Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES O. BUOK- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lampasas, in the county of Lampasas and State of Texas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Carpenters Squares, of which the follow ing is a specification.

This invention relates to carpenters squares and has special reference to that type of carpenters square commonly termed try square.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a try square having an improved attachment thereto for laying ofi? bevels at various angles.

Another object of the invention is to provide a try square of that class wherein the arrangement will be such that by an improved means without disturbing the 0rdi nary blade of the square a bevel may be laid off.

\Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.

I11 the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a square constructed in accordance with this invention, a certain cover plate be ing removed therefrom in order to show the working parts of the invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing all of the parts removed from the head.

I11 carrying out the objects of this invention there is provided a head 10 which may be either of wood or metal and secured to this head is a steel blade 11, the blade being held in the head by the usual screws 12. The head 10 is cut away as at 13, at an angle of 45 so that when using the device for rough work the part 13 may be set against the edge of a board or timber and the line drawn across said board or timber at 45. Thehead 10 furthermore has a shallow recess 14 formed on one side thereof so that a cover plate 15 may fit in said recess and lie flush with the side of the head. The usual protector plate 16 is also applied to the edge of the head and in this plate is formed a slot 17 which communicates with a recess 18 formed in the head beneath the cover plate. This recess 18 has extending up at its lower end a lug 19 and the recess is provided at its upper end with a shoulder 20. Leading from the recess at the upper end thereof is a slot 21.

Adjacent the blade 11 the head is provided with a recess 22 wherein is received the hinge 23 of a bevel blade 24, the hinge revolving about a pintle 25. Extending from the blade 24 is an are 26 and this are 26 extends through the slot 17 and recess 18 and is movable into and out of the slot 21. This are is furthermore provided at its inner end with an upstanding lug 27 arranged to engage the shoulder 20 when the blade 24 is at one limit of its movement. Between the lug 20 and the plate 16 is positioned the downwardly extending portion 28 of a lever 29, the lever being pivoted on a suitable pin 30 having its ends received respectively in said lug and plate. The lever 29 extends over the are 26 and is provided with a finger 31 adapted to engage in one of a series of holes 32 formed in the are 26, said holes being so positioned that when the finger is engaged in one or the other of the holes the blade 24 will lie at a desired angle to the blade 11, as for instance at such angle as to lay off a miter or octagon. In the lever 29 is formed a recess 33 and in the head 10 is a similar recess 34, a spring 35 fitting in these recesses and engaging the finger 31 against the are 26 or into one of the holes 32. The end of the lever 29 is provided with a thumb piece 36 which projects through an opening 37 formed in the cover plate 15.

In using the device when the blade 24 lies against the head a right angle may be laid 01f but, when it is desired to lay a different angle the thumb piece 36 is pressed upon to move the finger 31 out of the hole wherein it lies. The blade 24 may then be rotated to the desired angle and the thumb piece released whereupon the spring 35 will cause the finger 31 to enter a hole 32 and lock the blade in adjusted position.

There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and of the character specified.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

In a square of the class described, a head having a recess therein provided with a shouldered portion and with a slot leading from the recess, a cover plate for said recess provided With an opening, a lever pivoted in the recess and having a thumb piece extending through the opening, a blade piv- 5 oted to said head, an are carried by said blade and provided With a series of spaced openings, a finger on said lever adapted to enter a selected opening in the are to lock the blade in adjusted position, a lug on said 10 are engageable With the shouldered portion of the recess to limit the movement of the arc, a spring urging said linger into the openings in said are, and a second blade fixedly attached to said head.
