exact description thereof, reference being" had to the .accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention is a novel mechanism for stampingl green hides, before placing same in the tanning liquors, in order to identify the particular kind of hide by the stamp; and also includes novel means for making `small incisions in the split halves of the hide to enable the two halves tobe readily tied together for subsequent treatment. d
lhe invention `is especially adapted for connection with the splitting horses on which the hides are usually `split preparatory to tanning; but may be used separately hereiuaon if desired.` e
ln the common method of stamping1 hides, after the green hide is thrown over the horse and before the hide is split, a die attached to the head ot a hammer-like instrunient is forcibly brought down upon the hide by successive strokes to impress the outline of the die in the surface of each half of the hide, the stamp being` usually made at the head end or butt end of the hide. After the stamping` thev operator splits the hide with a knife andthen customarily makes a small incision in each half of the hide with a short bladed knife, near the split therein to enable the` halvesof the hide to be tied together by a cord inserted through such :incisions whereby the halves of the hide are kept together during` the tanningl thereof.` e
My present `invention is particularly designed for use in connection with such hide splitting; horsesand enables both halves ofthe hide to be simultaneously stamped, and incisions to be simultaneously made in each half of the hide, to enable the halves to be tied together. i

The particular construction of the horse is not a feature of the `present invention; it may be of any suitable construction.
Adjacentene end of each bar A is a stamping,1 member-l, which is preferably attached to the upper end of a vertically disposed shaft ieguided in a sleeve lI attached to the adjacent bar A. The stamp member l is provided on its under side with a socket for the reception of a removable stamp or die S which can be secured thereto by a holt la; the face of the die S projects below the lower sidey of the member i, but is held by said member above the tcp of the har A, when shaft l is in normal position as in Figures l* and 2. Preferably a lead block 1l) is inserted in a recess in the upper side of each bar A below and adjacent the related die S and serves as a platen for such die. The member l may be formed on or fastened to the upper end of shaft Fin any suitable manner. Each shaft le, is preferably reduced in diameter below the sleeve lf, as at lg g and to the reduced portions lg are attached inembers or castings 2 (seelligure el) having arms 2", which are connected by a stout contractile helical spring 2E. The castings 2 have other arms 2", which project approximately at right angles to arms 27 and each arm 2b is connected by a link 2fto one arm of a bell crank lever 3, the other arm of which lever preferably carries roller 3 and engages the treadle lever hereinafter referred to.
Preferably each link 2t is pivotally connected to the head of a pin 2c engaging a vertical opening in the related arm 2"; and the other end of the link 2f is pivotally connected to a pin 3b in the end of the upper arm of the bell crank lever 3, these connections permitting relative oscillating and rocking movements of the arms and lever.
The lower end lg of each shaft le extends through an opening in a vertically movable bar d, and is suitably connected therewith so as to be moved thereby. Preferably a lball thrust bearing Ll is interposed between the upper side of the bar l and the casting 2; and a similar ball thrust bearing d 'is interposed between the underside of the bar 4f and a. collar lc on the lower end of part lg of the shaft below the bar, said collar being retained o n the shaft by a nut 1h, or other suitable means.
The bar l may be raised or lowered, to raise or lower the shafts le and stamp members l, by any suitable means. As shown an eye bolt 5 is attached centrally to the bar d, and to this eye bolt is pivotally connected the upper ends of links 5a which depend on opposite sides of an angular treadle lever. 6 and are pivotally connected to the knee of said lever as at 5b. The end of the short arm of this treadle lever is pivoted at 66L to suitable supporting bars 9 attached to the horse as shown. rllhe long arm 6b of the treadle lever extends upwardly and outwardly and has a fiat upper edge which is engaged by the roller 3 of the lever 3 (see Figure l).

On the outer end of rod 7 is hung a plate 7b to which are connected stout contractile springs 8, the outer ends of which are connected to a plate 8a attached to a convenient part of the frame or base as shown. Any other suitable arrangement of springs may be usedto hold the stamp carrying members l and the treadle normally in elevated position, as in Figure 1.

The hide can be split while the stamps are held engaged therewith and this assists in keeping the sulit or cut straight, so that the eut ed ges of the halves when tanned are straight instead of irregular.
Any other suitable means may be eniployed to cause the shafts or stamping members to turn toward each other or the renter line of the horse as they arc depressed, and to separate as they are elevated.

After the impressions and incisions have been made, and preferably while the hide is clamped by the stamps, the hide may be slitted from head to tail by the operator drawing a sharp knife lengthwise between the two top bars of the horse.
Some of the advantages of my invention are: the stamps are made exactly in the same place on each half of `each hide; they are thoroughly legible; the work isuniform; the stamping is greatly facilitated; as the operator by simply depressing the treadle performs o erations that heretofore ordinarily require four operations by hand, to wit, picking up a hammenwith die inserted in the face, striking each side once with the hammer and then laying down the hammer. Additional advantages are the simultaneous making of the slits or incisions in the halves of the hide, at the same time the stamps are made with `no eXtra work on the part of the operator; the mechanism is simple and no special skill .is required by a workman to operate it; and the parts are automatically returned to original position by the ,springs when the treadle is released.

5.` An attachment for a hide splitting horse comprising1 a movable member attached to the horse; means to depress said member; spring means for normally holding1 the member in raised position; and means for turning the member as it rises and lowers.
6. A stamping attachment for a hide splitting horse comprising a pair of movable members attached `to the horse; a treadle and connections adapted to depress the members;
and spring means for normally holdingthe treadle `and members in raised position; with means for turningthe members toward each other as they moveto operative position and forturning them away from each other as they move away from operative position.

In combination a stamping member, a shaft carrying said member; a pivotally supported treadle; an adjustableconnection between the treadle and the shaft for operatingthe member, and springs for returning the shaft `to normal position with means for turning the stamping member in one direction as it is moved to operative position and means for turning the stamping member in the opposite direction as it is raised from o iierative position.

A hide splitting horse, a member connected to the horse: a shaftcarryingsaid member and depenfling below the horse` a device carried by said member; a treadle pivotally supported on the horse; a connection between the treadle and the shaft for operating the latter; springs for returning the shaft and member to normal position, and means for turning the member in one direction as it is moved to operative position and for turning the member in the opposite direction as it is aised from operative position. i i

A hide splitting horse having` parallel top bars; a pair of members mounted on the horse adjacent one end of the bars; spring means for normally holding the said members in raised position; and means `for simultaneously depressing the said members; with means for turning the members toward each llO other as they move to operative position and for turning them away from each other as they move away from operative position.

A stamping mechanism comprising a longitudinally and rotatably movable shaft, a stamping member carried thereby, means for depressing the shaft so as to operate the stamp member, and means whereby the shaft is turned in one direction when the stamp is moved. to impress the hide and turned in the opposite direction when-the stamp is retracted.
11. A stamping mechanism comprising a stamping member, a longitudinally movable shaft carrying said member, means for reciprocating said shaft, and means whereby the shaft is turned in one direction when it is lowered to bring'- the stamp to operative position and is turned in the opposite direction when raised to turn the stamp away from operative position.
12. In combination stamping members, means for raising` and lowering the stamping members, means for causing the stamping members to approach each other as they are lowered, and means for causing the stamping members to separate as they move from operative position.

In combination a pair of vertically movable shafts, stamping members carried by said shafts, means for raising and lowering the shafts, a pair of arms connected with said shaft, a spring connected with said arms to rock the shafts in one direction, other arms connected with said shafts, and means connected with the latter arms whereby the shafts are rocked in opposition to the spring, substantially as described.

In combination, a pair of vertically movable shafts, members carried by said shafts and devices carried by said members, a treadle and connection for reciprocating the shafts, and means whereby when the shafts are lowered they are caused to turn and swing the devices toward each other as they approach operative position, and whereby the shafts are turned so as to swing` the said members away from each other as they are raised from operative position.

In mechanism of the character speciiied the combination of a horse, a pair of vertically movable shafts connected therewith, members carried by said shafts, means for raising and lowering the shafts, a pair of' arms connected with said shaft, a spring connected with said arms to turn the shafts in one direction, other arms connected with said, shafts and connections whereby the shafts are turned opposite to the spring, the shafts being turned so as to move the members toward each other as they are lowered to operative position, and the members being turned away from each other as they are raised from operative position 16. In combination a vertically movable shaft, a member on said shaft carrying a device, a treadle and connections for reciprocating the shaft, a spring connected with said shaft to turn it in one direction. an arm connected with the shaft and means connected with the latter arm whereby said arm is operated by the treadle when the latter rises, whereby when the shaft is lowered it is caused to swing the device toward operativo position, and whereby the shaft is turned so as to swing the said device away from operative position as it is raised.

In combination a pair of vertically movable shafts, members carried by said shafts, devices carried by said members. means for reciprocating` the shafts. arms connected with said shafts, a spring connected with said arms to canse the shafts to tu rn in one direction, other arms connectant with the shaft and means engaging the latter arms; whereby when the shafts are lowered they are caused to rotate to swing the devices toward each other as they approach operative position, and are turned so as to swing the said devices away from each other as they are raised from operative position.

A mechanism comprising a longitudinally and rotatably movable shaft. a member carried thereby, a critter carried by said. member, means for delnessing the shaft so as to operate the member, and means whereby the shaft is turned in one direction when the member is moved to canse the cutter to incise the hide and turned in the opposite direction when the member is retracted.
