Description

O. J. GROEHN.
-[ORCH BURNER.
APPLICATION HLED FEB. 14. 1921.
I Patented June 27, 1922.
, o'rro J. GROEHN, or nn'rno'i'r, MICHIGAN, AssIonon T0 CLAYTON & LAMBERT ANU FACTURING COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF M ICHIGANJ Ton-on BURNER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro J. GROEHN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at'Detroit, inthe county of WVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Torch Burners, of which the following is, a specification, reference being had therein to the ac companying drawings This invention relates to torch burners and refers more'particularly to a new and improved construction of blow torch. In blow torches such as used by plumbers, metal workers and the like diflioulty is encountered in starting and preventing the blowing out or interruption of the flame particularly in the larger-sizes of torches. Owing to the large amount of surface to be initially heated it often takes considerable time to start the torch and one of the objects of the present invention is to provide .a torch which can be quickly and easily started; to-provide a torch or burner therefor which can be cheaply constructed and in which the fuel is vaporized at a point near the discharge orifice thus preventing the condensing of the vaporized fuel; to provide a construction wherein a relatively small drip cup can be employed for starting and to so construct and arrange the parts that a smaller blow torch which can be easily started is employed for preheating or vaporizing the fuel to be burned in the main or larger nozzle. The invention also resides in the novel arrangement of the vaporizing coil and in such further features of construction and arrangements and combinations of parts and operations as will more fully hereinafter appear.
In the drawings: v T
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through a torch burner embodying my invention; and
Figure 2 is a crosssection on the line-2-2 I of Figure 1. a 1
Describing in detail the particular embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, A designates a torch burner having a shell B which is provided at its forward end with an enlarged. burner chamber B. The latter may or may not be provided with an additional extension 13 thus permitting the various sections of the combustion chamber to be economically manufac- I Specificationof LettersiPatent. lfatnted Jul le 27, 1 922. Application filed February 14, 1921. Se1'ia 1 1 To.;I 4 4,72 7.
tured andassemb'ledi I Near its forward end the casing B is'provided with a coil C which at its'forward end terminates in a nozzle ing C islocatedj v Atits rear portion the casing B is pro-- titled with a supplemental torch burner D which is preferably-a complete smaller blow V torch having the combustion chamber D, the control valve D ,the' preheating valve or passageway D connecting through the 1101- low stem D to the main fuel supply pipe E;
The latter is controlled-bya main valve E. and the supplemental torch burner D preferably has the usual drip c'up F. Be-
tweenthe plane hollow stem D and that of the upright portion of the coil U there is preferably located a second control valve G which governsthe communication between the main fuel supply pipe Eand the cOil G; The casing B is preferably carried by up:
rights l-l and T1 mounted bysuitable fit? tings on the main fuel supply pipe E; Thus when the torchis assembled they form a complete unit, the operation of which is as follows: In place of attempting to heat and vaporizethe large quantity of fuel necessary 7 for the main burner C it is only necessary to vaporize the amount of fuel employedfor' the supplemental burner nozzle J of the sup:
plemental torch burner D; This can be done by a small amount of liquid fuel in the drip cup F so as to initially heat thep-arts. The a 1 main supply valve E being opened the'liquid fuel under pressure will pass up through the stem D preheatingthe passageway D and being burned at the supplemental orifice J the needle valve D being adJusted to govflame being projected to the outward end of the combustion chamber D whichis in substantially axial alignment with the coil 0. Thus an extremely hot flame is thrown not only on the coil C but also on the rear portion of the main discharge nozzle C".
' As soon as theseparts are heated to the proper temperature the valve G is opened allowing'the fuel to be vaporized in the cup coil G. Then without having any chance to cool and condense it is passed to the hot main nozzle (Pout of which it is forced under pressure and burned within the main combustion chamber D. This novel constructi'on not only permits of the easy starting of the torch burner but it insures the burner continuing in operation as the degree f heating on the vaporizing coil can at all times be controlled by the adjustments of the valve D While I have shown and described the use of a smaller blow torch for use in heating the coil in certain aspects of the invention this feature is important but the invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the use of such a burner for preheating the coil nor to other features of construction and combinationsof parts except as ultimately set forth in the claims.
What I claim as my invention is '1. In a burner for torches or the like, the combination with a casing a combustion chamber located. at oneend of said casing, a main fuel nozzle in said combustion chamber, a coil for supplying fuel to said nozzle located in the rear of said nozzle and a supplemental burner for heating said coil and means dependent of said coil for supplying a fuel to said main fuel nozzle;
2. In a burner for torches orthe like, the combmation with a caslng a combustion chamber located at one end of said casing, a mainrfuel nozzle in said combustion chamber, a coil'for supplying: fuel to said nozzle located in the rear of said nozzle and a supplemental burner for heating said coil,
said supplemental burner having its combustion chamber substantially in axial alignment with said coil.
3. In a burner for torches or thelike, the combination with a casing, of a main burner nozzle located in the casing, valve controlled means for supplying a fuel to said nozzle,
a vaporizing chamber located in the casing,
a supplemental nozzle in the rear of the first 7 supplying a fuel to said coil, a supplemental nozzle in rear of the first named nozzle. for heating said coil, and independent valve controlled means for supplying a fuel to the last mentioned nozzle.
V 5'. In a burner for torches or the like, the
combination withacasing, of a main burner nozzle located in said casing, valve controlled means for supplying a fuel to said nozzle, a vaporizing chamber also located intthe casing, a supplemental nozzle in the'rear of said vaporizing chamber, and means for supplying a fuel to the supplemental nozzle, said supply means being spaced from and independent of the supply means aforesaid.
In testimony whereof I-afiix my signature.
