Application filed June 23,
To @ZZ who/mt may concern.'
Be it known that I, Isaac J. lTA'r'rs, a citizen ot the United States, residing at King City, in the county ot Monterey and State ot California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Bench Stop; and ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable yothers skilled in the art t6 which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a bench stop and it has t'or its primary object the provision ot a novel bench stop adapted to be applied to a woodworking bench and which may be easily and quickly adjusted for holding boards ot different thicknesses upon the bench while they are being planed.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision ot a bench stop ot the character stated which comprises a plate adapted to be inserted in the upper surface of the bench and having a socket member depending therefrom and a slidable stop member adapted to be locked at different positions within the socket member after being adjusted therein, the locking means including a gear which rests within a socket in the upper plate of the stop member. Y
lVith the 'foregoing and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of cooperating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings forming a part ot' the present application and in which:
Figure l is a top plan view ot the bench stop,
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same on the plane of line 2-2 ot Figure l.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the plane ot line 3-3 of lFigure 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure elis a transverse vertical section through a modiiied form of the invention.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, in which similar reference characters designate correspondingparts throughout the several views, l indicates the securing or supporting plate which is adapted to be se.- cured in a suitable opening provided therefor in a work bench, by suitable securing members l as through the corner portions Specification of Letters Patent.

ot the plate l. A socket member 3 depends Jfrom the plate l and has a plurality of inwardly directed teeth 4 formed on the inner tace ot the transversely curved wall thereof which connects two of the parallel walls at one longitudinal edge. The remaining longitudinal edges ot the parallel walls ot' the sockets 3 are connected by the straight vertical wall opposite the transversely curved wall as clearly shownA in the drawings. The vplate l is provided in its intermediate or central portion with an opening 2 having beveled* end walls 2 so as to accommodate the upper flat portion or main portion ot the stop member 5 so that the upper face thereot will be iush with the upper tace of the platel when the stop member 5 is in its lowermost position and resting on the walls 2 ot the opening 2 in the plate l. The stop member 5 is provided with serrations 6 on one edge against which the board is to be placed 'when the same is held in position upon the work bench. The stop member is provided in its upper side with a recess 7, the purpose of which will presently appear.
A depending guide 8 of substantially U- shape form in cross section is carried by the stop member 5 and adapted to ride in the socket 3 depending from the plate l. A transverse bar 8 is carried in the lower end of the depending guide. 8 and forms a bearing for the lower end of the locking bolt 9 which is extended therethrough and has a washer 9 or the like secured upon its lower extremity beneath the bar 8 so as to hold the locking bolt 9 in locking position, The locking bolt 9 has a laterallyY extended linger or arm 11 provided with af central notch l2 tor accommodating one of the teeth et when the locking bolt 9 is in normal position. The spring l0 is coiled around the locking bolt 9 and has one end secured to the finger or arm 11 while its opposite end is secured to the lower face of the top member 5, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, thereby resiliently retaining the finger or arm 1l in operative engagement or locking engagement with one of the teeth 4. It will also be seen that the upper end of the locking bolt 9 is extended centrally through the stop member 5 and then bent at a right angle to terminate in a tapering and horizontally curved releasing end which rests in the recess 7 and is adapted to be swung therein as will be later apparent. A thumb accommodating recess 14 is also provided at one side edge of the recess 7. It will therefore be seen that as the thumb of the operators hand rests in the recess 14, the :fourth linger of the same hand may be engaged with the releasing end 13 of the locking bolt 9 toswing the latter' toward the .recess 14, thereby turning` the locking bolt 9 so as to swing the finger or arm 11 thereof away from the tooth bar with which it is engaged `and permit the stop member with the guide 8 thereof to be adjusted longitudinall y or vertically with respect to the upper face of the work bench. As soon as the releasing end 13 is released, the spring 1() will serve to return the locked bolt 9 to operative position and thereby look the linger or arm. 11 of the locking bolt 9 with one of the teeth l to prevent further movement of the stop member 5 and thel depending guide 8 thereof.
In Figure et of the drawings I have shown a modilied form of the invention in which the recess 7 is of a slightly different form and a locking lever 15 is employed in place of the locking bolt 9. The locking lever 15 extends upwardly within the guide 8 and is mounted at its intermediate enlarged portion 1G on a transverse pivot pin 17 carried by the guide 8. The lever 15 has its lower end 1S curved slightly and terminates in an angularly extended locked finger 19 adapted to be engaged between two of the locking teeth 4 formed on the inner face of one wall of the depending socket member B-but which wall in this case may be in the form of a straight vertical wall, thereby providing a socket member which is of substantially rectangular form in cross section. The upper portion of the lever 15 is extended through a central elongated slot 2O in the stop member 5 and terminates in a finger grip 21 by means of which the lever 15 may be readily operated to withdraw the locking linger 19 thereof :from engagement with the teeth Ll. As soon as the finger grip is released, however, the locking lever 15 will be automatically returned to operative `posit-ion by the means of the spring 22 having one end con nested with the upper portion of the lever 15, above the pivot pin 17 for the lever 15, while the opposite end of the spring 22 is connected with one wallpof the extending guide 8, as clearly shown in the drawings.
It `is believed that the complete construction and operation as well as the advantages of the present invention may be readily7 understood from the foregoing paragraphs taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawings without further detailed description. Y
l/Vhile the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it will be understood that minor changes in the ldetails of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
1. A bench stop providing a socket member provided with retaining means therein, a guide member slidably mounted in the socket member, a stop plate on said guide member capable of disposition in its Lipper surface fiush with the upper surface of the socket member, said plate having Aa recess in fits upper surface, a key journaled in said plate, said key having ahead adapted to engage said retaining means, said key at the outer endV having an angular extremity disposed in ,said recess below the upper surface of the stop plate, and a spring secured to the stop plate and the key tensioned to normally maintain the key in engagement with ysaid retaining means.
2. A bench stop comprising a socket ineinber having teeth located therein, a guide movably mounted in said socket member, a stop plate carried by said guide, a looking lever pivotally mounted in said guide, a locking nger extended from said lever for engagement with certain 4of said teeth, one end of said lever projecting through said stop plate, and means to resliently maintain said locking lever in operative position.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
