Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. RosE, a citizen of the' Ilnited States, and a resident of Baltimore, Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disinfecting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of disinfecting apparatus in which the liquid contained in a suitable reservoir is slowly discharged therefrom, preferably by capillary attraction.
The objects of the invention are to provide a disinfecting apparatus which is capable of being filled nearly to itsfull capacity and which shall have a uniform discharge.
A further object of the invention is to provide a disinfecting apparatus which is peculiarly adapted for use in railway cars, steamships, and other vehicles.
The invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in

The present invention is in the nature of an improvement upon the disinfecting device disclosed in my Patent No. 641,548, dated January 16, 1900.
Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates the tank or receptacle for the disinfecting fluid, Which may be of any suitable size, shape, and material. Within the receptacle is a float 11, which may also be of any suitable shape or material. As shown, the fioat is constructed of Wood. It is provided with a transverse bar or support 12 for a wick-tube 13, said tube being of sufficient length to project above the level of the fluid in the receptacle, and its lower end being adapted for connection to a flexible tube 14, which connects the tube 13 to a discharge-tube 15, xed in the bottom 16 of the receptacle 10. In the wicktube 13 is a short wick 17, which hangs over the side of the tube with its end in the fluid. The branch of the wick within the tube should be longer than the branch which dips in the Huid, so that a siphoning action will take place. In operation the Wick absorbs the fluid by capillary attraction and discharges it very slowly into the tube by reason of the siphoning action, due to the difference in length of the branches or legs of the wick.
To prevent the flexible tube 14 from kinking or collapsing, I preferably place within it a flexible support for the walls of the tube, such as the chain 18.
The cover 19 of the tank is provided with a filling-opening 20, which is preferably kept normally closed by a .pad or stopper 21, supported on a spring-plate 22. A keeper 23 may be arranged to prevent the spring 22 from being injured or detached while the receptacle is being filled.
The base 24 of the apparatus may be of any desired form, that shown being the same as illustrated in my previous patent. fluid from the pipe 15 drops upon a pad of absorbent material 25 in the bottom of the base 24. A part of the Huid evaporates through openings 26, and the remainder drops from the discharge-pipe 27. Any suitable means may be used for connecting the apparatus to a wall or other support.y As shown in Fig. 3, the back of the receptacle has extensions 2S, through which' the nails or screws may be driven into the wall to support the apparatus.
The apparatus may be refilled at any time by depressing the spring 22 and pouring the fiuid in through the opening 20. The opening is arranged directly over the wick 17, so that the inflowing fiuid will drench the wick and prepare it for immediate action. It will be seen that the fluid cannot splash out of the receptacle, and the apparatus is therefore especially useful for railway-cars, steamboats, and other vehicles. The fioat preferably has a central opening 29, and the wick is preferably arranged near the center of the opening. This insures the wick being immersed in the fluid uniformly, regardless of the splashing of the fluid on the sides of the vessel and regardless of the angle at which the apparatus v may be held. As the fluid becomes exhausted the float sinks and the dischargetube 14, which should be of soft rubber or similar material, coils on the bottom of the receptacle, as shown in Fig. 2. y
The apparatus described permits the vessel to be filled nearly to the top and provides for a very slow and uniform discharge, and hence a single filling will last for a considerable period. The receptacle may be relled quickly, without removing or deranging any part of the apparatus.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi
1. In a disinfecting apparatus, the combination with a receptacle for disinfecting fluid and a float therein, of a fiexible tube depending from the float and connecting the float with a discharge-opening, and a wick carried by the oat and arranged to discharge into said tube.
2. In a disinfecting apparatus, the combination with a receptacle for disinfecting fiuid, of a float therein, a depending iiexible tube having one end connected centrally with the float and having its other end connected with a discharge-opening, and a Wick carried by said tube and depending in the fluid, said wick being arranged to discharge said fluid into said tube.
3. In a disinfecting apparatus, the combination with a receptacle for disinfecting fluid having a discharge-opening in its lower end, of a float within the receptacle, a flexible tube connected with the fioat and with the discharge-opening, and capillary means carried by the float for admitting a restricted flow of fluid to said flexible tube.
4. .In a disinfecting apparatus, the combination with a receptacle for disinfecting fluid having a discharge-opening in its lower end, of a float within the receptacle, a flexible tube connected with the float and with the discharge-opening, and a wick having one end communicating with said flexible tube and its other end depending in said iiuid.

In a disinfecting apparatus, the combination with a receptacle having a dischargeopening in its lower portion, of a float, a flexibie tube connecting the float with vsaid discharge-opening, means in said tube to prevent d it from collapsing, and means carried by the float for admitting fluid to the upper end of the tube.
6. In a disinfecting apparatus, the combination with a receptacle having a dischargeopening in its lower portion, of a float, a iiexible tube connecting the ioat with said discharge-opening, a chain in said tube to prevent it from collapsing, and means carried by thefloat for admitting iiuid to the upper end of the tube.
7. In a disinfecting apparatus, the combination with a receptacle for disinfecting fiuid having a discharge-opening in its lower portion, of a iioat carrying a wick-tube arranged to extend above the fluid, a fiexible tube connecting' said wick-tube with said opening, and a wick arranged in said wick-tube ,and having its outer end depending in the fluid.
8. In a disinfecting apparatus, the combi,- nation with a receptacle for disinfecting fluid, a float within the receptacle and a wick carried by the float, of means for conveying iiuid from the wick to-a discharge-opening in the receptacle, a filling-opening arranged above said wick, and means for normally closing said opening 9. In a disinfecting ap aratus, the combination with a receptacle flr disinfecting fiuid having a discharge-opening, of a float therein having a central opening, a wick-tube supported centrally in said opening, awick in said tube, and a flexible tube connecting said wicktube with the discharge-opening.
