ILLUMINATING DEVICE FOR SEWING MACHINES.
T 0 all 'w 7mm it may concern Be it known that l, JosErL-i Comm, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at lll/lashington, District o-f Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illuminating Devices for Sewing Machines,
of which the following is a specification.
` This invention appertains to certain improvements in electric lamps generally, and more particularly to a portable type of the same adapted `to be easily and readily mounted in position on sewing machines or the like for the purpose of illuminating the work done thereon', and to otherwise facilitate the threading of the sewing needle thereof and the manipulation of the presser foot mechanism vfor the proper positioning of the work with respect thereto for accurate sewing operations.
The principal object of the invention is to provide for a lamp support of the class mentioned and one wherein'the lamp carried by the same is readily swung in one direc* tion to: a position as to not in anyway interfere with the ordinary operation of a sewing. machine, when the vlamp is not in use, and in vlanother direction whereby the lamp is automatically lighted simultane- Vously with the final movement of the same to desired operative position, when the lamp willV be disposed in close proximity to the presser foot and needle mechanism of theV machine and to the work being acted upon thereby. f
Another object of the invention is to provide forv an electric lamp of `the type setV forth, and one of an extremely simplified and inexpensive construction and arrangement, durable and efficient in operation, and which is capable of being easily andreadily mounted in or displaced from operative position. v
A further object of the invention is to provide for a portable electric lamp of the character mentioned, and one embodying an extremely simple form of clamping means whereby the lamp may be conveniently supportedfor swinging movements to and fromoperative position, and a similar 'form of switching means whereby the vlamp is auto# matically connected in circi'iitwith a suitable source of current'supply when the lamp is swung to its operative position.
With the foregoing fand other objects in Y view, the invention resides in the. certain Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 13; 1922. .Application filed November 22, 1921. Serial No. 516,977.
novel and useful lconstruction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, set forth in the appended claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which lFigure 1 is a front elevation of the head of a sewing machine of conventional form,
and showing a preferred embodiment of the electric lamp as applied thereto and in its operative position thereon,

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates a resilient clamping element formed of a strip of spring metal, such as steelror the like, of a suitable length to be shaped to substantially circular form with its opposite ends spaced apart for a short distance, one lend from the other, and slightly outturned, as at 11, in a manner to facilitate the engaging of the clamp as a whole around an object in the well known manner of such devices. Secured on the outer surface of the medial portion of the clamp 10 is a disk of metal such as brass 12, which has its inner face shaped to conform to the curvature of said surface, 'and its outer face `flat and tangent to the latter. Mounted onl the outer flat face of this disk 12 is the circular end portion 13 of a supporting rarm 14, of an insulating material,
and the'circular portion of which is of equalA diameter to that of the disk 12, the arm 14 and the disk 12 beingv secured in position on the clamp 10 by means of a single screw 15, which is passed centrally through'the circular portion 13, of the arm 14, and the disk 12, and threaded into engagement with a c0mplementary threaded opening formed in the said medial portion of the clampv 10 for such purpose. Secured to the free end of the arm 14, is an extension arm 16, which has its connected end cutaway to form a recessed portion for lthe seating Atherein of the end of the arm 14, and-these parts are secured together, one in alignment with the other,A by means of rivets, screws or the like 17. This extension arm 16 isA formed of insulating material and has ay bore 18 extending longitudinally thereof from a point inwardly from its recessed connected end portion and opens outwardly of its free end and into the bore of a lamp socket member or sleeve 19, which is fitted over the free end ot the arm 16, substantially as shown.
The lamp socket member or sleeve 19 is formed ot an insulating material, corre spending; to that, of the extension arm 18 and the arm 111, and has fitted into the outer end ol' its bore,'beyond the connected end of the extension arm 16, a. threaded metal socket 2() for the screwing therein of the usual threadedbase ot' an electric lamp 21, the latter being` preferably provided `with a reflector 22, whereby the light rays from the same are concentrated and projected for- Yardly from the end oit the bracket arm formed by the arm portion' 14 and the eX- tension arm 16. The usual center contact oit the base of the lamp 21 engages with the free end ot a resilient Contact nger 23, when the lamp is screwed inwardly of the metal socket 20, and this finger 23 is secured in position within the outer end of the bore V1S, of the-.extension arm 16, by means of a screw 2:1, which is threaded into posit-ion so as to not only retain the contact finger 23 in place, but also serves to secure the lamp socket member or sleeve 19 on the arm 16, substantially as shown. The contact finger 23 is electrically connected to one end of a conductor 25, which is passed rearwardly through the bore 18, of the extension arm 16, and outwardly of an opening 26 inthe wall thereof. and from thence leads to and connects at its other end a contact segment or strip 27, which is secured on the circular portion 13, ot the arm 14, by means oit a screw or thelike 28. rFhis contact segment or strip 28 is disposed adjacent to the periphery ot' the circular port-ion 13, so that, when the bracket arm is swung* on the screw 15 as its pivot, it will be moved into Contact with a resilient Contact finger 29 curved over the peripheral edge ot the circular portion 13 from its point ot support on a screw 30 secured in the peripheral edge ot the disk 12 on the clamp member 10.
Simi] arl ythe metal lamp socket 2O in the bore ot the socketsleevc 19, carried at the outer end ot the arm extension 16, is electrically connected to one end ol a coiuluctor 31, which passes rearwardly therefrom in the bore 16 of: the lat-ter, and connect-s at its other end a bindingg` post 32 secured in the wall of the bore 18 adjacent the inner closed end thereof. A battery 33 is now connected, by means ot a conductor 3-1, to the screw 31 et the contact finger 29, and, by means ot a conductor 35, to t-he binding post 32 carried by the arm extension 16, when, upon swinging the `bracket arm formedby the arms 14 and 16 on its pivot screw 15, the contact segment or strip 27 frictionally engages under the contact finger 29, when the circuit from the battery `33 `will be closed tothe'lamp 21.
In the particular adaptation of the lamp thus provided, and as shown in Fig. 1, the clamp member 10 is to be snapped over the arm a o'l2 a sewing machine head, and when the lamp is not in use, the bracket arm thereof is swung upwardly to a position to lie in close parallel relation with respect to the arm a, where it will in no way interfere with the ordinary operations of' the machine. Now, with the conductors 34 and leading from the battery 33 and connecting the. screw 30, of the Contact linger 29, and the binding post 32, respectively, and it is desired to make use of the light from the lamp 21 on the work during' the operation of the machine, or to facilitate the threading of the needle ot' the latter, when the machine is inoperative, the bracket arm of the lamp 21 is swung downwardly on its pivot 15, and, when properly positioned to have the deflector 22 throw the beam of light 'from the lamp directly onto the presser foot and needle portions of the sewing mechanism, the contact segment or strip 27 will frietionally engage under the resilient contact finger 29, whereby the circuit is closed to the battery and the lamp 21 will be lighted, the frictional contact between the contact segment or strip 27 and the contact finger 29 beine' suflieient to maintain the bracket arm in such operative position as long as is desired to illumina-te the workinga point ofthe machine. l
From the foregoing, it will be noted that in applying,- the lamp as a. whole for use in the manner indicated for the same and on a sewing;Y machine, the contact finger 29 and the contact segment or strip 27 must be properly positioned one with respect to the other so as to eflcct the closing ot the circuit between the battery 33 and the lamp 21 only during the final movement oit the bracket arm carryingr the lamp to the desired operative position, whereby the light beam 'trom the latter is directed onto the work at the exactpoint ot the sewing operation, and so that the said contacts 27 and 29 will remain in ilrictional engagement to hold the arm and the'lamp in such position.
It is to be well understood that, while a preferred embodiment ot the lamp and its supporting and switching means have been described and illustrated herein in specific terms and details o't construction, arrange ment and operation, various changes in and modifications of the same may be resorted to without departing from the spirit ot the invention, or the scope of the claim appended hereto.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed, is
