Be it known that I, REINER \V. ERDLE, a-
citizen of Germany, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stenciling Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to stenciling devices and more particularly to means for facilitating the application of luminous material to characters on dials and other devices,
one object of the invention being to provide means whereby the dial or other device may v be accurately positioned and held with respect to the stencil, and also to provide simple means to hold the stencil and to permit the same to be moved toward and from the dial or other object on which the luminous material is stenoiled.
Vith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 h apex of this frame, an arm 2 projects in an I inclined direction for a purpose hereinafter explained. One face of the triangular frame 1 affords an inclined platform 3 on which the base 4 of a guide 5 is mounted and may be adjustably secured to said platform with the use of one or more bolts such as indicated at 6. A carriage 7 is mounted on the guide 5 and is horizontally adjustable thereon by means of a screw feed, such as indicated at 8, and the screw of this feed may be provided with a hand wheel 9 having a suitable knob 10 thereon. The carriage 7 is provided with guides 11 disposed at rightangles to the guide or guides 55, and mounted to sllde on said guides 11 is a carriage 12 and for moving this carriage in a direction at right angles to the direction of movement of the carriage 7 a screw feed indicated at 13 may be employed,the screw of said feed having thereon a wheel 14 provided with a knobor handle 15, The carriage 12 carries a plate or bracket 16 which is suitably secured thereto and on this plate or bracket, a worm wheel 17 is mounted, a worm 18 being provided for actuating said worm wheel and the shaft which carries the worm 18 may be provided with a knob 19 to facilitate its manual operation.

The pipes 23 are connected with a coupling 25and with the latter a pipe 26 communicates at one end and the other end of this pipe is provided with a rubber bulb 27. These devices provide pneumatic or suction means for holding a dial 28 to be operated upon, tightly against the rubber facing of the table 20.
The stencil 29, through the medium of which luminous material may be applied to the characters on the dial 28, is supported by a frame 30 having hinged connection, as
indicated at 31 with a bracket 32, and the latter is provided with arms such as indicated at 33 which lie against the inclined arm 2 of the frame 1. The arms 33 are provided with elongated slots 34 for the passage of bolts 35, .said bolts also passing through the arm 2 and provided with threaded portions to receive thumb nuts 36 whereby the bracket 32 carrying the stencil frame is adjustably secured to the arm 2 of the supporting-frame 1.
The stencil 29 may be made of sheet celluloid and is clamped at one edge between plates 37 by means of bolts 38 provided with thumb nuts 39. The other or lower edge of the stencil 29 is clamped, by means of bolts 39 and nuts 40, between plates or strips 41 and 42. The plate or strip 42 is provided at its respective ends with rods 43 which pass through guides 44 rigid with the open frame 30, and on said rods, springs 45 are located between the guides 44 and the bar 42. It will be observed that the thin stencil sheet is fixed at one end to the stencil frame 30 and that the other end of said stencil sheet is so connected with the frame 30 through the medium of the spring pressed clamping characters of the stencil.

By means of my improvements luminous material may be very quickly and accuratelyapplied to characters on such objects as clock dials and the like and the loss of the expensive luminous material and the inaccurate application of the same as well as the time consumed incident to the hand work heretofore employed, will be obviated.

5. Ina device of the character described, the combination with a frame having an inclined platform and provided with an inclined arm, of a work supporting table, sup porting and adjusting means between said table and said platform, a bracket adjustably secured to the inclined arm of said frame, a stencil frame hinged to said-bracket, a stencil secured at one end to said-stencil frame, bars between which the other end of the stencil is clamped, and yielding means connecting said bars with the stencil frame.
