Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 2?, 1922.
Application filed February 24, 1921. Serial No. 447,468.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Crninnns HERBERT RoDwnLL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at l i Railway Approach, London Bridge, in the county of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Golf Clubs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to golf clubs of the kind known as putters, the object of the invention being to guide the eye of the player or focus his attention on the line of the putting stroke.
According to this invention the operative head of the putter is provided on its upper surface and in the centre of its operative side with a semi-circular raised portion, the diameter of which is formed by a straight edge on the face of the head, and in the position which corresponds with the centre of the semi-circle is a tapered notch directed at right angles to such straight edge. From the face of the hack of the edge the wood or metal of which the head is made is tapered or curved away in such man. er to give the effect of receding from TlQW. The face is slightly lofted and the side of the shank adjacent to such face is flattened so that the shank is approximately Y shaped in cross section.
A. club more correctly balanced than those hitherto in use for this special purpose, namely, as a putter, is obtained by the dis tribution of weight arising from the formation of the raised semi-disk, the receding back, and the flattened shank.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of the head of a putter embodying this invention.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a face view.
Figure 4 is a sectional plan taken on the line l-i in Figure 2.
A indicates the putter head having on its upper surface a semi-circular raised portion B in which is a tapered notch C. The operative face of the putter head is loftct a. shown at D, and the shank E has a somewhat flattened side at F above this face.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:-
1. In a golf club of the kind known as a putter, a head having an approximately fiat striking face and a shank extending up wardly from one end of said striking face, said head bein provided on its upper surface with a semicircular raised projection, the diameter of which projection is formed by the upper straight edge of said striking face, and a depression centrally located in relation to the arc of said projection extending from said projection into said face.
2. In a golf club of the kind known as a putter, a head having an approximately flat striking face, and a shank extending upwardly from one end of said striking face, said head being provided on its upper surface with a semicircular raised projection, the diameter of which projection is formed by the upper straight edge of said striking face, and a depression centrally located in relation to the arc of said projection extending from said projection into said face, the upper surface of the head outside said'projection being curved away in.such manner as to give the effect of receding from view.
3. In a golf club of the kind known as a putter, a head having an approximately fiat and slightly lofted striking face, and a shank extending upwardly from one end of said striking face, the side of said shank adjacent said face being flattened, said head being provided on its upper surface with a semicircular raised projection, the diameter of which projection is formed by the upper straight edge of said striking face, and a de pression centrally located in relation to the are of said projection extending from said projection into said face.
In a golf club of the kind known as a putter, a head having an approximately flat and slightly lofted striking face and a shank extending upwardly from one end of said striking face, the side of said shank adjacent said face being flattened, said head being provided on its upper surface ith a semicircular raised projection, the diameter of which projection is f rmed by the upper straight edge of said striking face. and a tapered notch centrally located in relation to the arc of said projection and extending from said projection into said face, the upper surface of the head outside said projection being curved away in such manner as to give the effect of receding from View.
