To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHERMAN R. COLLING- woop, a citizen of the United States, and resident of llichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolling Radiator Shutters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
hIy invention relates to that class of a tachments for automobile-radiators. in which a flexible curtain is arranged to be rolled upon a spring-actuated roller, and to cover all or any part of the anterior surface of the radiator, for prevention of over-cooling of the motor in cold weather; also, to prevent freezing of the radiator water where no anti-freeze mixture is employed.
My invention provides means whereby the shutter or curtain is adjustable to any de sired position from the front seat of the car. by pulling or paying out a chain.
The preferred construction of the device is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation, the top of the engine-hood being broken away; Fig. 2 is a front elevation; Fig. 3 shows the front pulley; Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the spring-roller, and its housing in section; Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the rollerspring and a portion of the curtain; Fig. 6 is a detail section of the chain-fastening dcvice: Fig. 7 is a detail section taken on line VIL-Vll on Fig. 6; and 8 is a rear view of the adjusting means as seen from the front seat of the car.
On Fig. 4, a housing 1 is shown as secured to a horizontal apron 2 of a motor car, at the bottom of the radiator 3. In one end of said housing is a bearing-lug a, having an angular slot 5 therein, to receive the squared end 7 of a spindle 7, inserted in the hollow end of the roller 6, which has a gudgeon (not shown) on its other end. rotatable in a bear ing, not shown. A helical spring 8 has one end secured. to the spindle at 9, and the opposite end is secured to the roller 6. as for example by insertion through a perforation in the roller as at 10.
To shed water, snow or dust, the upper lip of the housing nearly touches the radiator. The curtain 12 is fastened to roller 6 and passes up between said lip and the radiator, being long enough to cover the radiator front when fully extended. A cable 14 is connected to the curtain at 15 (Fig. 2) and passes over a small grooved pulley 16, being connected at c with a chain 14, which is passed through a hole 18 in the dash 19.
The front pulley, 16, has a yoke 20 secured to the front of the radiator in any preferred manner. The second roller, 17, has
its yoke in the form of a clip 21, which is V mounted on the radiator-tie-rod 22 and held either by friction or by a set-screw.
The opening 18 through the dash 19 is provided with a metal plate 23, having an opening in register with that in the dash. This plate has an integral upstanding lug 2%, small enough to enter freely the opening of any link in the chain 14. To adjust the curtain or shutter, either up or down, the operator disengages the chain from lug 2i and either pulls or pays it out, the spring causing the motion in the latter case, and the chain slipping easily through the apertures. When the curtain is at the desired height the chain is hooked over the lug, which holds it in place against the tension of the roller spring.
The details here shown may be modified without sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The combination, with the radiator, tie-rod and dash of a motor-car, of a vertically slidable rolling shutter positioned closely in front of the radiator, a spring-actuated roller attached to said shutter, a cable attached to the top of said shutter, a chain connected to said cable, a forward guidepulley having a shank inserted in the front of the radiator near the top of the same, a rear guide-pulley having a clip mounted on said tie-rod and means for adjusting the chain on the dash.
