' (l A #AJ ATTORNEY lao -UNiTi-:n -STATES PATENT ori-ica l WALTER CHANDLER KNAPE, or ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, AssreNoR To LIBERTY f ,BREAD-SIEGEN.' INC., 0F ROCHESTER,
-YfOBK.
To aJZZ whom 'it mayI concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER CHANDLER NAPP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe .and State of New' York, have invented certain. new andY useful Improvements in Slicing Machines; and I do declare the following to, be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. 4
My invention .-relates to slicing machines and is in the nature of an improvement on the device disclosed in my pending application for patentv for slicing machines, Serial Number 323,166 iiled September 11, 1919, which has matured in Patent #1,386,393
' dated June 7, 1921.
In said machine, rolls or biscuits are fed continuously over the edge of a revolving circular knife. The object of my present invention is to provide improved means for feeding rolls Iof various sizes to the machine.
further object of my invention is to provide means for more uniformly slicing the rolls, than is possible with a machine such as z identified.
disclosed in my pendin application above Fig. 2 is a pian View 0f the Same with the top of the chute sectioned away to show my improvements therein.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the guide plate removed from the machine, and
Fig. 4 is a substantially transverse section through the chute on the line 1X-4X Fi 2.
e machine illustrated comprises a ,cylindrical base or support 1, in which'l is mounted -a motor 2 having a vertical shaft 3 tothe upper end of which is' secured a circular knifeor blade 4. Pivoted at 45 to the top of' the base is the chute or trough 6 which is adapted to extend across the top of 'the base and has one wall thereof slotted as pending application above More speci cally the object of my present invention is to provide the chute NEW YORK, .A CORPORATION 0F NEW SLIC'ING MACHINE.
-4 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May S0, 1922.
.Application cieli May 5, le20. serial No. 378,943.
at 7 to provide a clearancev for the knife. he opposite side of the 'chute is provided with a projection 8 to provide a clearance for the knife when the chute is adjusted to slice the rolls completely through. The chute is adjustable about the pivot 5 to vary the extent to which the knife projects into 1t for cutting the rolls completely in two or only partly, the forward end thereof resting on a slotted projection 9 to which it is secured in adjusted position by means of a bolt 10 projecting through the slot in the projection 9. A plate 11 is adjustable in the chute toward and from the knife to vary the thickness of the slice. The plate 11 is supported on bars 12 having threaded ends projecting through slots in the side walls of the chute and receive thumb nuts 13 by which the plate 11 is secured' in adjusted position. 4
-The parts above described are substantially the same as those described 'in my referred to My present invention comprises a forwardly extending outwardly iared member 14 se: cured to or made integral with the plate 11, from which the rolls are fed into the chute. If desired the member or support llmay be formed with a flange 15 around'its outer edge to retain the rolls thereon. Secured to the flared support 14 is a guide plate 16 extending forwardly toward and over the knife and is cut away as at 17 to provide a clearance for the knife. The guide 16 is ad- .-justable on the chute and for this purpose va Harige 20 formed on the base'of the rear end of the guide and through *the slots 18 and receive the butterfly nuts 21 on their outer ends. By loosening the nuts 21 the guide 16 can be adjusted along the slots 18 and secured in adjusted position by again tightenin the butterfly nuts. ofthe gui e along the slots 18 moves the guide from and towardthe inner wall of the chute and insures the proper feeding of the rolls between the guide and the outer wall of the' chute.
In the form of my invention illustrated herein, the guide plate 16 is formed with an angle at the point 25 so that the rear end of the guide will be kept substantiallyv par- Adjustmentl` 1ctl Means are also provided for holding the rolls in proper position as they come in contact with the knife to prevent fouling. Said means comprises a plate 22 voperated by gravity and adapted to rest` on successive rolls 'at `the time when they are engaged by the knife. The plate or finger 22 is secure to a rod 23 pivoted at 24 to the guide 1G and extends forwardly and downwardly into contact with the surface of the knife or a roll in position to be engaged by the. knife. As the rolls are successively fed forward, the plate 22 rests upon or engagesv each roll j as it comes into contact with the knife and holds it in contact with the plate 1l during the slicing operation, thus insuring a uniform thickness of the slices out from successive rolls.
Having described my invention, whatl claim and desire to secure by Letters Patl ent is:
1. In a slicing machine, the combination of a knife, a chute for directing the material to be sliced to the knife, and a plate pivoted in the chute and extending forwardly and downwardly overtheknife to engage ,the material to be cut as it is fed into engagement with the knife.
2. In a slicing machine, the combination of a knife, `a chute for directing the material to be sliced to the knife, a guide adinmate instable transversely ofthe chute for adapting-the chute to material of different sizes, and means mounted on said guide yfor holding the material in contact with the bottom of the chute as it moves intovengagement with the knife.
3. In a slicing machine, of a knife,a chute for directing the material to be sliced to the knife, a guide adjustable transversely of the chute for adapting the chute to material of and a plate pivoted on said guide and adapted to rest on the material as it moves into engagement with the knife.
4. A slicing machine, the combination of a knife, a chute for directing the material to be sliced tothe knife, a support for the material having a flared forward end adjustably supported in said chute, and a guide on said support adjustable transversely of the chute.
5. A slicing machine, the combination of a knife, a chute for directing the material to be sliced to the knife, a support for the material havinga flared forward end adjustably supported in said chute, a guide on said support adjustable transversely of .the chute, and a member pivoted on said guide and adapted to engage the material being the combination 4 different sizes,
sliced.
