IMPROVEMENT IN BORERS FOR SAMPLING COTTQN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,998, dated August 19, 1873 application filed July 22, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN A. CLARK, of Jackson, in the county of Madison and in the State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and usefulImprovem cuts in Borer for Samplin g Cotton; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in so constructing the auger and handle used for sampling bales of cotton that a leverage power rigidly through an eye at one end thereof, as
in the case of an ordinary carpenters tool, and the bit could only be inserted into the bale, and afterward withdrawn therefrom by a direct push and pull, the entire strength required to do so having to be applied directly to the bit.
In my invention I fit the sampling-auger A into suitable jaws B in the handle 0 D, where it is secured by means of a rivet or pin, and is movable in a direction parallel with the handle. In the construction of the handle I make a shorter length from the point where the auger is hinged to the end 0, which acts as the fulcrum, than from this point to the end D,which 'acts as the lever. The terminal of the short or fulcrum end 0 is slightly curved, and designed to be inserted under any convenient tie which surrounds the bale to establish the necessary fulcrum for the leverage motion.
The operation of sampling is as follows: The short or curved end 0 of the handle is introduced under atie of the bale, the auger A to withdraw the auger.
The length given the handle also secures the advantage of inserting the auger into the bale at any point on its surface without requiring the operator to be in immediate proximity to the place of its entrance, as in the case of angers otherwise constructed; and the leverage power obtained enables the operation of sampling to be done in greatly less time, owing to the more rapid manner in which the anger is introduced and withdrawn.
The difference in the length of the handle I on either side of the point where the anger is attached thereto may be in any desired proportion; and the auger may be folded down against the handle for convenience in renderin g it more portable when not in use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the handle 0 D with ears B B and the auger A pivoted between said ears, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
