Description
J. A. CAMPBELL.
STAMPING DEVICE.
APPLICATION man APR. 8. 1921.
1,420,686. Patented June 27,1922.
A TTORNEYS which may be readily applied to the -to be marked, and
UNITED STATES PATENT onc JOHN ALPHEUS CAMPBELL, 0F CARBONDALE, ILLINOIS.
STAMPING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, JOHN A. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Carbondale, in the county ofJackson and State of Illinois, have mvented a new and Im roved Stamping Device, of which the fol owin is a description.
My invention re ates to a stamping device which while having wider use is 'more particularly designed for marking an automobile in various places such as on the fender, hood, apron, body, cowl, bows, and other different parts by stamping on the parts identifying letters, symbols, or other marks, such for example as the initials of the owner and the abbreviation of the State in which the automobile is licensed, the
purpose being to make difficult the OblltBIfition of the marks by thieves.
The general object of'the invention is to provide a tool for the indicated purpose art operated with facility to impress the mark.
The distinctive features of the (invention and its advantages will clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stamping device embodying my invention, portions of the handle-being broken away;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2 2, Fi re 1;
igure 3 is -a perspective view of the stamp, section;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the stamping blocks.
In carrying out my .invention in accordance with the illustrated example, the head 10 is rovided having a handle 11. Adjustabl d lon itudinally in the head If) is a shank 12, t e front end of which is deflected .laterally as at 13 and terminates in an anvil element 14 constituting one member of the clamp, the head 10 as hereinafter described, forming a coacting clamp member. The rear end tends beyond the head 10 and is threaded ."to receive'a nut 15 'for adjusting'the anvil Specification of Letters Patent.
' of the head 10. On the head base .of which stamp 16 forward y.
shown partly broken away and in,
of'the shank excal embodiment of clamping element 14- relatively to the front rearwardly in the head and having a spring 18 coiled about the same, the spring being'held at its rear end by a ca on' the end or shank, means for the spring.
- F or reciprocating the stamp 17 toward the anvil member 14, an operating device 20, constituting a lever, is provided and pivoted near its frofit end as at 21 to the head Patented June 27, 1922. Application filed April 8,1921. Serial No. 459,589.
10 at the front is a stamp deslgnated generally by the numeral 16, the
has a shank 17, extending 19 screwed or equiva ent holding,
10, the front transversely bevelled surface 22 of said handle 20 being adapted by the rocking of the handle to bear against the shank 18 at its ca 19 to thereby move the With the described arrangement the device is applied to the part of the automobile to be stamped by entering said part between the anvil 14 and the stamp 16 and by adjusting the nut 15 the head 10 with t e stamp 16 and the anvil 14 serve to clamp the tool to the material sufliciently tight to position the. tool, after which the handle 20 is rocked to cause its front edge 20 to engage the shank of the stamp and force the stain forwardly impressing its marks or symbdls in the materlal of the automobile part.
- The after a forward movement by the handle 20. In order that the symbols or marks of the stamps may be changed a holder block 23 is provided, the back of which has a dove-tail rib 23 slidable in a corresponding groove 16 in the base of the stamp. The front of the holder block 23 is recessed to receive a series of individual stampin blocks or type blocks 24 which are locke in lace by a rod 25 extending longitudinal yof the block 23 and engaging partly in a concave groove 26 in said block and partly in concave grooves 27 in the stamping blocks 24. On the one end of the rod 25 is a clamp. head 28 returned laterally inward to overlap the adjacent face of the holder block 23, the returned end being resilient to give clamping action.
I would state in conclusion that' whilethe illustrated example constitutes a practi-' my invention, I do not spring 18 serves to restore the stamp limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied Without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A device of the class described, including a head having a handle, a stamp having a shank adapted to be reciprocated in said head, an anvil element adjustable on said head and extending laterally in front of the head, a lever pivoted for movement toward or from said handle and formed with a transversely bevelled front end adapted to engage said shank and move the shank toward the anvil element, and a spring on said shank for restoring the stamp after movement toward the anvil element.
2. In a device of the class described, a stamp including a holder having a recess, separate stamp blocks accommodated in said recess, and a locking rod slidable in the holder and engaging said stamping blocks to retain the same in position, said rod havin a returned end approximately parallel with the axis of the rod and adapted to bear against the face of the holder.
JOHN ALPHEUS CAMPBELL.
