SWAIN, citizens oil. the United States, residing-at Atlanta, in the. county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful. improvements in; Noiseless Blowers for Locomo- 'tives; and we do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and er-zactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

It is the object of: the present invention to avoid this nuisance and at the same time to cause the smoke to be drawn through the staclr at its maximum capacity and practically noiseless.

supply of steam bcinc regulated through a valve .rnechanisni within control oi the fire-v ll hen the locomotive stops and it is dc sired to maintain an artificial draft, the operator by turning on the live steam may cause the same to be jetted through the nozzles into the smoke stack and thereby distributing the suction area caused by the in jection of the steam intovarious parts of the smoke stack, and which will cause smoke from the furnace to be drawn through the stack to the limit of its capacity, and owing to the breaking up of the jets of steam by their being directed at dilierent angles to one another into the smoke stack, the noise incident to the escaping steam is muiiled and reduced to a minimum.
By the provision of the apparatus em bodying the features of our invention, it has been demonstrated by experience that the combustion of the fuel is greatly accelerated, and effecting also an appreciable saving of fuel.
lVhat we claim to be new is:
1. The combination with a locomotive smoke box of a stack leading therefrom and provided with a funnel at its inlet'end and. a jet ring the center of which lies in the extendedaxis of the stack, said jet ring provided with nozzles inclined toward the axis in position to deliver actuating; lluid in directions parallel to the walls of the tunnel and lying in a cone the apex ol which is within the stack.
2. The combination with a locomotive smoke box of a stack leadingtherefrom and provided with a funnel at its inlet end. a main exhaust nozzle, an unpartitioned tubular jet ring the center of which lies in the extended axis of the stack, and a passage between the main nozzle and the jet ring. said jet ring provided with nozzles in juxtaposition to the funnel and inclined toward the axis in position to deliver actuating lluid in directions parallel to the walls of the turn nel and lying in a cone the apex of whichis within the stack.
