CARTRIDGE FUSE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, THOMAS GoLsoN, a citizen of the United' States, residing at Chicago, 'in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridge Fuses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cartridge fuses, and has for one `of its objects the provision of a simple and efiicient device of the character mentioned. A further object is the provision of a cartridge fuse in which the fusible member can be quickly and easily changed or renewed without the use of tools. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
An embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which- F igl isa central sectional view of a cartridge fuse embodying my invention in opel" ative position iny a fuse plug and cut-out.

Fig. 7 is a perspective View of an insulatng tube adapted for use with my cartridge use y Referring more particularly to the drawing, I have illustrated a cut-out or fuse socket 6 of standard Edison type having an elcctrical contact 7 in the bottom of a recess 8 therein, and a threaded shell electrical contact 9 on the side walls of the recess. Into said socket extends a fuse plug 10 which is provided with an electrical contact shell member 11 threaded in the contact 9 of the socket. `An electrical conductor 12 extends from the contact 11 along the plug through an opening 13 in the latter and terminates in an electrical contact 14 on the bottom of a recess 15 in said plug 10. The fuse plug and cut-outor fuse socket shown indicate a suitable arrangement for cooperating with my fuse cartridge, but any other arrangement having suitable contact members capable of clamping my cartridge fuse between them may be used.
The body portion 16 of my cartridge fuse is preferably cylindrical and of a size to substantially lit the recess 15 of the plug 10, as indicated in Fig. 1, but the relative diameters `of said body 16 and recess 15 may be formed so as to permit'the insertion of a tube 25 of electrical non-conducting material, shown 1n I* 7, `in said recess around said body.k A
'longitudinal groove 17 is preferably formed in the body 16 for a fusible member or link 18, but the groove 17 may be dispensed with where there is enough space between the body 16 and the sides of the recess 15 for the link 18. In one side of thebody 16 I preferably form a recess 19 whichserves as an air space around the central portion of the fusible link 18.
At each end of the body 16 I provide a disc 2O which has a stem 21 extending substantially axially of said body through an opening 22 in the latter, into said recess 19. The end portions 28 of the stems 21 may be split and bent over, as indicated in Fig. 8, pro? vided with heads 24, as indicated in Fig. 6, or otherwise formed to prevent the removal Of the stems 21l from said Openings 22. 'Ihe Stems 21 are of sufficient length to provide spaces between the ends of the body 16 and the discs for the ends of the fusible link 18. Said link 18 may be an ordinary round wire fuse or have any other desired shape in crosssection.
A fuse link 18 is put in position by bending anend portion of a piece of fuse wire, or the like, around one of the stems 21 substantially as indicated in Fig. 5, then laying a portion of such wire in the groove 17 bending another portion of the wire around the other stem 21,
then nally breaking the wire olf by bending it back and forth a few times over the edge of the disc 20 on the lastmentioned stem 21. It will thus be seen that no tools are required for changing or renewing the fuse link 18 in the device.
In use, my cartridge fuse is clamped tightly between the contacts 7 and 14: by the plug' 10 being screwed in the cutout 6, or other similar arrangement. action holds the end portions of the fuse link 18 tightly between the ends of the body 16 and discs 20, thereby `insuring efficient electrical connections between contacts 7 and 14. discs 20, and fuse link 18.
I claim 1. A cartridge fuse comprising a body; discs spaced from the ends of said body;
stems extending toward each other and movy This clamping stems for engaging the body to limit movements oi the discs away from the body; and a fuse wire having;` its ends extending hetween the ends of the body and said discs.

A cartridge fuse comprising;` a body having;v a recess in one side and a perforation in each end extending to said recess; a d isc at each end of said body; a stem attached to each dise extending through one of said perfoi-ations into said recess; and means attached to each stem in saidreeess holding such stems against movement in one direction out of said perforation.
