Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J was 13, 1922.,
v Application filed September 22, 1921. Serial No. 502,371.
To. all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CURTIs E. DULL, a
citizen of the United States, residing at- Ohio City, in the county of Van Wert and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Headlight, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide a simple means whereby an operator, at will may extinguish the main light of an automobile, and turn on an auxiliary lamp, the auxiliary lamp being so shielded and protected as to cast its rays downwardly upon the roadway,
the'end in View being to avoid blinding of approaching pedestrians,'and the drivers of approaching vehicles.
It is within the province of the d sclosure hood 8. The entire inner surface of the hood, or such portions thereof as may be desired, may be poated to form a reflector.
The lamps 7 and 17 may be wired up in var. 1ous ways. Thus, a conductor may lead from one side of the lamp 17 to a ground indicated at 21, a conductor 22 leading from the other side of the lamp 17 to a 'switch point 23. Similarly, a conductor 24 may lead from one side of the lamp 7 to a ground'25, a conductor 26 leading from the other side of the lamp 7 to aswitch point 27. The numeral 28 denotes a .battery or other source of electrical energy, a conductor a 29 leading from one side of the battery to a ground 30. From the other side of the battery, a conductor 31 leads to a switch 32,
to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view,
7 which will appear as the descriptionpro ceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of arts and n the. details of construction hGIBII IELftBI'dBSCI'lbQd and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention;
' In the accompanying. drawings:
. Figure 1 shows in vertical" section, a device constru'cted'in accordance with the in-' vention, parts appearing in elevation; and
, wall 9 of the hood 8 is provided with a Figure 2 1s a diagram showing the-circuits.
- In carrying out, the invention thereis pro- I vided a support, denoted generally by the numeral 1 and including a pedestal 2whereon is mounted a-main casing3 carrying a reflector 4 and a lens 5 of any desired construction. A socket 6 is mountedin' the main casing l and in the reflector 1,4: and carries an electric lamp 7.
A hood 8 is provided, the same including a rear wall 9, side walls 10 connected thereto,
a downwardly and rearwardly inclined top- 11 connected to the upper edge of the-rear wall9, anda downwardlyand forwardly inclined front walli12 connected to the side walls 10 and-to the top, 11,.the rear wall 9 having afiange 14 connected by a' securing element 15 to the main casing'3. The rear socket 16 wherein an, electric lamp 17 is mounted, the lamp beingdisposed within the adapted to cooperate with the switch points 23'and 27. When the switch 32 cooperates with the switch point 27, the lamp? will be lighted, whereas, when the switch 32 codownwardly toward the ground, it being practically impossible to blind or confuse a pedestrian or the driver of an approaching vehicle. Y
A lens75 may be placed in the hood 8, the lens being located in any desired position.
- What is claimed is: The combination with an automobile headlight including a main casing and a front lens, of a hood mounted on top of said casing-and comprising a front wall abruptly inclined downwardly and forwardly and overhanglng the upper portion of said lens, a wall extending downwardly and rearwardly from the upper end of said" front wall, and an upright rearwall merging at its upper end into said second mentioned wall, and alampearried by said rear wall.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
