Claims.

This invention relates to canopies, and more particularly to canopies of the type which are attached to combined chairs and play tables, play pens, and sand boxes for infants. It has for its general object to provide a canopy of this type having improved means whereby it may be supported in extended or various partly-folded positions and with improved means for supporting the same from the side rails of a combined chair and table, a sand box or a play pen.

I accomplish these objects in and through the construction and arrangement of parts shown in the drawings hereof, wherein Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of my canopy, Showing the manner in which it may be affixed to the side of a sand box (shown in broken lines); Fig. 2 a plan view of the cover-supporting framework of the canopy and the side supporting members thereof; Fig. 3 a detail in section of a portion of the bottom and side rail of a sand box and showing details of construction of the bracket and clamping means and the lower end of one of the canopy side-supporting members illustrated in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 a detail in perspective of a modification of the clamping means shown in Figs. 1 and 3.

Describing the parts by reference characters, and first in connection with Figs. 1-3 inclusive, l0 denotes the opposite side rails of what is indicated as a sand box and H the cover portion of a canopy which is secured'to the side rails in a manner to be described hereinafter.

The cover II is supported upon a framework of heavy wire stock comprising a pair of opposed U-shaped members, indicated generally at l2 and I3. The member I2, for convenience of description, is referred to hereinafter as the front member and the member [3 as the rear member. ,The front member l2 comprises an elongated front supporting branch I4, the ends of which are connected to side branches l4 and each of the latter of which is provided at its rear end with an eye l 4* mounted upon the adjacent threaded end of a cross brace I 5. The rear member l3 comprises an elongated rear supporting branch [6, the ends of which are connected to side branches I0 each having at its front end an eye [6 which eyes are also mounted upon the ends of the cross brace I 5, the eyes being shown as located externally of and in substantial engagement with the eyes M I! denotes generally the side supporting members by which the canopy frame and the canopy cover therefor are supported from the side rails l0. Each of these members is also preferably made of heavy wire stock and is provided at its upper end with an eye H which eyes are adapted to be received upon the ends of the cross brace I5 exteriorly of the eyes [6 The front and rear frame members l2 and I3 are secured in any desired adjusted position toward or from each other upon the brace rod l5 by means of wing nuts l8 mounted on the threaded ends of the said brace rod inwardly with respect to the eyes M and wing nuts l9 mounted on the outer ends of the brace rod i5. By loosening either of the Wing nuts, the frame members l2 and I3 may be rotated upon the cross rod l5 to the extended position shown in Fig. 1 and secured in such position; or either or both of these members may be rotated to bring either or both of the outer bars [4 and I6 toward the sand box thereby to protect an infant in the sand box from impingement of the suns rays, or from a sudden shower.

It will be noted that the side supporting members I! are curved between the eyesl1 and the vertical lower ends I'F whereby they will be out of reach of an infant particularly when the latter is seated on the chair of a play table such as shown, for instance, in the Hansburg Patent No. 2,161,658.

By reference to Figs. 1 and 3, it will be noted that the lower vertical ends li of the side supporting members are mounted in brackets comprising each a body plate 20 of generally triangular shape having an outwardly projecting flange 20 struck from the top thereof and provided with an opening 20 for the reception of the vertical portion ll of the appropriate supporting member I! and provided at its bottom with a central outwardly projecting flange 20 struck therefrom and having an opening 20 vertically aligned with the opening 20 for the reception of the lower end of this vertical portion I! of the supporting member. The flange 20 is struck out from the middle of the lower end of the body plate, the forks left by said flange being projected inwardly as flanges beneath the bottom of the side rail l0, as shown as 20, and providing means whereby the bracket may be secured to the bottom, as by means of the screws 20 extending through the flanges 20 and threaded into the bottom of the rail ID. A bolt having an eye 2| at its outer end for the reception of the vertical portion 17 of the supporting member I! is located between the

20 and 20 and extends through the body 20 of the bracket and the side rail l0 and is there provided with a 3 nut 2N whereby it may clamp the side member I! against vertical displacement.

In Fig. 4 there is shown a modification of the means for clampin the lower ends of the side supporting members I! to the side rails ID, wherein a clamping plate, indicated generally at 22, is shown as having flanges 23 and 24 projecting from. opposite sides thereof, the flanges 23 being longer than the diameter of the portion 11 of the side supporting member I! while the flange 24 is shorter than the diameter of the said lower portion. 25 denotes a screw extending through the body of the clampin plate adjacent to the lower portion {l of the side supporting member and being threaded into the side rail l0. By setting up on the screw, the clamping plate will be pivoted on the edge of the flange 23 while its body will be brought into tight engagement with the portion li of the side supporting member.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. A canopy comprising a front and a rear frame member each of general U-shape and each of the ends of the parallel legs of the U- shaped members having an eye formed at the end thereof, a cross brace extending through the eyes at the ends of the side legs of the front and rear frame members, a pair of side support members for the said frame members, a cross brace, each side support member being connected to an end of the said cross brace, and adjustable clamping members on opposite ends of the said cross brace for securing the eyes of the said side legs and the upper ends of said side support members to said cross brace.

2. In the canopy set forth in claim 1, the ends of the cross brace being threaded, an inner clamping member on each end of said cross brace on the laterally inner side of the inner eye thereon, said supporting members also having integral eyes formed at the upper ends thereof and engaged with said cross brace, and an outer clamping. member on each end of said cross brace on the outer side of the outer eye thereon, at least one of each pair of clamping members on each end of the cross brace being threaded thereon.

3. A canopy comprising one or more frame members including a pair of side branches spaced laterally of the canopy and each having an aperture therein, a cross brace extending through the apertures of the side branches of the frame members, a pair of side support members for the said, frame members, each side support member being connected to an end portion of the said cross brace, and adjustable clamping members on opposite ends of the said cross brace for securing the said side branches and the upper ends of said side support members to said cross brace.

4. In a canopy set forth in claim 3, a frame member being adjacent each end of the said cross brace, the ends of the said cross brace being threaded, an inner clamping member on each end of said crossbrace on the laterally inner side of the frame and the support member thereon, said supporting members having integral eyes formed at the upper ends thereof and engaged with said cross brace, and an outer clamping member on each end of said cross brace on the outer side of the outer member thereon, at least one of each pair of clamping members on each end of the cross brace being threaded thereon.

5. In the canopy set forth in claim 1, the side supporting members being curved rearwardly between their upper ends and the lower portions thereof which are connected to the side rails in order to leave the front portion of the canopy free for play area.
