Be it known that we, CLARENCE lill. Havi- LAND and LnoN C. Brown, citizens of the United States, residents ot Minneapolis, in thecounty of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boring Machines, of which the :tollowingv is a specification..
Our invention relates to manually oper ated machines'or boring purposes generally tor' reboring the cylinders of internal combustion engines without removing the engine from. the car, truck or tractor on which it may be mounted, or where, the cylinder head not being removable, the cylinders are detached and reboredA tliroirgh the lower end.
A further object is to provide a boring machine which can be easily and quickly mounted on a cylinder and the tools positioned readily for use.
A further' object is to provide a machine having means 'for centering the tool carrier with respect to thevcylinder to be rebored.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description.
The invention consists generally in the constructions and combinations hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

This carrier is provided with horizontal tool seatsl on which suitable bor ingy tools 1Q, are mounted and secured in the usual way. The tool carrier is preferably made .inl two sections, an upper and a lower one ior convenience in forming the sockets for the tools, said sections being secured together after the tool sockets are formed by suitable means such as bolts 13. (See Figure 6).
For revolving the sleeve and tool carrier we provide a gear ring le, locked on the sleeve by'a key 15, said sleeve having a seaty 16 therein to allow longitudinal movement of the sleeve in the gear ring.

Whenever desired, the locking screw 2T may be released so that feed of the sleeve may be performed through the revolution of the screw.
In a machine or tool of this kind it is es` sential to provide some means for easily and expeditiously centering the tool carrier with respect to the bore of the cylinder, and for this purpose we provide a centering head which we will now describe in detail.
34 represent a disc having a hub 35 formed therein which tits wit-hin a socket formed in the tool carrier, and within said hub We provide a laterally movable pin 36 having a round end to it into a socket 37 in the tool carrier and held therein with a yielding pressure by a spring 38. A downward pull on the centering head will disengage the pin from its soclret and allow the removal of the tool. ln mounting the tool in the carrier, the hub is pushed into the socket until the pin snaps into its socket and thereby the head will be temporarily held in place. The outer side of the disc is provided with an annular 'flange 39 having a tapered external suriace 40. 4l is a split ring which encircles the flange 39 and has a correspondingly tapered surface 42 to iit the tapered surface oi' said flange. The outer surface of said split ring is straight and adapted to fit against the wall of the cylinder and when said ring is pressed upwardly it will form a wedge between the walls of the cylinder and the flange 39, and center thc tool carrier accurately with respect to the bore of the cylinder.
For operating this split ring we prefer to form an eXteriorly threaded hub 43 on the under side of the disc 34 and mount thereon a plate 44 having a loop 45 forming a hand grip by means of which the plate 44 may be revolved and moved into engagement with the ring 4l, or separated thereli'on'i. This centering head is used to determine the proper position ol the tool or machine on the cylinder head preparatory to clamping it so that accurate centering oi the tool carrier will be insured, and when the tool has once been positioned and secured by means of its bolts passing through the slot 6, the operator may then reach up into the cylinder through its open lower end, the piston having been removed, and grasping the handle 45 may release the split ring from its clamp l ing position and pull the centering head down into and through the cylinder.` The plate 44 engages a pin 46 in the lower end ott the hub 43, which forms a stop `for said plate and prevents it from being separated from the hub in which it is mountedA W'e claim as our invention:

A boring machine comprising a base having means for mounting it on an engine cylinder, a barrel supported by said base.4 a sleeve mounted within said barrel and vertically movable therein, a tool carrier sup* ported by the lower end ot' said sleeve, a shaft mounted in said base and geared to said sleeve for revolving it, a yoke mounted on said barrel, and a screw mounted in said yoke and depending within said sleeve and having threaded engagement therewith.
2. A boring machine comprising a base having means ttor securing it on' the work to be bored, a tool carrier supported in `said base and having seats for boring tools, a centering device comprising a disc having' a hub and spring-pressed means for tempora rily securing it in said tool carrier, also disc having a flange provided with an externally tapered surface, a split ring encircling said flange and having an oppositely inclined tapered surface to engage the surface of said flange, and means for expanding said ring to seat it against the walls of the surface to be bored and center said base and tool carrier thereon.
A boring machine comprising a base having means for securing it on the work, a tool carrier mounted in said base and having seats itor boring tools, a centering head comprising a disc having a hub and means for detachably connecting it to said tool carrier, said disc having a depending-externally threaded member, a plate internally threaded and movable thereon and provided with an operating handle, and means actuated by the movement of said plate for centering said disc and said tools with respect to the surface to be bored.
4. A boring machine comprising a base having means for securing it on the work to be bored, a tool carrier supported in said base and having seats -for boring tools, a centering device comprising a disc having a hub and means ttor temporarily securing it in said tool holder, said disc having a flange provided with a tapered surface and a split ring encircling said Flange and, having an oppositely inclined tapered suriace to engage the surface oi said fiange, and means for eX- panding said ring to seat it against the walls of the surface to be bored and center said base and tool carrier thereon. p 5. A boring machine comprising a base having means lor securing it on the work, a tool carrier mounted in said base and having seats for boring tools, a centering head comprising a disc having a hub and means for detachably connecting it to said tool carrier, a plate having threaded engagement with said disc and movable thereon and provided with an operating handle, and means actuated by the movement of said plate for centering said disc and said tools with respect to the surface to be bored.
6. A boring machine comprising a base lll) having means for securing it on the Work t0 be bored, a tool carrier supported in said base and having seats for boring tools, a centering device and spring-pressed means for temporarily securing it in said tool carrier, said centering device including a flange provided with an internally tapered surface, a Split ring encircling said 'flange and having an opposite inclined surface to engage the surface of said flange, and means for expanding said ring to seat it against the Walls of the surface to be bored and center said base and tool carrier thereon.
7. A boring machine comprising a base having means for securing it on the Work to be bored, a tool carrier supported in said base and having seats for boring tools, a centering device, a spring-pressed means for temporarily securing it in said tool carrier, an operating handle for said centering device yaccessible through the open end of the article being bored, said spring pressed means being also accessible through said open end for disengaging said centering device When said tool carrier has been centered with respect to the Work.
