An important object ci the invention is to provide an improved upwardly closing valve tor the upper end ot the cylinder which will be assisted in closing by the movement oli the piston rod. u
Another object ot the invention is to provide a device oit the above nature which is strong, durable, inexpensive to manufacture and highly ellicient in practice.

lll rom the i'ioregoing, it will he obvious that upon the start oit the down stroke ot the piston, the valve 28 will be moved slightly ilownwardly through the cap by its contact with the piston rod so as to unseat the valve 2S and permit et air passing through the opening 23 in the cap into the cylinder and thence through the apertures 2? in the tiango 2G and then into thecylinder. rlhe downward movement oit the valve will he checked hy the nut 3l abutting with the top or the cap. The air will continue to be sucked into the upper end ot the cylinderas the piston descends and the ball valve 9 will automatically close to prevent air from escaping' from the lower end of the cylinder through the passageway ll. Simultaneously, the check valve 13 willhe sucked against the seat in the upper nipple l2 while the coacting check valve llt will open and permit air being torcedout of the lower end ot the cylinder through the nipple l2 and thence through the lay-pass into the discharge hose 17. Upon upward strole oit the piston, the inlet valve 9 will open while the check valve ll will hedrawn down against its seat and its coactinr check valve 13 will he opened. The valve 28 oi the cap will he caused to move upwardly against its seat hy its contact with the piston rod and the air being forced up wardly into the cylinder. Consequently, air will be forced out through the upper nipple l2 into the by-path 15 and thence into the discharge hose 17.
In the torni ot' invention disclosed in Figprovided a slightly different ent instance being provided with the inlet opening 34. through which the piston rod 19 extends. lt will be noted that the opening 34 is slightly larger in diameter tl an the piston rod and consequently air is admitted to the cap upon the down stroke ot the piston. The lower end oi the opening Sel flares outwardly as' at 35 to provide the cap with a valve seat, and an upwardly moving valve il@ is mounted upon the piston rod whereby it will close upwardly upon upward movement of the piston. The valve 3G, like the valve 2S in the preceding` form, is engao'ed around the piston rod so that it will not bind the movement ot the rod when the saine is seated. The cap is provided with a depending 37 which is adapted to enclose the valve ani'l to prevent excessive downward movement thereof. The bottom of the cage is provided with a relatively large opening 38 'through which extends the piston rod, and the sides ofthe 'cage are provided. with a plurality ot apertures 39 to permit air entering through the cap to pass into the c vlinder.
