Be it known that- I, ANGE O G. CIcERoHI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hillsville, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Earrings, and

i It is well known that in the ordinary types of ear rings in which a screw is provided for holding the device in place upon the lobe of the car, it frequently occurs that the screwbecomes loosened and may then drop out which will of course result in the probable loss of the entire car ring. It is with this/objection in view that the present in vention has been designed.

An important object of the invention is the formation of the ear ring proper in hingedly connection sections, one of which carries the clamping screw and the other of which either carries or is formed with the nut associated with the screw.

An additional object is the provision of a structure of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to apply and adjust, efiicient in use, positive in its holding action, durable, and

general improvement in the art.

With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Referring more particularly to the drawings and especially to the form shown in Figures 1 and 2 the numeral 10 designates the U shaped bodyof the ear ring which includes a long arm 11 which is provided at its free end with a slot 12, and also which includes a short arm 13'upon the free end of which ishinged as shown at 14, the ear ring section or member 15 which constitutes the ornament or which may be formed as a setting for any jewel or the like. Opposite the slot 12 in the long arm 11, the section or member 15 is provided with a threaded hole ldwithin which is engaged. the threaded end of a screw 17 which is carried permanently by the long arm 11 and which passes through the slot 12 therein. Inwardly of the arm 11 the screw 1'? is formed with an enlarged flange 18 andyoutwardly of the arm. the screw is provided with a relatively large head 19 by means of which it may be turned. In applying thistype of the device to the ear it will be apparent that the screw 17 is passed through the usual hole formedin the lobe of the ear, the lobe of the car being received between the arms of the U-shaped body 10. The hingedly mounted section or member 15 is then swung so that the hole 16 therein will be opposite the point of the screw 17 after which the operator grasps the head 19 of the screw and turns the same so as to screw it into the threaded hole 16. When the device is thus applied it will be readily apparent that it will be held firmly associated with the ear. If it should by any chance occur that the screw 17 becomes unscrewed it is still hardly likely that the ear ring would be lost owing to the fact that the screw still will be extending through,

From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be readily apparent that I have thus provided an extremely sim ple and consequently inexpensive ear ring construction which will be very secure inasmuch as there is a very positive holding action at all times, the construction being turthermore such that in the event of loosening of the screw devices which hold the ear ring in place loss will be prevented owing to the fact that there will still be a member enga ed through the hole in the lobe.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construct-ion and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having thus described my invention I claim;

1. An ear ring comprising a substantially U-shaped body having arms of unequal length, a member hingedly mounted upon the free end of the shorter arm, said hinged section being adapted to support an 0rnament, said hinged section being provided with a threaded hole, the free ends of the longer arm of the body being formed with an elongated slot, and a screw extending through and permanently swivelly associated with said slot and adapted to be threaded into said hole. 1

2. An ear ring comprising a substantially U-shape body member having arms of unequal length, a sect-ion pivotally mounted upon the free end of the shorterarm and adapted to support an ornament, the longer arm of said U-shaped body being threaded, an arm connected with said pivoted section and formed with an elongated slot, and a nut member permanently swivelly associated with said arm within said slot and adapted for threaded engagement upon the threaded end of the U-shaped member.
