IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINERY FOR FINISHING THE HEELS OF BOOIS AND SHOES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LORENZO P. HAWKINS, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Heel-Securing Machinery, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to improvements in machinery for performing the operation upon boot and shoe heels known as scouring, the class of machinery to which this invention intimately relates being exhibited in Letters Patent of the United States, issued on the 18th day of February, 1873, to L. P. HAW- KINs, of Lynn, Massachusetts, in which a rotary cylindrical disk is employed, the periphery of which is covered with an elastic band, which band, in turn, is covered with a suitable abrading or reducing substance for reducin g the heel-edge to a uniformly eve'n surface.

In carrying out my present invention I have enlarged upon and amplified the powers and performances of a scouring-wheel as heretofore made by proceedings as hereinafter explained.

In carrying my invention into practice I employ, usually, a circular disk of about seven inches in diameter and about one and oneeighth inch thick, which disk or wheel is mounted upon a horizontal shaft duly supported in the machine which carries it. As the abrading surface of the periphery of this wheel is to reduce or scour the edge of a heel it must of necessity be convex upon its exterior to adapt itself to the exterior concavity of the said heel-edge, while, in order that the same wheel may adapt itself to all parts of the heel-edge in which the degree of concavity varies, it is necessary to employ an elastic substance which will yield sufficiently to accommodate this variation. Therefore, to provide for this result, I employ a band of India rubber or other suitable elastic agent, which is confined to the periphery of the wheel in a suitable manner, and this band is to be vulcanized to preserve its form and give it a duit to the band to be thoroughly washed from off the latter when recoating it becomes necessary. To carry out this feature of my inven tion I apply to the periphery of the wheel or disk a coating of course webbing or equivalent material, and I preferably vulcanize this material upon and withthe band, by which it is caused to adhere firmly to or be incorporated with such band. This webbing provides a rough surface of a fibrous character,

to which sand or other abrading material will firmly adhere by the use of a suitable cement, which, without the webbing, would be a difficult if not impossible matter.

After the abrading material has become worn off the webbing the use of warm water will at once remove the cement and small quantities of such material remaining, and leave the periphery of the wheel in a clean condition, highly favorable fora renewed application of cement and sand.

The drawings accompanying this specifica tion represent at A a circular disk or wheel, of the character hereinbefore alluded to, while 13 represents a band of vulcanized India rubber applied to the peripheryuof said wheel,

this rubber band being convex upon its outer edge or periphery to adapt itself to the concavity of a heel-edge. O in the drawings rep- -resents the jacket of webbing applied to the elastic band, and D the outlying mass of cement and sand which is spread updn the outer surface of the webbing or fibrous acket.

I am aware that buffing-wheels have been made with an exterior of vulcanized rubber coated with leather or other material to hold the abrading substance, and this I do not broadly claim.

My invention is designed with particular reference to heel-scouring machines to be used in the manufacture of boots and shoes, and. with a view of adapting a reducing-Wheel to operate upon the heel and to conform to its gontour, as hereinbefore stated; and, thereore,

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:

A reducing or abrading Wheel for heel-scouring machines, provided with a tire or exterior annular band of vulcanized rubber having an exterior surface or periphery of a contour adapted to the shape of the heel to be scoured, and covered by a Webbing or fibrous jacket to receive the coating of abrading material, substantially as and for the purposes shown and set forth.
