T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HOWARD T. INGI-IRAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holding Implements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in holding devices of the typedisclosed in my Patent No. 1,256,565 issued February 19, 1918', and it is an object of this invention to provide an improved means for rigidly holding, at any angle with respect to the handle, such household articles as brooms, floor brushes, wall clusters and brushes, scrubbing brushes, window washing brushes and driers, dust cloths for ceilings, walls and woodwork, floor and oil mops, etc.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a 1 device of the character described, which is extremely simple in construction, each of the gripping members be ing designed in such manner that they may be cast integral, thus insuring a rigid and perfect section, the various parts of the device being reinforced in such manner as to insure long hard service.
Another object of this invention isto provide an eflicient and simple means of the class described, which may be cast from such light metals as aluminum, thus insuring light weight and neatness of appearance.

Figure 15 is an elevation of the bar which is attached to brush backs and the like by which the same may beengaged or gripped by the device constituting the present invention. p A 1 Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, it will be observed that the present invention consists of three principal parts, the parts A and B 'which mate, and the part C which a'djustably and hingedly connected with the parts A and B and is itself adapted to be secured in the handle of the implement.
When the implement is to be used in connection with brushesor other stiif backed articles of that nature, a fourth part D is employed, which is secured to the, back of the brush and forms a member that may be gripped by the jaws A andB of the implement. i v
It will be noticed especially by reference to FiguresS, 9 and 10 that the part A is provided with two rearwardly extending sides 1-1 that are adaptedto fit astride the corresponding sides 11 of the part B (see Figures 4 5 and 6), the sides 1 being pro vided with holes 7 and 8 through which passes the thumb screw 32 (see Figure 1) which causes the members 1 and 11 to be ri'gidlv, though adjustably, secured to the part It will also be noticed that the sides 1-1 extend through and under the bodyof the part A, as at 1, serving as guides for the sides 11-11 of the part 13, thus maintaining the two jaws in exact relation to one another, when in operation.
Reinforcing means 2 and 1.8, respectively, are provided for the backs of the parts A and I) and, when assembled and closed together, these members compact, thus adding to the appearance of the device.
The lower edge of the rib 1 of part A and the corresponding edge 4* of part B are disposed to extend under the flanges 24 of the brush attachment D, when in operative position, the edges of the flanges 2a being gripped within that space 3 and 13, the purposes of which is obvious.
It will also be noticed that reinforcing parts 5 are provided on either side of the member A and corresponding reinforcing parts 17 are provided on either side of the member l), thus preventing excessive wear at these points.
Those portions 11 of the part B are provided on the inside with a series of ratchets 16 which are disposed to engage the corresponding indentations 20 of the element or part C.
By this combination, the holder consisting of ti e elements A and B may be adjusted at any angle with respect to the handle and is maintained rigidly in position by means of the thumb screw 32.
The element C by which the jaws are mounted on the handle in an adjustable manner is best shown in Figures 11 and 12 of the drawings, by reference to which it will be, observed that it is provided with a shoulder 22 disposed to contact the end of the handle and after being driven in place, is firmly united with the handle 36 by the ferrule 33 and a small rivet 34.
The shank 23 of the element C is of rec tangular construction in order that it may be driven into a small hole without injury to the handle.
The attachment D is provided with ears 28 having holes 29 through which screws 29 pass into the back of the article to be used. These ears, as will be noticed, are wide in construction, thus making the connection to the article to be used very rigid.
The sections 2& are the only parts gripped by the holder.
It will be noticed that upon loosening the thumb screw 35, the spring 10 will cause the jaws A and B to separate, thus releasing the article being used.
The spring 10 is preferably of the flat type and is placed between the sides 11 of element B and besides l of element A, the rear portion of the spring being closed to the thumb screw 35, as best shown in are 2.

it will be seen that in order to secure or release the brush or other article being held by the jaws A and B, it is not necessary to change the angularity of the holder with relation to the handle.
As both members A and B are pivoted on the same bolt 32 and as the member A has its sides 1-1 smooth, it is quite convenient to release the article from the jaws A and B by simply loosening the thumb screw 35, the spring 10 then functioning to separate the jaws to allow for the removal or insertion of the article.
The handle may be adjusted to any angle, as indicated by the arrows in Figure 1, by simply loosening the thumb screw 32 su'fiiciently to enable the ratchet 16 to be changed in their location in the indentations 20.
Such articles as dust cloths, or mops, etc., (see Figure 3) may be folded up and placed between the open aws and, when tightened, will be just as permanent as the brush 30 which is provided with the part D.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the complete construction, operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
What I claim is:
1. In an implement of the class described,
a pair of coacting jaw members, each including parallel side plates and laterally extended portions having a gripping flange, a handle connecting member adapted for connection to a handle, a single means hingedly connecting said jaw member side plates to said handle connecting member and including means for interlocking one of said jaw members with said handle connecting member and for pivotally connecting the other of said jaw members with the first aw member and handle connecting member, a spring carried by said jaw members for separating them and a thumb screw connecting said jaw members for forcing them together against the action of said spring.
2. in an implement of the class described two jaw members, each having upstandin side plates for connection to a handle, a
handle connecting member with which said side plates cooperate, the side plates of one of said jaw members and said handle connecting member having interlocking elements, a thumb screw connecting the side plates of said jaw members to said handle connecting member and to each other, with the side plates of one of said jaws hingedly mounted on said thumb screw for motion without disturbing the interlocked connection between the other of said plates and said handle connecting member. a spring tending to separate said jaws and means for drawing said. jaws together against the action of said spring.
3. In an implement of the class described, a pair of jaw members each in one piece and each comprising vertical parallel side plates, those of one jaw fitting within those of the other jaw and adapted to be pivotally connected together at their upper ends, opposed gripping elements at the lower 'ends oi said jaw plates, a handle connecting element comprising a fiat apertured head and a shank, said head adapted to fit between the side plates of said jaws, means pivotally connecting said side plates together to said head and including elements for adjustably and rigidly connecting said head and the adjacent side plates of one aw together, the side plates of the other jaw being free for motion on the pivotal axis, and means for separating and closing said jaws respectively to release and grip the articles to be held.
4. In an implement of the class described, a pair of aw members each in one piece and each comprising vertical parallel side plates, those of one aw fitting within those of the other jaw and adapted to be pivotally connected together at their upper ends, laterally extending gripping elements at the lower ends of said aw plates, a handle connecting element comprising a flat apertured head and a shank, said head adapted to fit between the side plates of said jaws, means pivotally connecting said side plates together to said head and including elements for adjustably and rigidly connecting said head and the adjacent side plates of one jaw together, the side plates of the other jaw be ing free for motion on the pivotal axis, means for separating and closing said jaws respectively to release and grip the articles to be held, the said laterally extending grip-- ping element of one jaw matching that of the opposite jaw and said separating means comprising a flat loo spring held between said jaws below the c osing means.
5. In an implement of the class described, a handle connecting member consisting of a flat apertured head and a shank, a thumb screw passing through the aperture of said head, a pair of jaw members each including a pair of side plates connected together by a web, the upper ends of said side plates being apertured to form ears to receive said thumb screw for pivotally connecting said jaws to said head, means on said head and said side plates cooperating with said thumb screw for rigidly and adjustably holding one of said aws to said head while permitting the other jaw to swing on the pivotal axis toward and from the rigid jaw, a spring held between said side plates of the oppos ing aw, a thumb screw passing through the webs of said jaws between said side plates for drawing them together against the tension of the spring, the lower ends of said jaws including laterally. extended web portions terminating at the bottom in inturned gripping flanges, and inturned matching flanges, the latter being recessed adjacent to the gripping flanges and enlarged to form reinforcements at the ends, substantially as shown and described.

In an implement of the class described, a handle connecting member consisting of a fiat apertured head and a shank, a thumb screw passing through the aperture of said head, a pair of jaw members each including a pair of side plates. connected together by a web, the upper ends of said side plates be ing apertured to form ears to receive said thumb screw for pivotally connecting said web portions terminating at the bottom in inturned gripping flanges, and inturned matching flanges, the latter being recessed adjacent to the gripping flanges and enlarged to form reinforcements at the ends, and an attachment having T-heads at the ends of the same to be engaged by said jaws at the reinforced ends of the lateral extensions, said attachment adapted to be secured to an article to be sustained.
