IMPROVEMENT IN ADVERTISING-LANTERNS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,719, dated August 12, 1873; application filed February 8, 1873.

To all whom it may concern: f

Be it known that I, SOL. KUl-I, of Jeerson, in the county of Greene and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improve-l ment in Advertising-Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,

and exact description of the construction andoperation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to certain improvements in advertising-lanterns; and it consists in an advertising-lantern having three or more sides, which are composed of two or more rows of changeable advertising-plates, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

The frame-work ofthe lantern may be constructed of wood or metal. The top and bottom are each made of a single piece, either square or triangular in form, connected at their corners by bars, either by mortise-andtenen or hinge joints, so that the parts may be readily detached and packed for transportation. About midway between the top and bottom are horizontal bars, having their ends fastened to the vertical bars. In the upper side of the bottom A, the lower side ot' the top B, and both the upper and lower sides of the horizontal bars or rails O, are grooves, in

which the transparent plates are inserted by sliding them in laterally. The plates D are of uniform size-that is, of the saine height, and of a width the multiple of which constitutes the exact width of one of the sidesso that one may be readily substituted for another when desired. The-characters are either painted, papered, or left clear on the inner sides, ot' which the surrounding spaces are afterward coated with a dark background, so that the letters may be distinguished as well by daylight as when the lamp is lighted at night. By having the letters or characters on separate plates, and' providing a sufficient number of plates, any variety of goods may advertised or names displayed without the necessity of providing a separate plate for each name or variety of goods, as has heretofore been the case.

Attached to the edges of the bottom A are flanges F, which are hinged to the edges, so that they may be turned down to engage with the sides of a post or pedestal holding the lantern, or laid flat on a counter, table, or other support which may be larger than the bottom of the lantern. The flan ges are perforated, so that they may be secured by nails or screws.

The lamp-holder consists of a cylindrical cup oriiange, G, from the bottom of which extend outwardly, in opposite directions, two tongues or strips, g g, one of which passes under a metallic strap whose ends are secured to the bottom A, and the other is held down by one or more buttons pivoted to said bottom. By vmeans of thisl device the lamp is held in place without the necessity of fastening it to the bottom, while the holder itself may be readily removed, when desired, for cleaning, packing, &c.

The chimney consists of a cylinder, H, having itsupper end closed, and its sides perforated to allow the smoke and heat to escape. It is inserted in an opening of corresponding size in the top B, and is held at the proper height by means of a iiange, 71., on its periphery.v By this mode of attachment the chimney Acan be readily removed for lighting or extinguishing the lamp, or for cleaning, packing for transportation, &c.

If desired, the lantern may be provided with a bail, J, for carrying it, or with rings K for K suspending it by cords 0r wires. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

An advertising-lantern shaped as a prism, the sides of which are composed of two or more rows of changeable glass plates, of the same f height, and oi' a width'the multiple of which constitutes the exact width of one of the sides, the said glass plates being separately provided with the letters of the alphabet or other advertising mediums, substantially as shown and described.
