lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved burglar alarm and one object of the invention is to provide a burglar alarm so constructed that an electro-magnet may be energized when it is attemptedto open a door, the magnet when energized releasing a spring controlled switch element to close the circuit of an electric bell thus permitting the bell to ring.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this burglar alarm that the elecric .bell will continue to ring until the spring controlled switch is manually re turned to an inoperative position.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this burglar alarm that the mag net energizing circuit may be in circuit with the battery for the bell ringing circuit.
v Another object of the invention is to provide an improved type of contact element for the electro-magnet energizing circuit and an improved actuating device for closing this contact, the contact being mounted upon the door jamb and the actuating element upon the door. 1 v
' Another object of the invention is to so construct this contact and actuating element that the actuating element may be. rendered inoperative in case it desired to open the door from the inside thus permitting the door to be opened from within the house without the alarm being sounded.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:

This burglar alarm is provided with a signal or electric bell 10 which is mounted upon a supporting board 11 and may be located at the most desirable point in a residence. The board 11, in addition to the bell, carries contact posts 12, 13, 1 1 and 15 and the bell 1s provided with the usual posts 16 and 17. An electro-magnet 18 is carried by supporting brackets 19 and 20 and has one post nected with the post 15 from which extends awire connected with the bell post 17. The terminal post 12 is connected with the terminal post 15 and is in circuit with the battery or other source of current 21 throu h the medium of the wire 22, the second wire 23 being connected with the terminal post 14. , Wires 24 and 25 lead from the terminal posts 13 and 14: and are connected with the contacts 26 and 27 to be hereinafter more fully described, a switch 28 being provided so that the circuit through the magnet may be rendered inoperative when desired.
From the above description it will be readily seen that when the contacts 26 and 27 are in engagement and the switch 28 .closed, a circuit will be established through the electro-magnet thus energizing the mag net and causing the armature pin 29 thereof to be drawn inwardly.
The armature pin 29. of this magnet 18 carries a head 30 which limits inward movement of the pin and which is engaged. by the spring 31 serving to normally retain the pin in an extended position. The core 32 of this magnet extends beyond the lower end thereof as a tube 32 and journals a sleeve 33 having at one end a disk 34: and at the opposite end a spring housing 35 in which is positioned a spring 36. The armature pin 29 is slidably mounted in a longitudinally extending opening formed in the core32 and is provided with a finger 37 which extends through a side slot 87 in the tube 32 and is adapted to fit into a notch 38 formed in the lower end portion of the sleeve 33 and holding the sleeve against rotarv movement when seated in the notch.
WVlien the magnet is energized, and the armature pin is drawn inwardly against the tension. of the spring 31, the finger will move out of the notch thus releasing and permitting this sleeve to rotate under urgency of the spring 36. A spring winding disk 39 closes the spring housing and carries p'v is 4:0 which engage the free end of the spring 86. The disk will be put in place and after being turned to tighten the spring will be secured by a screw 40'. hen the armature pin moves to the inoperative position, the spring will rotate the sleeve and the contact arm 4-1 carried thereby will engage the contact 42 carried by the bracket 20. This bracket 20 further carries a terminal screw 43 which is connected with the terminal screw 16. A. terminal screw 4A is carried by the base board 11 and is connected with the terminal screw 14- by wire and with the disk 39 by the short wire d6. It will thus be seen that when the magnet is energized and the sleeve released and turned by spring 36 to bring the contacts 41 and 4-2 into engagement a circuit will be established through the bell thus causing the bell to ring until the sleeve is returned to the normal position through the medium of the handle 4.7. When returned to the normal position, the spring 31 moves the pin 29 to bring the finger thereof into the notch of the sleeve to hold the sleeve in the set position.
The contact arms 26 and 2'? are connected with the insulating base 48 which. will pretterably be "formed of fibre. The contact arms will be formed of metal having sufiicient resiliency to permit the arm 27 to be swung into engagement with the arm 26, the end portion 26 of which extents across the thickened end portion of the arm 27. This thickened end portion of the arm 27 has a beveled end which extends beyond the base 48 and is adapted to pass through the cutout 4.9 of the plate 50 secured. to the door 51. This plate 50 carries a plui'iger M which. has a pin 52 slidably mounted in the opening of the lug 53, a spring 5-11; being providedv to normally retain the rdui'iger in an extended position and a strap or bracket 55 liieing provided to guide the sliding movement of the plunger. The end o't' this plunger is beveled. or under-cut as shown so that when the door is closed the plunger may ride past the contact 27. In order to permit the door to be closed and opened without the alarm being given, the plunger may be retained in a retracted position by any suitable means or the contact 26 or 27 may be swung to an inoperative position.

This will draw the armature pin inwardly and move the linger 3? out of the notch in the sleeve thereby releasing the sleeve and permitting the spring 36 to swing the sleeve to bring the contacts L1 and :229 into engagement. This closes the circuit hrough the bell. and the bell. will ring until the sleeve is returned to the original position. The spring 3i will then move the pin 20 to bring the linger thereoil again into the notch of the sleeve thus retaining the sleeve in the desired position. it will thus be seen that there has been. :rovided an alarm in which the movement of? a deer toward an open position will cause the bell to ring and that this bell will continue to ring until manually shut oil. 'llheretore, there is no danger ot the bel being rung for a very snort length or time and 'lailing to wake the occupant of the house in which. the alarm is installed. Tt will be iiurther noted that this is a very simple system which. can be easily installed and which does not require the services oi? an experienced electrician in. order to be properly installed.
