Description
L. HULL.
Extension Chandeliers.
Patented August 26', 1873.
iverw Hm;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
g LIVERUS HULL, OF OHARLESTOWN, ASSIGNOR TO TUCKER MANUFACTUR- ING COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT l-N EXTENSION CHANDELIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,107, dated August 26, 1873; application filed May 16, 1873.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, LIVERUS HULL, of Oharlestown, of the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extension Ghandeliers or Gasaliers; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanyin g drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, Fig. 2 a side view, and Fig. 3 a vertical section, of my improved extension mechanism.
The nature of my invention may be said to consist as follows, viz: In an elevator and spring combined, and arranged with a leverbrake and the head or upper part of a slidetube when said tube is applied to a rod and supported by springs, all substantially as and for the purpose and to operate as hereinafter explained; also, in a check or lever brake, a spring and an elevator arranged and combined together, and with the said rod a slide-tube and springs, all being as and for the purpose and to operate as hereinafter explained.
In the drawings, A denotes the stationary guide-rod, extending down from the hanger B. G is the tube, which receives and slides upon the said rod A, and at its lower end supports the burner carrier or chandelier; The said tube is provided with a cross head or bar, D, which, at or near its ends, is connected with the ban ger by counterbalancinghelical springs E E. Fixed to the upper part of the tube 0 is a tubular and furcated head, F, between whose prongs a a a lever-brake, G, is arranged, it being also pivoted to the said prongs. The rod A extends through the lever-brake in man- 11 er as represented. A helical spring, H, fixed to the brake, and an ear, 11, extending from the head F serves to draw downward the leverbrake so as to cause it to gripe or bind upon the rod. There is applied to the lever-brake an elevator or stifi rod, I, which is extended down from it and loosely through a guide-arm, K, projecting from the cross-bar D, there being a knob, c, on the lower end of the said elevator. By applying the hand to the knob and press in g it upward the force of the lever-brake spring may be overcome, and such brake be moved so as to relieve from its gripe the rod A in order to permit the tube 0 to be slid either upward or downward upon the sliderod. In order to prevent the lever-brake while being elevated from going too high, so as to operate to stop or hinder the movement of the tube 0, there is fixed to the head F a check, L, which is a rod going through a slot, 0, in the leverbrake, and provided with a head, f, all being as and arranged as shown.
In my said mechanism the brake-spring is not connected with my pull or cord, but is fastened to the head F, and is in constant tension, the brake being relieved of such only by upward pressure exerted on and by the elevator.
What I claim as my invention may be stated as follows:
1. The elevatorIand spring H combined and arranged with the lever-brake G and head F or upper part of the slide-tube C, said tube being applied to the rod A and supported by springs E, substantially as represented.
2. The check L, lever-brake G, spring H, and the elevator I, arranged and combined together and with the rod A, the slide-tube G,
and the springs E, all substantially as and to operate as explained.
Witnesses: LIVERUS HULL.
