To all whom 'it may concern:
Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Safety Razors, of
which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification,
This invention relates to improvements vin razors and 'more particularly relates to Figure 3 1s a section takenon the line those commonly known as safety razors.
' The primary aim of the device of my inyention is'to impart to: the blade a shearing property or function while in use, and to accomplish this by a simple and economic structure, capable of quick and facile assembly and disassembly.

Referring in detail-to the preferred embodiment of my invention, 10 designates the head portion of the razor, said head on the being formed with an intermediate ofi'set portion 11, provided with a threaded opening to receive the threaded shank 12 of a handle 13, the handle being provided with a plurality vof knurled portions 14.
The head portion or frame 10 is bent downwardly to form an angular portion 15 forming a blade support, the free margnr of the blade support 15 being provided with a plurality of tongues 16 which project slightly beyond the cutting edge 17 of the blade 18 to form a guard.
The blade 18 is provided with a pair of slots 19 in alignment with the longitudinal axis of the blade and the rear edge 20 of, the blade is provided with a notch 21 for a urpose which will hereinafterappear. The

The outer edge of the blade retainer 24 is beveled to expose the cutting edge of the blade 18 and is provided with lugs 25 at its inner opposite corners, said lugs being twisted as at 26 into vertical alignment and provided with openings 27 to receive bearing screws 28, said bearing screws engaging in upturned lugs 29 formed on the opposite end of the head 10 of the razor; The inner ends of the screws 28 are provided with bearing portions 30, which engage in complemental openings in the ends of a roller 31. The member 24 is adapted to be swung upwardly to expose the blade and to permit such movement. The free end edges of the retainer are provided with finger pieces 32 for this purpose. The lugs 25 are provided with cam portions 33 which engage the, free ends of spring tongues 34 formed on a plate 35 secured to the under face of the blade support 15 by means of a screw 36.
The roller 31 'is knurled as at 37 on its peripheral surface and is provided intermediate its ends with a sinuated peripheral groove 38, adapted to receive a pin 39 carried by a lever 40 pivoted at 41 to the head 10 ofcthe razor. The free outer end of the lever 40 is adapted to engage, as shown in Figure 3, in the notch 21 formed in the inner non-cuttin edge 0% the blade 18.
In use, t e retainer 24 is raised by means of the lug 32 clear of the support 15. A blade similar to the blade 18 is placed upon the support with the slots 19 therein engaging the heads 23 of the pins 22 and with the notch 21 in engagement with the free end of the lever 40. The retainer is then moved back to the original sition and the razor is ready for use. s the razor is drawn over the face of the user the roller 31 contacts therewith and rotative movement is imparted to said roller. Rotative movement of the roller imparts oscillating movement to the lever 40 which in turn reciprocates the blade transversely of the direction of movement of the razor over the users face. Thus a shearing action is obtained which, as pointed out hereinbefore, improves both the efficiency of the razor and speed with which the same may be used. The retainer 24 does not materially hinder the reciprocation of the blade, but the space permitted by the head 23 of the pins 22 is sufficient to prevent the blade from jumping oil the pins.
In the foregoing description of structural details, I disclose a preferred embodiment of my invention, and while not limiting the same to the exact details as enumerated, except in so far as the scope of the claims is concerned, I lay particular stress upon the blade structure and its relation to the particular type of actuating means therefor, especially as concerns the location of the ap plication of motion of the blade.
I claim:
1. A razor comprising a frame, a blade having a notch in the intermediate portion of the rear edge thereof, said blade being slidable transversely on said frame, a roller mounted above and to the rear of the blade, an oscillating lever below the roller and to the rear of the blade and having its free end engaged with said notch, and means on said lever engageable with the roller for receiving motion from said roller.
2. A razor comprising a frame, a blade slidable transversely on said frame and hav ing a notch in the intermediate portion of the rear edge thereof, a roller mounted on 'said frame above and to the rear of said blade, an oscillating lever having its free end engaged in said notch, said roller having a sinuated groove, and a pin on said lever engaging in said groove.
3. In combination, a razor comprising a frame, a blade for reciprocation on said frame, means on the frame engaging the blade only at its intermediate portion, and comprising a lever, a roller above and to the rear of said blade for engagement with said lever, bearings for said roller, a blade retainer, said retainer being pivoted co-incidental with the bearings of said roller and adapted to swing down over the bladewhen in use.
4. In combination, a razor comprising a frame, a blade for reciprocation on said frame, means'on the frame engaging the blade only at its intermediate portion, and comprising a lever, a roller above and to the rear of said blade for engagement with said lever, bearings for said roller, a blade retainer, said retainer being pivoted co-incidental with the bearings of said roller'and adapted to swing down over the blade'when in use, said retainer having cam portions,
and springmeans' carried by said frame to engage said cam portions for retainingLsaid retainer in the protecting position.
5. A razor comprising a frame, a blade mounted for reciprocation on said frame and the frame, said blade. having a notch in its rear edge, a lever pivoted on said head and having its free .end engaging the notch in I said blade, a roller mounted on the frame enses and having a sinuated groove therein, said lever having a portion intermediate its ends engaging in said groove, and means for guidmg the blade on said head,
7.
