Description
0. A. DEAN.
Circular-Saw Guards.
Paten'td August 12 AM. FHOYO'ZITHOGIMPHICCC #VXK USEORNEJSPROCESS UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
OSCAR A. DEAN, OF BETHEL, VERMONT.
IM'P ROVEMENT IN CIRCULAR-SAW GUARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,702, dated August 12, 1873, application filed June 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR A. DEAN, of Bethel, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Circular-Saw Guard, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to provide means for protecting the operator in using circular saws 5 and consists in a guard consisting of two or more pieces, hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing, Figure l is a sectional side elevation looking from the line .90 a, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view looking down from the line 3 3 Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the table. of the saw-frame. 0 is the circular saw. I) is the adjustable gage to govern the width of the stuff sawed. Attached to this gage is the slotted stand E, made in either one or two pieces, standing perpendicular to the table. F is the slot in this stand. G is a slotted horizontal guard-bar, with a grooved head, H, which slides up and down in the slot F, and is fastened in any desired position by means of the thumb-screw I. J is a guard, which is forked so as to extend on each side of the saw, as seen in Fig. 2. The head K of this guard is confined in the slot of the bar G by means of the thumb-nut L passing up vertically from the table through a mortise in the guard J in the plate M. This plate is on a line with the saw, and serves as a support for B B are the legs.
fastening the guard J, and also as a spreader to prevent the saw from binding. The sawguard, therefore, consists of the horizontal guard-bar G and the horizontal forked guard J. The former slides on the head of the latter when the width-gage D is adjusted, the forked guard being kept stationary laterally by the verticalplate M. By raising and lowering the guard-bar G the two guards G and J may be kept nearly in contact with the piece of lumber which is being sawed, and all danger from pieces, splinters, or loose knots being thrown toward the operator is prevented. The head of the guard-bar G is slipped down from the top of the stand E. N is a cross-piece, by which the two upper ends of the stand are united, and is kept in place by the thumb-nuts O 0.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In combination with a circular saw, a guard consisting of the slotted guard-bar G and the slotted guard J, arranged substantially as shown and described, for the purposes set forth.
2. The guard formed as above described, in combination with the gage D.
3. The vertical plate M, in combination with the guard-bars G and J, substantially as shown and described.
OSCAR A. DEAN. Witnesses:
