IMPROVEMENT IN LOCOMOTIVE ASH-PAN CLEANERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,769, dated August 12, 1873; application filed April 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, A. O. DENIO, of Wilmington, New Castle county, Delaware, have invented a Locomotive Ash-Pan Cleaner, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to readily discharge from a locomotive ash-pan the accumulated ashes which interfere with the draft, and at the same time extinguish and render harm less the ignited portions of such ashes.
These objects I attain by so combining with a locomotive ash-pan, c, a nozzle, D, communicatin g with the Water-space of the boiler, as shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawin g, that, when 0011] munication between the boiler and nozzle is opened, a forcible jet of water under the pressure will extinguish the ignited ashes, and at the same time expel them can be turned laterally by means of a handle, E, which enables the engineer to direct the jet to all parts of the ash-pan. It is important that the ignited portions of the ashes should be extinguished before, or as they are being discharged from the ash-pan onto the track.
Otherwise the particles of ignited fuel might be dispersed by the wind and. endanger neighboring buildings; hence water only is discharged from the nozzle.
I am aware that a steam-jet has been employed for removing obstructions from boilertubes of locomotives; and I, therefore, do not claim, broadly, the combination, with a locomotive, of an injecting nozzle and pipe communicatin g with the boiler. It will be apparent, however, that owing to the arrangement of the ash-pan the devices hitherto employed for cleaning flues could not be used for removing the ashes from below the grate-bars.
I claim The combination described, with a locomotive ash-pan, of a nozzle directed to the pan, attached to the boiler and to a cock communicating with the water-space of the boiler, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ASA OBER DENIO. Witnesses:
FRANCIS VINCENT, J NO. H. PUHL.
