Description

cemnnns r. THAJICHEE, or raovrnnncn, nnopn IsLAnn.
BOTTLE STOPIEER.
T 0 all whom it may concern} Be it known that I, CHARLns F. TI-IATCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bottle stoppers, and relates more particularly to the rubber stopper itself, which latter is commonly einployed in connection with bails and eccen-' trics, so as to close the bottle.
, The primary object of the invention is to provide a-loop structure which is embedded into the rubber of the stopper during the process of themanufacture thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby'the loop will be effectively related to or secured in the rubber of the stopper, so as to prevent pulling out or other movement of the loop with relation to the stopper. I V I Still further, the invention aims to provide a simple and economical form, of loop structure, and to also provide an integral p art of the rubber body which passes through a part'of the loop so as to more effectively anchor the loop.
Further and other objects will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description. I
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the preferred form of the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view of 'a modified form;
Figure 3 is a similar view of a further modified form of the invention; I
Figure 1 is a view taken on line 4+4: of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a plan view of the washer of Figure 1; and
Figure 6 is a similar view of the washer of Figure 2. I
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention the stopper is formed with a body 1, top flange 2, and an upper reinforcing disk 3, which latter also serves as a washer seat. In the preferred form a piece of wire is employed bent between its ends to form a loop or eye 1 through which the usual bail of the fastener proper extends. A washer 5 seats on the disk 3 and acts as a wear surface, upon which the bail operates during compression of the rubber incident t locking of the stopper. wire are then reversely curved in opposite directions as indicated at 6 to form an eye or loop 7, the wire terminals 8 extending in opposite direction as shown in Figure 1. This loop structure is molded in the rubber body so that an integral part 9 of the latter will extend through the loop 7, this integral part being connected at its ends to the rubher body. In addition the disk 3 will have a part 10 which extends across the bottom of the eye or loop 4, and since the ends 8 also project into the body of the rubber it will beseen that the loopstructure will be firmly anchored to thefsaid body. In this form of the invention the washer 5 is formed with a large circular eye 11 edits to completely.
receive the loop 4: in any position of eye 11.
' In Figure 2, a single loop structure is em-.
ployed'and in which a single piece of wire is bent to form an ovaloid loop 11, the wire terminals 12 extending outwardly 1n opposite directions andinto the'body of the rub- 1 her. In this form it will be seen that an integral part 13 of the rubber body similar to part 9 in Figure 1 is provided, with the exception'that the part-'13 does not occupy the'entire loop, leaving th'e upper part thereof open to receive the bail 0f the fastener. The part 13 extends flush with the top of disk 3. In this form a washer 14. is or may be employed having an elongated hole 15 which receives the bail 11.
Figures 3' and a showv a sheet metal or other fiat piece of metal which is indicated at 16 and has eyes 17 and 18 punched out or otherwise formed at its top and bottom.
The lower end of the metal plate is split at I 19 and the resultant parts 20 are turned outwardly at right angles and in opposite directions. In this form it will be seen that the ends 20 are embedded in the rubber body and the latter has an integral part 21 which extends through the eye '18 similar to the part 9 in Figure 1. Also in this form a somewhat ovaloid cross-section metal ring 22 is employed which encircles the disk 3and seats on the flange 2, so as to provide a wearing surface on and against which the hail of the locking fastener exerts its force.
From the foregoing it will be seen that in each form of the invention a loop structure is provided which has a bail receiving eye, oppositely extending ends or feet embedded in the rubber body, and an integral part of the eye with a and said oppositely extenc thus in each instance'effecting positive and .certain securement or anchorage of the loop structure within the rubber body. In actual practice it has been found that it is impossible to remove the loop structure from the rubber body without cutting or destroying the latter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a bottle stopper, a rubber body, and a loop structure having a body portion provided with a bail receiving eye in its upper end andhaving an eye-like part in its lower end spaced from the bail-receiving eye, said loop structure being embeddedin the rubber body and an integral part of the latter extending through the eye-like part in the lower end of the loop structure and for a distance below the latter.
2. In a bottle stopper, a rubber body, and a loop structure having a body portion provided with a bail receiving upper eye and having a lower eye-like'part, said loop struc time having. partsbelow the lower eye-like partwhich extend in opposite directions and are completely embedded'in the rubber body and the latter having an integral part which extends through the lower eye-like part and for a distance below the latter.
In a bottle stopper, a rubber body and a loop structure having its lower end completely embedded in the body and having an pair of oppositely extending parts at thebottom of the eye, said body having an integral part extending through the eye ing parts being completely embedded in the rubber body and located above the bottom of the rubber body.
4. In a bottle stopper, a rubber body and a loop structure consisting of a metal plate having a pair of eyes formed therein, the lower end of the plate being embedded in the body and arranged abovethe bottom of the body and with an integral part of the latter extending through the lower eye, and projections borne by the plate and extending laterally therefrom and completely embedded in the rubber body.
5. In a bottle stopper, a rubber body, and a flat 'metal plate having an upper and a lower eye, the upper eye extending beyond the body and an integral part ofthe latter extendingthrough the lower eye, the lower end of said plate being bifurcated, and the turcations extending in opposite directions and embeddedin the rubber body.
6. Ina bottle stopper, a rubber-body having an upwardly extending reinforced part of less diameter than that ofthe body,an apertured washer associated with said reinforced part and having its upperface extending thereabove, and a loop structure having its upper end aperture of the washer and having its lower end embedded in the rubber body.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to thisspecification-in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. v f
