Description

1. s. RALPH. MOTORMANS -STO0L.
'APPLICATION FILED SEPT-8,1921.
Patented May 30,1922.
[mven/Z'ar. v M20156 fiifzi ag/Maw 1451 70 rw/e JAMES S. RALPH, OF. SULLIVAN, MISSOURI.
Specification of Letters Patent.
MOTORMANS STOOL.
Patented May 30, 1922.
Application filed September 8, 1921. Serial No. 499,263.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns S. RALPH, a citizen of the United States, residing at vSullivan, in the county of Franklin and State'of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motormens Stools, of which the following is a specification. l i
My invention has relation to improvements in motormens stools, and consists in the novel features of construction more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
The. object of the present invention is to' provide a stool that will be suitable for motormen in that it has a yielding seat that will prevent the jolting of thecar from being transmitted to the motorman. A further object is to provide a stool that is adjustable to different heights, and one that is structurally simple and consists of but few parts. Other advantages will be better apparent from a detailed description of the invention in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the stool; Fig. 2 is a plan view with part of the seatbroken away; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the supporting spring for the seat taken on the line 3-3of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through one of the legs showing the extension screw, for adjusting the height of the stool; Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, F 4 represents the stool supporting frame comprising tubular legs 1, around 'whichnear their lowerends a band 2 is disposed, said band being held to the legs 1 frictionally by straps3,
one being riveted at both ends to the band immediately adjacent'each leg, said strap binding the leg between it and the band. The upper ends of the legs are provided with horizontally projecting end portions 4 flattened so as to contact firmly with the underside of a circular disc or board 5, and two bolts 6, 6 are passed through the flattened end 4 of each leg, through the board 5 and through the overlapping ends a, a, of a hinge spring 7 (of which there are four) said spring being bent from a fiat piece of metal to a substantially rhomboidal outline, the opposite corners b of the rhomboid in a horizontal plane, being rounded and slightly contracted at 00 between the rounded corner I) and sides 0 of the spring. A seat 8 is cured to the flat sides 03 of the springs by lag screws. 9.
If weight is imposed on the seat 8 the springs will yield, the contracted neck a of each spring acting as a hinge, and should the seat be tilted the spring Wlll also bend at the intersection of the sides 0, 0, and overlapping ends a, a.
A screw lOhaving threads t of steep pitch is fitted into the ends of the legs 1, the lower end of the screw terminating in a rounded head 10', and a thumb-screw 11 is threaded through each strap 3 and leg 1, said thumbscrew having a conical point adapted to enter the threads of the screw 10. Thus by loosening the thumb-screw, 11 the screws 10 may be moved in or out of the legs 1 to adjust the seat h 'ght after which the thumb-screws are again tightened. If a very slight adjustment is desired, this may be done by merely turning the screw 10 one way or another, the point of the thumb-screw riding between the threads of the screw 10.
The above described invention is an improvement over that described in the copending application of Win. A. Boyce and myself. filed May 28, 1921, and serially numbered 473,515.
Having described my invention, I claim:
A stool comprising a seat, a supporting frame therefor, and a plurality of springs interposed between said seat and supporting frame, said frame comprising a plurality of loosening the thumb screw.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
JAMES S. RALPH.
