afm ..,a,
Armer/frs ivionnis nniviLiiveiin,v or omo-ado",- Inninorsl' l p' CRIB.
kApplication `filed August' 11 To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known thatfI, Monnis DEMLINGER, a
.citizen of the United States, and a yresident .of- Chicago, inthe county of Cook and AState .of Illinois,` have invented a new vand usefulv Improvement in Cribs, of which the following is av full, clear, and exact description. y l y l vMy invention relates to childs `crib or bassinet, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements `herein described and claimed.
. Anobject of my invention is toprovide a crib thatcan be folded into compact form for convenience in transporting and storing ,the samev when not in use. .i
l A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the `characterdescribed y havingineans for maintaining the foldable parts thereof iny set-up condition. A further object of myy invention is to provide a crib having sides-and ends foldable into adjacent horizontal vplanes vand means for'locking the foldable sides land ends together to precludemovements there` of from vertical'v planes. v Y
A further object ofC my invention is to provide 'a device of the character described that consists `of relatively few parts, `isA strong and `durable in construction, and thoroughly` practical commercially.
Other objects and advantages willappear in the following specification, andi thenovel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out inthe appended claim.
.My invention is illustrated inthe accom-y panying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- V f y Figure 1 is a perspective view of a crib einbodying the invention,- y
. Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view through a fragmentary portion of the crib along the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and' Figure 3 is an enlarged side elevation of a fragmentary portion of the mechanism shown in Figure 2.
In carrying out my invention, I provide similar ends indicated generallyat 1 and 2. Each of these ends embodies a' pair of parallel vertical supporting members or legs 3 3, connected at their upper ends by a cross member 4 and intermediately by a cross member 5. The supporting members or legs 3*?) lare preferably hollow for lightness and square in section as s hown.` v
The ends 1 and 2 are connected by a Specification of Letters Patent.l
, i921. seriai No. :iai/naa `rectangular mattress-supporting frame having iside .bars 6 6- 'connected byy end bars 7 7 The sideandend bars ofthe matti'ess-supporting`v4` frame are' preferably T @me vPatentedl Jiline formed kof angle irons', each" larranged with u one leg thereofinv vertical position and.` with the other leg` thereofuextending inwardly.
4usual spring and; wire netting arrangement, indicated generally at 8,on which the Yinatthe side bars 6- has longitudinally extending guide slots 10 in the vertical leg thereof adjacent to its'ends. ,A threadedy opening 11 eX-` Vtends through'the vertical leg ofeach 4of `the `The mattresssupporting frame carries ithef tress 9 (Ise'ey `Figure 1) is placed. ,.Fiaohy of side bars 6 intermediate the outer end of the guide slot 10 and theadjacent end of the p bar 6. v i .i `A bracket 12 is lprovided lfor each. offthe supporting fin'embers `These brackets are arrangedinI pairs; andluarevvattached .to `the i supporting members 3`by "means of rivets 13,01T4 the like, softhat pairs of bracket arms i 114 whioh'extendfat' -right. .anglesxto the cross member 5 are arranged `to :s'tra'ddle .tlieyer to opposite ends thereof.. A locking' member 16, ,which may have` the forniofh a thumb screw, is carried vby .eachl of the bracket'armslt'- andamay be projectedlinto the adjacent lopening 11 in the vertical leg of the proximate sidebar' when the guiding and retaining member v15 has been moved along the guidevslotplO to a'point adjacent to the outer end of the latter and the supporting leg 3' is in upright position. l hen lboth pairs vof supporting legs have been locked to the mattress-s`upporting frame in this manner, movement of the ends 1 and 2 relatively to the niattressesupporting `frame is'` prevented and a rigid structureis thus provided.
A pair of side members, indicated generallyk at 17--17, are attached at theiredges byvhinges 18 to thel side bars 6-6,`vvhereby the Aside members 17 may be swung inwardly to lie in superposed relation on the mattress 9. Hooks 19, `carried by the supflatter by hinges 24:.
porting members 3 at their upper ends, normallyv engage with eyelets 20 carried by the side members 1-7 to maintain the latter in vertical position, as illustrated in Figure 1. Each of the sides'17 and each ot' the ends .1 and 2 may be equipped with a suitable screen, such as indicated at 21. r1`he supporting legs 3 may likewise be supported on wheels 22, whereby the device may be moved readily about a room when inset-up condition. vThe ends 1 and 2 may also be provided with means for covering the crib to protect a vchild placed therein-from flies and other insects. To this end, an auXiliaryside -frame23 is provided for each of the primary side members 17 and is vattached to the A triangular frame member 25 is provided for each of the ends 1 and 2 and is attached to thelatter by means of hinges 26. The auxiliary side members 28 and 24 are `equipped with screens, as illustrated, and are arrangedto cooperate, when in the positions illustrated in Figure 1, to provide a cover for' the de vice. y
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. When the device is in set-up condition, a yrigidy structure is attained and the crib may be moved readily about a room as a unit. The device may be placedfin condition :tor stor age o-r transportation inthe following man` ner. They auxiliary side members 23 are swung outwardly and downwardly about the hinges2l against the side members 17. The hooks 19 are then moved out ci' engagement with the eyelets 20 and the side members 17 `are swung inwardly to lie insuperposed relation on the mattress 9. The triangular frame ymembers 25 are likewise swung outwardly about the` pintles of the hinges 26. The locking members 16 are then withdrawn from the openings 11. The end 1 is kthen f moved about the axisv ofits pivots 15 vuntil ina plane substantially parallel with the mattress-supporting frame and is then slidably moved toward the end 2. The latter is fest that all parts of the crib will be folded into compact form when the device is in knockdown or collapsed condition.
y It is important to note that each bracket arm 14 has a laterally extending integral lug 7 arrangedv to overlie the adjacent side bar 6 of the mattress-supporting frame when the crib isin set-up condition. `The lugs 27 constitute stop members that limit the move* ments of the ends 1 and 2 downwardly about their pivotal connections and lrelieve the locking pins 16 of any strain to which these members might be subjected otherwise.
lf claim:
A device of the character described comprising a substantially rectangular mattresssupporting frame, said'frame being formed with pairs of longitudinally extendingguide slots in the sides thereof adjacent tov theirk the adjacent end of the frame, a pair of normally upright end members, a`pair of brackets carried by each end member and `provi'dedwith arms adapted to straddle rthe vslotted end portion of the frame, ra guiding and retaining member carried byA each Y bracket arm and partly disposed in the'a'd-4 jacentguide slot, whereby-eachend member is. `pivotally and slidably .attached to the mattress-supporting frame, and a locking member carried by each bracket arm and adapted to be movedat willinto engagement with the acent second named opening through the mattress-supporting*frame when the end member is in upright position'to prevent movement of the end member rela- Vtively to the mattress-supporting iframe.v
