IMPROVEMENT lN APPARATUS FOR OILING, TESTING, AND WASHING FIRE-ENGINE HOSE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,885, dated August 19, 1873 ;,application filed February 28, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERsoN NoYns, of Lowell, in'the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Apparatus for Oiling Fire-Engine Hose, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
This invention relates to and consists of a new and useful improvement in the apparatus for oiling fire-engine hose, and in the new method or process of oiling such hose, or of thoroughly filling or stuffing the leather with oil or grease, by pressure applied within the hose, by the force of a pump or other equivalent means, thereby saving much time and expense in taking good care of the hose, and protecting and preserving them in better condition and for a longer time than by the old mode of oiling or greasing on the external surface.
In the said drawing, A represents an ordinary oil tank or reservoir, provided with a common forcing-pump, B, the nose of which is furnished with a hose-connecting pipe, D, and a pressure-gage, 0. At one side, or forward of the pump, is an inclined trough, H, for supporting a joint or length of hose, F, one end of which is coupled onto the end of the pipe 1), and the opposite end is covered with a cock-furnished cap. The pipe I) has a cock-furnished pipe, m, leading from its under side to the tank A, by which to empty the hose. To the lower end of the inclined trough a second pipe, is, is connected. This pipek may enter the tankA and convey surplus oil from the trough to the tank, or it may be flexible and hang over and discharge water into a funnel, 1?, leading to drainage.
The funnel 0 is for filling the tank. The gage O is to indicate pressure when oiling or testing hose.
For oiling said hose it is coupled to the pipe D or to the pump-nose, which may have a pipe, m, and a cock, 0, the hose extended in the trough, as shown, and oil inthe tank A pumped and forced into the hose, at first opening the cock 9 to allow the oil to expel the air from the hose, then closing the cock, and the pressure of oil within the hose is raised and retained until suitably forced into the pores of the leather, or through it, thus completely filling or stuffing the leather with oil or grease, from its inner surface outward, which not only renders the'hose better and more capable of resisting the action of water, but it softens, protects, and preserves the leather much better and more effectively than external oiling, which is wholly dependent on capillary absorption, penetrating only a very short distance, to be forced out by water under pressure from the fire-engine or hydrant.

My improved apparatus is adapted for testing hose by substituting water for oil in the tank, and by working the pump to raise sufficient pressure, indicated by the gage. The hose lying in the inclined trough, and distended by Water-pressures, may be conveniently washed or cleansed on its outer surface, and then the water drawn off by the pipe m into the tank A, as before stated. The water used for washing the outside of the hose is let oft through the flexible pipe 70, through the funnel P, and to drainage.
I claim as my invention- 1. The inclined trough H, in combination with the tank A and pump B, with a pipe, m, as described, all arranged and operating in the manner and for the purpose specified.
2. The method or process substantially as herein described, of oiling fire-engine hose, viz., by filling the hose with oiling material, and by pressure applied to force the oil into or through the leather, as set forth.
