Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Misty 23, i922@ Application led March. 27, 1919. Serial No. 2e5,558.
To all whom 't 021,04/ concern Be it known that ll, JOHN C. BoHMiisn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradley, in the count of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful llmprovemcnts in Plowshares, ofv
which the following is a specification.
T he invention relates to plow shares, and has for its object the provision of a plow share. having a point of great strength so that 1t shall not become broken in use, and which at the same time is capable of effectively withstanding the excessive wear to which it is subjected in use. y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a plow share embodying the features of my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detached views of the share blade and landside. Figs.' 4- and 5 are detached views of wear receiving members to be Secured Lto the share blade and landside to protect them against wear. Fig. 6 is a sectional View off the completed share, taken Y in the plane of line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
As illustrated in the drawings, the plow share comprises'a share blade 1 and a. separately formed landside 2. The share blade is provided with the usual apertures 3 for -receivingbolts for securing the share to the mold board of a plow. Preferably said blade is made of a three-ply steel plate, presenting outer surfaces of relatively hard steel, while the landside is made of relatively soft steel, and the two parts are adapted to be permanently secured together as by welding. To this end the landside is r provided at its upper edge with Lan inwardly extending flange 4 and it gradually decreases in height toward its forward end' until it merges with its flange to form a flattened end plate 5. ln Fig. 3 the shape of the landside and its flange is indicatec` by broken lines.
Before the share blade and the landside are secured together they are each provided at their forward ends with a wear plate of hardened steel. Thus, the share blade is provided with a plate 6 shaped as shown in ward end to form depressions 9 and 10 in its outer and under sides to receive the wear plates 8al and 8b, respectively, of the angular member 8, and the member is then welded in position on the landside. ln order that the plates 6 and 8a and 8b shallupresent with the adjacent faces of the share blade and of the landside a substantially iat surface` they are' preferably made sharp wor pointed at thelr rear ends, as shown at 11 and 12 (Figs. 4 and 5). v
lWhen the plate 6 and member 8 have been secured to the share blade and landside, respectively, the parts/are ready to be assembled. This' is accomplished by welding, the parts being placed together in the proper relationship between suitable dies (not shown) and finally shaped and secured togetherto form the plow point which may then be'ground to the desired finish.
As shown at 13 in Fig. 6, a portion of the metal of the wearY plate 8L is forced around the underside of the landside into engagement with the inner side thereof, thus further protecting the landside against wear. Moreover, in positioning the parts for the final welding operation the share blade is so arranged with reference to the landside that its outer edge overlaps or abuts the upper edge of the wear plate 8a. Thus the landside becomes enclosed within a sheath of hardened steel formed by the share blade and member 8. I
It will be apparent that I have `provided a plow share of a very practical character,
vas well as an advantageous method of making the same. The forward end of the land side constitutes a core Vof relatively soft steel, lending strength to the point to prevent breakage. Furthermore, the plate 6 and member 8 form wear plates of hard steel which serve to effectively protect the upper surface of the share blade, as well as the outer and under sides of the landside.
li claim as my invention:
1. plow share constructed to provide a point having a central reinforcing metallic core and an outer wear1'ec,eiving sheath, I
said share comprising a landside of relatively soft metal constituting at its forward end the core of the point, a share blade of hardened material welded upon the upper side of the landside with a portion project' ing beyond the outer side of the landside, and a wear-receiving member also of hardened material and Welded to the landside with a portion abutting the under side of Said projecting portion of the share blade and the outei surface of such abutting portion flush with the outer edge of the blade and the outer surface of the landside rearwardly of said member.
2. A plow share constructedfo provide a point having a central reinforcing metallic core and an outer Wear-receiving sheath, Said Y share comprising a landside of relatively soft metal constituting at its forward end
