TROLLEY-POLE ADJUSTER.
inattesa.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 27, 1922 i 'Application led'eptenibei 29, 1919. Serial No. 327,132.
T 0 @ZZ whom t may con cera f Be it known that I, sMUs Pn'rnnsnN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State ofMissouri, have invented certain new and novel Improvements in rlrolley-Pole Adjusters, of which the following isa speciication.
My invention relates to trolley-polead j listers, and has for its object to provide a deviceadapted to bc applied to a: trolleypole adjacent the trolley wheel and `so 'constructed that a movable member thereofniay be actuated by pullingon the trolley-rope for quickly replacing the trolley-wheel in contact with the trolley-wire after it has left the trolley-wire.
YVith the above and other objec'tsin view, the invention consists in the novel construetion, arrangementA andcombination of parts, hereinafter described and finally pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like characters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views: v
Fig. 1, is a side elevation of a'trolley-pole` equipped with my improvement. the same being shown in its normal position in full lines, and in its uppermost adjusted .posi-y tion in dotted lines.
Fig. 2, is a detail of the forward extension end of the movable guide member.
F ig. 3, is a top plan view of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the reference character 1 designates a trolley-pole. 2, a socket member fixed to the trolleypole having a bifurcated end 3. 4, a trolley-wheel rotatably mounted in the bifurcated end 3 of the socket member 2. 5, is the usual trolley-rope fixed to the socket member' 2 for actuating the trolley-pole 1, and 6 indicates the trolley-wire.
In carrying out the aim o1 my present :invention, I employ a pair of suitable clampmeinbers 7 and 8, which are securely held in a clamped position upon the socket-member 2 by means of the fastening devices 9. Each clamp- member 7 and 8 is provided with a stop, or lip 10 adapted to engage the shoulder 11 of the socket-member2 to prevent any possible change of the clamp- members 7 and 8 from slipping down the socket-member,`
should the fastening devices 9 loosen a little Jfrom any cause.
A relatively long movable guidemember 12 having an opening 13 is pivotally connected to the ears 14 of the clampfniember 8,
by means of the pin 15. Therear end of the.
guide member 12 is provided with a pair of outwardly diverging guide arms 16.
The forward end oit-the guidemember 12 is provided with an `extension member 17 Yhaving an opening 18 and the forward extremity-19 'ot' the extension member 17 is provided with a rope opening- 20. The extension 17 is arranged at a suitable angle to the longitudinal axis olf the guide member 12, while a rope opening20is alsoarrangedr at a suitable angle to the longitudinal axis ofthe extension member 17 The` trolley-rope 5, ixed tothe socket f member 2, first passesthrough the opening. 18, of the extension member 17 and through Y to the upper movement of .the trolley wheel,
come into contact with one of the spreadingY guiding arms 16, thus preventing the trolley wheel from rising to a higher elevation. Now, all that is necessary for the conductor to do to replace tlietrolley-wire 6 upon the trolley-wheel 4, is to pull rearwardly upon the trolley rope 5, which will cause the trolley-pole to stand still while at the saine time the pulling movement on the rope rwill bring the extension member 17 to the substantially vertical position shown in Fig. 1 and thereby in turn raise the guide-member 12 and diverging guide-arms 16 to the upwardly and rearwardly inclined position shown in Fig.
1. The upper movement of the guide arms 16 will cause the trolley-wire 4 to be raised at the saine time, and the guide arms 16, in
being raised, willv gradually crowd the trolley-wire 4 to the center of the guide-arms so that by the timel the arms have been fully raised the trolley will be in alinement with the groove of the trolley wheel. Now, as thetrolley rope 5 is slackened after the trolley-wire 4 has been raised by the guide arms 16, the trolley-pole, when released will rise and the trolleywire will ride in the groove of the trolley-wheel, as is manifest.
From the foregoing, it is evident that when the trolley wheel 4 jumps out of engagement with the trolley-wire 6, that to replace the trolley-wire upon the trolley wheel, the operator merely pulls rear-wardl y on the trolley-rope 5 which causes the guide arms 16 to raise the trolley wire and bringit into a center line with the groove of the trollej,'-wl1eel where it will seat itself again after the trolley-pole has been permitted. to raise by letting loose of the trolley-pole 5.
lt will be observed that the arms of the bifurcated end Bof the trolley-polewill act as a stop for the members vl2 to engage when the device is actuated so as to limit the upward movement of the members This is clearly shown in dotted lines in fligr. 1. When the arms ylEZare in the position shown in dotted lines .in Fig. l, observed that part of the trolley-wheel -l passes through the opening 13.
The many advantages of the herein described invention will readily suggest themselves to those skilled inthe art to which it appertains.
I do not desire to be understoodas limiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifestthat variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and .arrangement in the adaptation of the device to `various condi'- tions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims, hence l. wish it to be understood that l Areserve the right to make any such changes Sor modifications as may fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims when fairly construed.
What l claim is:
llln means for replacing a trolley-wire upon ya. trolley-wheel7 an angular movable it will be` member pivotally connected to a trolley-pole and having an opening to receive the trolley-l avith trolle -wire for re )lacino' the ltrollevwire upon the trolley-wheel,
2, ln combination with atrolley-poleand trolley-wheel, a guide-member pivotally connected tothe trolley-pole, said guide member having' a pair of rearwardly and downwardly extending spaced arms to form an opening' for the trolley-wheel to enter when elevated, forked arms extending` ,from 'the free ends of said spaced arms, said guide member *having a pair of forwardly extending diverging arms forming` a rope loop and terminating downwadly and forwardly to form a second loop through which loops a trolley-rope is adapted to pass for connection with the trolley-pole so that when the rope is pull-ed rearwardly it will slip in the rope loops and at the same time lower the forward end of the guide member and raise the rear end thereof to an elevated position for replacing a trolley-wire upon the trolleywheel. i
ln testimony whereof7 l .have 'hereunto signed my name to the s ieciiication.
