SAFETY AND MATCH BOX.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1922.
I Application filed May 5, 1921. Serial No. 166,958.
-with a particular formation and arrangement of the cover of the safety box.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly'set forth. I v
F 1 of the drawings is a plan view of a safety box embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a part side elevation and part longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. '3'is a detail face view of the rotary barrel forming oneof the elements of the lock. 1
Fig. 1 is a side view thereof,
Fig. 5is a similar view to Fig. 1, but show ing the locking means disengaged.
6 is a detail plan view of the movable cover plate by which the main locking bolt is operated.
Fig. 7 is a transverse section on the line 77 of Fig. 6.
My improved box comprises a body of which the side walls are indicated at 10. and the end walls at 11 and 12 respectively. Near the end wall 12 a transverse partition 13 is provided, dividing the box into a large chamber 14 and a small chamber 15. the end wall 12 having an opening therein closed by a glass pane 16.
The cover of the box is shown at 18, being hinged at one end to swing laterally. As here shown the end wall 11 has an inwardly projecting flange 19 on its upper end to which the cover 18 is hinged, midway between the sides of the box, as at 20. The end wall 12 also presents an inturned flange 21 at its upper end which projects under the adjacent end of the cover. this end wall and the cover also presenting the dovetailed engaging surfaces 22 which are curved concentric to the hinge axis of the cover.
Upon the top of the cover 18 is hinged a plate 25, the cover being recessed to accommodate this plate which extends the full width of the cover and from the hinged end thereof to within a short distance from the opposite end, this latter end of plate 25 being cut off diagonally as shown at 26 and presenting a tongue 27 which engages in a groove in the adj ac-ent shoulder on the cover formed by the recess in which the plate is located. The plate 25 is preferably hinged as at 28 a short distance in front of the hinge pointof the cover 18.
engages in a registering socket 33 in the end wall 12 of the box. The rear end of the bolt 31 is pivoted to a pin 34: fixed in the plate 25- and extending downwardly through an arcuate slot 35 in the cover 18. the bolt being located toward one side of the box, and the pin 34 being in substantial trans-verse alinement with the hinge pin 28 of the plate.
The plate 25 is locked in its normal position, with the bolt engaging 31 in the socket 33 by means of a pin 37 fixed therein and projecting into an aperture 38 in said plate and engaging in a circular groove 39 in the face of a disk 40 provided with an integral knob extension 11, this disk and knob being supported by a bearing element 42 slidably held on the plate 25 by means of pins or rivets 13 fixed therein and taking into longitudinal slots 14 in the plate 25. A slot 45 leads inwardly from the periphery of the disk 10 to the groove 39.
The disk 4E0 extends downwardly into one end of an arcuate slot 47 in the cover 18 which is curved concentric to the hinge axis of the plate 25, the end of the slot being offset as at 4.8 to form a shoulder 49 which normally engages the disk and prevents the plate being swung outwardly, the disk being notched as at50 to enable it to clear said shoulder when set at a certain position.
Upon the knob 4:1 are a series of indicating letters 51 the proper ones of which are adapted to be brought into registry with a mark 52 on the bearing element 42.
Secured to this bearing element 42 is a second bolt 54 which is slidable in a suitable slot in the plate 25 and engages in a socket 55 in the cover 18.
The manner of opening the box is as follows: When the cover is in place and locked, the bolts 31 and 54: are engaged in the sockets 85 and 55 respectively, so that plate 25 and cover 18 are both held against displacement, while pin 37, by its engagement with groove 89 prevents the bolt 5% being drawn back.
By setting the knob 41, first to the proper letter, the slot l5 leading into groove 39 is brought into registry with the pin 37, permitting the disk 40, bearing element 42 and bolt 54 to be drawn back. \Vhen thus drawn back the disk 40 enters the offset 48 from slot 4L7 so that swinging movement of the plate 25 is prevented until the notch 50 has been set to the proper position. The plate 25 is then swung to one side, the pin 34: thereon pulling the bolt 31 backwards, thus releasing the cover.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows 1. A safety box having a hinged cover, a plate hinged to said cover, a bolt operated by said plate and holding said cover looked, a second bolt holding said plate locked to said cover, and a rotatable and slidable disk for controlling said last bolt.
2. A safety box having a hinged cover, a plate hinged to said cover, a bolt operated by said plate and holding said cover locked, a second bolt holding said plate locked to said cover, and a rotatable and slidable disk for controlling said last bolt, said disk having a circular groove in its face and a slot leading inwardly from the periphery of the disk to said groove, and a pin on said plate engaging in said groove.
3. A safety box having a hinged cover, a plate hinged to said cover, a bearing element slidable on said plate, a bolt connected to said bearing element and locking said plate to said cover, a disk mounted in said bearing element and having a circular groove in its face, and a slot leading from the periphery of the disk to said groove, a pin carried by the said plate and engaging in said groove, an arcuate slot in said cover into which said disk projects, said slot having an offset presenting a shoulder adapted to engage said disk and prevent swinging movement of the cover, said disk having a notch in its periphery whereby it may clear the said shoulder, and means operated by said plate for holding the cover closed.
4:. A safety box having a hinged cover, a plate hinged to said cover, a bearing element slidable on said plate, a bolt connected to said bearing element and locking said plate to said cover, a disk mounted in said hearing element and having a circular groove in its face, and a slot leading from. the periphery of the disk to said groove, a pin carried by the said plate and engaging in said groove, an arcuate slot in said cover into which said disk projects, said slot having an offset presenting a shoulder adapted to engage said disk and prevent swinging movement of the cover, said disk having a notch I IMRE HORVATH.
