Be it known that 1, EDGAR E. G-nnvn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Pitinan Connections for Oil-Well Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The prime object 01 my invention is to provide a new and improved wrist-pin structure particularly designed for use in connection with oil well apparatus, the present invention especially relating to that class of apparatus patented to me January 18, 1916, No. 1,169,076.
In the patent above mentioned and in the present invention, I have provided, in combination with a pitman for oil well apparatus, a simple and eilicient wrist-pin structure designed for connecting the pitman to its crank. I
A further object of the present invention, in addition to providing a simple and eiiicient connection between the pitman and its crank, is to provide a construction that may be readily utilized in the operation of spudding without the necessity of employing a spud pulley or wheel and other elements heretofore necessarily employed while spudding.
Other objects of the present invention are, to provide simple means for lubricating the 'working parts without removing the pitman from the wrist-pin structure and means for taking up wear.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate applications of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a part sectional and a part elevational view showing the lower portion of the pitma-n and the'wrishpin structure, the section being taken on line 11 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2, a part plan and a part sectional view, the section being taken on line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3, an elevational. view of a portion of an oil well. apparatus showing my invention in connection therewith.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a walking beam of a portion of an oil well rigging, and 2 a pitman secured to the end of the beam by means of a stirrup 3.
4 designates a crank which is attached to the shaft of a band wheel 5, the crank being of the usual type and having a plurality of openings to receive the wrist-pin. 6 designates a spud rope having one end secured to the wrist-pin structure and the other end loosel connected with a cable 7. The cable '7 is connected with a drum 8 mounted on the shaft of bull wheel 9.
As illustrated and as preferred, the pitman 2 is preferably made of metal and is provided at its lower end with a casing or block 10 having a irusto-con'ical shaped opening 11 adapted to receive the wrist-pin structure. Carried by the casing is a pair of spring controlled-catch devices-12 each having an inwardly projected engaging member 13, the latter being adapted to engage the peripheral surface of the wrist-pin structure. v
The wrist-pin structure comprises a wristpin proper 14 having a threaded end 15, a collar 16, an end flange 17, a centrally disposed opening 18, the walls of which are threaded, and a small duct 18 in communication with the opening 18. The purpose of the opening 18 is to receive a quantity of grease for lubricating purposes.
19 designates an adjustable threaded plug adapted to be entered in the opening 18 and engage the threaded wall thereof. Said threaded plug is accessible through an opening 20 formed in the casing 10. Mounted on the wrist-pin 1d and disposed between the collar 16 and the flange 17 is a flange bearing element 21 having its flange portion 22 formed with apertures 23. The bearing element 21 is made in two segments in order that it may be assembled about the Flanged wrist-pin. 24s designates an outer member of the wrist-pin structure adapted to encircle the inner member 21 and be secured thereto by means of bolts 25 passed through said outer member and through the flanged por tion 22 of member 21.

An additional function o'f, ;roove 26 is to .receive and maintain the looped end otthe .spud rope 6 1n the desired position during the operation of spudding.
Means for taking up wear are interposed between bearing member 21 and the outer member 2a of the wrist-pin structure and as shown, these means include a wedge 27 and a (Io-operating screw bolt 28. 3O designates locking means for screwbolt 28.
For convenience in handling the heavy pitman and its block or casing, the block is provided with a roller 29.
It will be seen that the construction herein described is of such a character that the pitman and its crank may be readily connected and disconnected, and after the pitman is removed from and swung to one side of the assembled wrist-pin structure, said structure may be utilized for spudding by simply placing the loop of the spud rope over the wristpin.
The weight, number and cost of the elements entering into constructions of this character and the manipulations of the parts are of considerable importance, and it has been my aim to reduce the number of parts as much as possible, and at the same time provide means whereby the parts may be easily and readily positioned to meet working requirements.
What I claim is:
l. The combination with a pitman and a crank, of means for detachably connecting the pitman and crank including a wrist-pin structure comprising a wrist-pin proper, an inner member, an annular outer member having an outer peripheral configuration and provided with a peripheral groove, said members being concentrically disposed, and means for securing the members together, said pitman having means thereon for engaging in said groove for detachably holding the pitman in connection with the crank.
2. The combination with a pitman and a crank, of means for detachably connecting the pitman and crank including a wrist-pin structure comprising a wrist-pin proper, an inner bearing member mounted on the wristpin, an outer member having a frusto-conical peripheral configuration and provided with a peripheral groove, said. members being concentrically disposed, means for securing the members together, means on the pitman having a frusto-conical surface for engagement with the periphery of the outer memher, and means on the pitman for engagement in the peripheral groove.
3. A wrist-pin structure including a wristpin proper, an inner divided bearing menr her, an outer member having an annular peripheral configuration and provided with a peripheral groove, said members being concentrically disposed, adjustable wedge means interposed between the members, and other means for securing the members together, said groove providing means for engagement with a spudding rope or for cooperating with the pitman.
4. A wrlst-pin structure including a wristpin proper, an inner bearing member having an annular iange and mounted on the wristpin, an outer member having a frusto-conical peripheral configuration and provided with a peripheral groove, said members being concentrically disposed, wed e means interposed between the members co-axial with the wristpin, and locking means passed through the outer member and the flange of the inner member for securing the members together.
5. The combination with a pitman having a casing at its lower end adapted to receive a wrist-pin structure, an assembled wrist-pin structure adapted to be entered in and removed from the casing, means for detachably securing the wrist-pin to the casing and lubricating means for the wrist-pin structure and contained in the Wrist-pin, said casing having an opening through which the lubricating means are accessible.
6. The combination with a pitman having a frusto-conical shaped hollow casing, a wrist-pin structure having a frusto-conical peripheral configuration and an annular groove adapted to be entered in the casing, and locking means or rried by the pitman and engaging the groove of the wrist-pin structure.
7. The combination with a pitman having an opening, and a crank, of means for ad justably connecting the crank and pitman comprising an assembled wrist-pin structure adapted to be bodily entered in the pitman openin said structure including an outer member having a conical peripheral configuration substantially complemental to the pitman opening and provided with a groove, and locking means carried by the pitman and engaging the groove of the wrist-pin structure.
8. The combination with a pitman having a casing at its lower end which is provided with a wrist-pin structure engaging portion, of a wrist-pin, a wrist-pin structure journailed thereon which has a grooved periphery, means on the wrist-pin for preventing the lateral movement oi? the wrist-pin structure, means on the wrist-pin structure adapted to slidably engage the wrist-pin structure engaging portion of said casing, and means on the casing engaging the wrist-pin structures "for retaining the casing and wrist-pin structure in operative position, said means being operable to release the casing from engagement with the wrist-pin structure by moving the casing and pitman in a direction coaxial with the wrist-pin.
9. The combination with a pitman having a casing at its lower end, which casing is provided with a frusto-conical shaped wristpin structure engaging portion therein, of a wrist-pin, a wrist-pin structure journalled thereon, means for preventing lateral move ment of the wrist-pin structure, a frustoconical peripheral surface on said Wrist-pin structure adapted to slid-ably engage the frusto-conical Wrist-pin engaging portion of said casing and having an annular groove therein, catch devices on the casing adapted to cooperate with the groove to prevent lateral movement of the pitman in one direction, said frusto-conical portions preventing such movement in the opposite direction, said catch devices being operable to permit the pitman to be disconnected from the Wrist-pin structure.
