Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1922.
Application filed January 6, 1921. Serial No. 435,487.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SINCLAIR ToUsEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf Clubs, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention concerns means for eliminating the noise resulting from the rapid motion of a golf club through the air. This noise is objectionable when practicing indoor golf. The noise or swish may be likened to that produced by a switch cutting the air at a high rate of speed. When practicing golf indoors this noise is objectionable to occupants of adjacent rooms, or others, and my invention is intended to furnish a silencer which will avoid this objection and also to secure, for a given power applied, a more rapid motion of the club due to the lessened air resistance and consequently an increase in the distance that the golf ball will be driven.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 represents a golf club with my invention applied thereto in one form.
Fig. 2 is a view of a modification.
I find that the swish of the golf club can be silenced by providing a ridge or rib extending spirally about the shaft, the turns being at about one inch apart as shown at 1.
Instead of using a spiral form of ridge I may employ a series of circular ridges 2 about the shaft of the club, say, at one inch apart. These ridges may be formed on the shaft or may be applied thereto in any suitable manner and of any suitable material. They may be of soft cotton cord, say, one eighth inch in diameter or may be of wire of 22 gauge and these may be laid in single or double strands The spiral turns may be attached or simply laid on the shaft.
Whether the noise mentioned is due to vibration of the stick or to some other cause as, for instance, the creation of a vacuum on the rear side of the rapidly moving stick and the rush of the air thereinto, the result of my experimentation is that the swish is eliminated, and indoor golf can be practiced in silence with the means I have described above.
The use of my invention also results in a more rapid movement of the club, for a given power applied thereto, as compared with clubs not having my improvement and hence other things being equal a 1onger drive will result from the use of my improved club in respect to that which will be given by an ordinary club.
The subject matter of Fig. 2 will be claimed in a divisional application.
I claim: I
1. A. golf club having its shaft below its handle portion provided with a ridge extending about the same. p
2. A golf club having a substantially cylindrical exterior surface with a protuberant portion on the shaft below the handle portion thereof and extending circumferentially thereabout, substantially as described.
3. A golf club having a shaft substantially cylindrical in cross section and provided in that portion thereof which lies below the handle part with high and low surface portions extending circumferentially thereabout, substantially as described.
a. A golf club shaft having at a point below its handle part an integral protuberance extending around the same, substantially as described.
I11 testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
