AIVIUSEEIENT DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4., 1922.
Application filed June 10, 1920. Serial No. 387,924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIAN C. CALLAIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Amusement Devices, of which the followin is a specification, reference being had therem to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in amusement devices and has for its object to provide a merry-go-round having balanced pairs of seats and propelled by the hand or foot movements of the passengers.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a device embodying my invention, parts being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a fragment of the same, portions being shown in section.
Fig. 3 is an end View of one of the seat-carrying members and its driving mechanism.
The supporting frame 4 carries the annular rack 5 (having the flat horizontal flange 6) and the concentric support 7, having the ball-bearings 8 and vertical pintle 9. Upon the support 7 the spider 10 is revolvably and removably seated (see Fig. 2) having sockets 11 to receive the seat-carrying beams 12, pins 13 serving to lock said beams 12 in place.
Each of the beams 12 is provided at its outer terminal with a saddle-seat 14 and a reciprocating arm 15 having the handle-bar 16 and foot-bar 17. The arm 15 carries the pawl 18, said pawl 18 rotating the axle 20 and gear 21 through the ratchet 19, the gear 21 meshing with the gear 22 on the shaft 23 to revolve the same with its fixed pinion 24. The wheel 25 is loosely mounted on the shaft 23 and travels on the upper face of the flange 6.
The shaft 23 is mounted in hangers 26 so that each of the beams 12 has its own driving mechanism attached to it and removable with it from the device by withdrawing the pin 13 and extracting the beam 12 from the socket 11.
g the spider 10 having as many of the sockets 11 as may be desired. anism may preferred.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is
1. In an amusement device, a circular rack, having a horizontal flange; a bearing having a vertical pintle and concentrically mounted within said rack; a spider having sockets and revolvably mounted on said pintle; seat-carrying beams detachably mounted in said spider; a reciprocating arm having a handle-bar and a foot-bar and mounted at the outer terminal of each beam; a shaft mounted beneath each of said beams, having pinions at its ends, the outer pinion geared to said reciprocating arm, and the inner pinion engaging said rack.
In an amusement device, a circular rack having a horizontal flange; a bearing having a vertical pintle and concentrically mounted within said rack; a spider having sockets and revolvably mounted on said pintle; seatcarrying beams detachably mounted in said spider; a reciprocating arm having a handle bar and a foot-bar and mounted at the outer terminal of each beam; a shaft mounted beneath each of said beams, having pinions at its ends, the outer pinion geared to said reciprocating arm, and the inner pinion engaging said rack, and a wheel loosely mounted on said shaft and traveling on the upper face of said flange.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
The driving mechbe employed on one beam only if JULIAN O. CALLAIS.
