PAPER-MAKING- MACHINE.
T 0 all 10 from it may concern Be it known that l, ALoNzo ALDRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Paper-Making Machines, of which the following is a full, clear. concise, and exact description. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to paper making machines, particularly machines known in the trade as Fourdrinier machines.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a practical and advantageous construction of Fourdrinier machine.
Another object of the invention is to arrange for the quick and ready placing of a new wire in the machine.
Another object of the invention is to arrange for placing this new wire on a machine where the table is shaken or vibrated, such machines being known as shaker machines.
Another object of the invention is to simplify the operation of placing the new wire on the machine, and also to utilize mechanism already incorporated in certain machines of this characterfor that purpose.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. l is a side elevation of a paper machine embodying my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the machine arranged for the insertion of a new wire;

Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of an end portion of a modified form of machine; and

'Beferring to the drawings. and particularly to Figs. 1 to,4 inclusive, I show a Four drinier machine having a table 1 supporting a series of rolls 2-2 carrying the wire 3. The latter runs over a breast roll 4 at the left hand or feed end of the table and also over another roll 5 at the other or right hand end of the table, and thence over the couch rolls. It also runs over rolls 6, 7 8 and 9 on posts or supports 10, 11, 12 and 13, respectively, and also runs under a roll 14 carried by a swinging tension device 15 pivoted at 16 so as to permit the roll 14 to to be swung bodily upward by means of a Specification of Letters Patent.

The machine shown is a shaker type of machine. the table 1 having its left hand or feed end suspended or mounted to permit lateral or sidewise movement and the right hand end being mounted on a post orrocker 20. The latter has a projection 21 adapted to accommodate the shaking or vibrating movement of the feed end of the table, and also to permit a certain amount of play due to the raising and lowering of the feed end. The mechanism for shaking the feed end of the table is not shown, as the same is well known in the art, being usually a bell crank arrangement connected with the table near the breast roll.
The feed end of the table 1 is suspended by cables 23 whose lower ends are provided with couplings or loops 24 engaging projections or brackets 25 on the end of the table 1. The cables 23 run up to and around winding drums 26 which are arranged to be driven by a worm 27 mounted on a rotary shaft 28. The shaft 28 may be connected by means of clutch 29 with an idle gear 30 meshing with pinion 31 on electric driving motor 32. Clutch 29 is controlled by a handle 33. Thus the feed end of the table 1 may be adjusted vertically by means of the handle 33. motor 32 and cables. 23 so as to give the table either an upward or downward pitch or maintain it substantially level.
The head box 35 is also mounted for vertical adjustment, being arranged to slide up and down in vertical corner posts 3636. Adjustment of this feed box is secured by means of cables 37-437 whose lower ends are provided with hooks 38-38 and whose upper ends run over winding drums 39 and 40. The drum 39 is connected by link belt 41 with drum 40 and the latter is driven by worm 42 on rotary shaft 43. Clutch 44 controlled by lever 45 connects shaft 43 with idle gear 31, whereby the feed box 35 may be raised or lowered by operating handle 45.
The head box 35 is connected With table 1 by means of dam clamp 47whereby head box and feed end of the table may rise and fall together. Sides 48 are made flexible enough to permit the table to vibrate with out Vibrating the head box 35. Apron board 49 with hinged end 50 extends from head box 35 to breast roll 4.
Deckel wheels 51 and 52 are mounted at the opposite ends of the table and deelrel straps 53 extend between the same and deckel strap boards 5.4. are mounted on table 1 by means of supports and 56.
In order to permit the placing ol a new wire on the machine, arrangement is i'nade for lifting the deckel strap mechanism upwardly from the table 1. and then moving the table bodily in a lateral direction well to one side of its normal position. To such end the table is provided with wheels and 58 and tracks 59 and 60 are provided tor said Wheels 57 and. 58, respectively, The track 49 is supported by front and rear posts 61. and 62 respectively and the track 60 is supported by front post 12 and rear post 63. Other tracks 64 may be'provided at the ends of tracks 59 and 60. with their outer ends supported by supplemental posts 65.
For moving the wheels 57 and 5% on said tracks, a motor 67 is provided. being; preferably mounted on and carried by the table 1. Said motor is connected by gear 68 with worm 69 on rotary driving; shalt 7'0. The opposite ends of this shaft 7 are connected by gears 71 and 72 with wheels 57 and 58. so that the operation ot the motor 67 will rotate the shaft and thereby turn the wheels 57 and 58 and thereby cans:- the table 1 to move laterally on tracks 59 60 and 64.
Thus when it is desired to put a new wire on the machine the decks] strap 53 with all its appurtenances is lifted as shown in Fl 2. This may be done by cranes which are shown diagramatically. The dam clamp t? is then removed and the teed end of the table is elevated by the cable 2 sutlicientl y to permit the rails 59 and 60 to be put in position (Fig. 2); and then the table is lowered sufficiently to allow the wheels 57 and 58 to rest upon said rails 59 and (it). Rocker 20 is then removed. The whole table is then run out on the rails or tracks 641-. the rails or tracks 59 and 60 are removed and one end of wire is slipped over the bottom couch roll in the usual manner. The couch and wire are then elevated and wire is unrolled toward breast roll so as to extend along the machine in the space usually cccupied by the table. Then pipes are inserted to lift the upper ply of the wire and hold lower ply down. The wire is arranged in an irregular fashion, as shown in Fig. 2, with various irregularities in its lower ply or reach to accommodate various parts or elements on the table when the latter is pushed back into its normal position. The rocker 20 is then replaced as are also the tracks 59. and 60 which were previously re moved. By means of the electric motor 6'7. thetable is then run back on tracks 64., 59 and 60 to its original or normal position. The feed end of the table is then engaged by the couplings 24 on the cables 23 and winding drums 26 are actuated as to elevate the feed end of the table slightly and thereby permit the removal Oil tracks and (ill. These tracks together with tracks 64. and. temporary posts 65 are then removed. The couch roll is lowered and moved. to its normal position where it is placed and secured in its bearings, the various pipes are removed so that the wire may rest upon the table rolls 2 and extend around the breastroll 4: and under and over the various rolls below the table. The deckel strap 53 and its atta hments are lowered into place and the machine is ready for operation with a new wire in position.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I show a. machine in which the right hand end portion of the table, the end portion carrying the vacuum boxes. is stationary and does not vibrate with the rest oi the table. his stationary portion is indicated at 80 and is pivotally connected by means of a pivot RI. with the remaining portion 1" ol' the table which is connected to shaking or vibrating mechanism so that it is shaken or vibrated in-the operation of the machine. in this modified lorm I show posts or uprights S2 and 83 supporting the stationary portion 80 of the table and these posts 82 and 83 are provided with cam levers 84!; connected with cam mechanism (not shown), by which tracks R585 (Fig. 6). may be elevated to act against wheels 87-87 on the table portion 80 and thereby elevate said wheels and table portion. A rotary shaft 70 is mounted on the table portion '1 and connected with a rotary shai't 88 on the table portion 80 by means of a. universal joint 99. whereby the rotation of the shaft '70 will also rotatesha'lt S8 and thereby rotate wheels 87 by means oi intermediate gears 90 and 91.. Post 12 at right hand end of table portion 1 is also preferably provided with cam lever 84; operating cam mechanism not shown, so that another track 85 may be used in con nection with post 12 and caused to elevate said other track 85 and the right hand end of table portion 1.
In this arrangement the feed end of the table may be elevated by means of electric motor winding drums and housing cables as previously described in connection with the machine of Figs. 1 to 4; but the other or right hand end 80 of the table will not be so elevated, but will be elevated by means of cam mechanism actuated by cam levers 84. Thus when the table is elevated, its opposite ends being raised by these two different means and when the main and supplemental tracks are in position, an electric motor as previously described may be actuated So as to cause the entire table as an entity to move laterallv to one side of the position which it normally occupies. While in this position the wire may he slipped over the couch roll and then extended along the space where the table usually extends and by means of pipes the wire may be placed in such position as to afford space between its upper and lower plies for the insertion of the table. The lat ter may then be moved by means of the mo tor and connected mechanism so as to travel along the various tracks and resume its normal position, after which the various parts may be adjusted So as to allow the wire to assume an operative position upon the table and in respect to its various parts, after which the table may be adjusted and the tracks and temporary posts removed, placing the machine in position for operation with the new wire in place.
Reference is made to application Serial No. M59552 filed May 14:, 1921, in the name of myself and A. L. Lawson for paper making machines, said application disclosing and claiming certain of the broad features of construction and operation set forth in this application. I
It will be understood that changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Vhat I claim is:
1. The combination of a Fourdrinier table made in sections and having its feed end made vertically and horizontally adjustable, and having its other end made stationary and pivotally connected with the feed end, means for elevating the first mentioned section of the table and separate means for elevating the other end thereof, wheels on both parts or sections of the table, a power generator with power transmitting connection for driving said wheels, and tracks therefor, on which said wheels may travel.
2. The combination of a l ourdrinier table made in sections and having its feed end vertically adjustable and laving its other end pivotally connected wit said feed end,
flexible connectors for supporting and raising and lowering the feed end of the table, cam mechanism for raising and lowering the other end of the table, means carried by both ends of the table, a power generator on the table for power transmitting connection with said wheels, transversely arranged tracks on which Said wheels may travel and supports for said tracks.
3. The combination of a Fourdrinier table made in sections and provided with vacuum boxes and mounted for lateral shaking movement and also for bodily sidewise movement, tracks on which the table may be moved sidewise and power means attached to the table for moving the table back and forth laterally.

The combination of a Fourdrinier table provided with vacuum boxes and mounted for lateral shaking movement, and also for bodily sidewise movement, means for elevating the table, tracks and track supports to be inserted under the table when the same is elevated, the table being provided with wheels to travel on said tracks and power means attached to the table for moving the table back and forth in a sidewise direction.
5. The combination of a Fourdrinier table having its feed end mounted to permit raising and lowering, said table being provided with vacuum boxes, means for raising and lowering the feed end, wheels on the table, tracks and track supports arranged to be positioned below said wheels and power means for shifting the table laterally on said tracks, said table having two portions pivoted together, one including the feed end and the other carrying the vacuum boxes and means whereby the latter end may be independently raised and lowered to mount it upon its tracks.
