are moved for rotating these shafts to release the bolts 15, said springs are coiled or twisted to store up sufficient force for returning the shafts back to their normal position by the unwinding or untwisting of said springs.
From the foregoing description, it is believed that the construction and operation as well as the advantages of the present invention will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art.
Minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A sash locking device comp-rising a vertical rock shaft provided with means for mounting the same in a window frame and having an arm fixed upon the upper end portion thereof, a tubular rock shaft surrounding the first named rock shaft and rotatable relative thereto, an arm fixed upon the upper portion of said tubular rock shaft, locking devices provided with means for mounting the same within the upper and lower members of the window frame and normally yieldingly held in locking position, means operatively connecting each of said arms with one of said locking devices, and means to independently rock either one of said shafts relative to the other including a handle upon the lower portion of each shaft adapted to extend inwardly through the wall of the dwelling.
2. In a sash locking device, a base plate having a pair of opposed spring pressed bolts with' beveled adjacent ends and normally projected toward each other, a bell crank lever pivoted upon the plate and having the end of one arm slidably and pivotally connected to one of said bolts, a three-arm lever pivoted to the base plate and having one arm loosely and pivotally connected to the other bolt, a pin projecting downwardly from another arm of said three-arm lever and engaging the outer edge of the other arm of said crank lever, and an operating link attached to the remaining arm of the threearm lever whereby a pull in one direction upon said link will cause separation of said bolts.
