Description

J-. H. YOUNG.
PROTECTED METAL ARTICLE.
APPLICATION HLED MAILZB, 1921.
.srATEs PATENT- OFFICE. A
JAMES HOWARD YOUNG, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO K. ROBERTSON COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION (3F PENNSYLVANIA.
rnorncrnn METAL AnrrcLE.
specification ofLetters Patent. I Pate t d Jung 69 1922 Application filed. March 26, 1921. Serial No. 455,970.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residiiig in Pittsburgh, in the county ofAllegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have 1n- .vented an Improvement in Protected Metal Articles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a protected metal article of that character in which an article of corrodible metal, such as iron'or steel, is protected against corrosion by a layer of asphalt or like bituminous material alone or. 1n conjunction with layers of fibrous material,
such as asbestos, wool, or other fibrous felts.
to provide a protected metal article of the character described, which is provided with a protective covering of homogeneous, substantially non-fibrous, non-metallic layers, which are not soluble in water. A suitable covering of this character is a layer of vegetable parchment, which may be produced by the use of sulphuric acid or through the use of zinc chloride in a manner well-known.
The covering of vegetable parchment is applied to the bituminous or like hydrocarbonaceous material, while the latter is in a tacky condition and is adhesively aflixed thereto, and forms an efi'eotive protection J AMEs HOWARD The particular featuresof the invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Fig. -1 is a plan of a protected metal art1cle embodying this invention, and
Flg. 2, a section on an enlarged scale on the line 2-2, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, or represents an article of corrodible metal, such as iron or steel, which maybe rigid or flexible and of any form, and which is herein represented as ametal sheet.
' The article a is provided with a protective layer 6 of asphalt or hydrocarbonaceous material of like character, which may be ap-' plied in. any suitable manner as by passing the article a: through a bath of melted asphalt. The asphalt or like layer 6 has applied to it while in a tacky condition a layer 0 of vegetable parchment, preferably waterproofed by a film d of cellulose nitrate or acetate. The lager c is homogeneous, substantially .non-fi rous and is not soluble in water, but as it has the property of absorbing more or less water when subjected toa long continued wetting, it is preferred to provide the parchment layer 0 with the waterproofing film d. v
The layer 0 forms an effective barrier against the escape of the volatile constitu ents of the asphalt layer 6 and also against the action of external influences, and on account of its low cost it reduces to a minimum the cost of the protected metal article. It
also is a reflector of light and heat and can be ainted in any color with ordinary paints.
laims:
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a protected metal article comprising an article of corrodible metal, a layer of bituminous or like hydrocarbonaceous material covering said corrodible metal, and a layer of vegetable parchment adhesively aflixed to said hydrocarbonaceous material.
