Be it known that I, EDGAR 1V. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Manitowoc, in the county of Manitowoc and State of lVisconsin, have invented an Improved Lock Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locks and relates particularly to locks for the cell doors of safe-deposit boxes and the like, of the general type which forms the subject-matter of U. 'S. Letters Patent No. 1,486,925, dated November 28, 1922.
The object of the present invention is to provide improved, simplified and relatively inexpensive mechanism for actuating the auxiliary bolt or bolts positioned within the door to which the lock is applied, designed to safeguard the door from' being pried open.
To effect this object, a lock mechanism embodying my invention and improvements comprises the various features, combination of features and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings in which my invention is fully illustrated,
Figure 1 is a front view of a safe-deposit unit comprising two cells, one of said cells being shown complete and the door thereof being closed.
Figure 2 is a sectional plan view thereof, on the line 2+2 of Fig, 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional front view on the line 3*3 of Fig. 2.
Figure 4 is a detached rear view of a lock embodying my invention and improvements, showing the means for actuating the auxiliary bolts, positioned in the wall of the cell door; and
Figures 5 and 6 are detached views of parts of the mechanism for actuating said auxiliary bolts.
Referring now to the drawings, A designates as a whole, the casing of a safe-deposit unit, comprising top and bottom walls 1 and 2, side walls 3, and a rear wall, not shown. The interior of the unit A is divided by a partition or partitions 4 into cells 5, the front sides of which are closed by doors 6 pivoted at one edge to hinge pins 7. The doors 6 are adapted to be secured in closed position by locks 8 secured to the inner sides of said doors in proper 1923. Seri-a1 N'o. 623,087.

As regards their usual features, and excepting as hereinafter particularly described and pointed out, a safe deposit unit f my invention may be of any desired or approved construction, and will readily be understood by persons familiar withthe art from an examination of the drawings and without a description thereof in detail.
Also, each unit A may have any desired number of cells 5, the sizes of whieh may vary according to requirements.
In addition to the locking bolt 9, a lock mechanism embodying my invention coinprises auxiliary bolts 11 and 12 which are slidably fitted, respectively, to holes 13' and 1A formed in the door 6, substantially par allel with the hinge pins 7 and which are respectively adapted to engage holes 15 and 16 formed in the top and bottom walls 1 and 2, respectively, of the unit A.
The casing of the lock 8 is secured to the inner side of the door by means of screws 17 and secured to the inner side thereof is a bar 18, the inner ends of which are adapted to rest in contact with shoulders formed on the top and bottom walls of the unit A, the shoulder on the bottom wall being shown at 19, Fig. 2. Said bar 18 safeguards the lock 8 from being driven inwardly into the cell 5 by stripping the threads of the screws 1'?, all as fully described in said U. S. Patent. No. 1,436,925.
As shown, the main bolt 9 of the lock 8 is of the usual type adapted to be operated by means of separate keys, comprising a master key which remains in the possession of the vault attendant, adapted to engage a key slot formed in the barrel 20 of the lock 8, and a second key which is delivered to and remains in the possession of the proprietor of the box, adapted to engage a key slot formed in the key barrel 21, said key barrels 20 and 21 being rotatably mounted in housings 22 and 23, respectively, which engage holes formed in the door 6, the ends thereof extending substantially flush with the outer side of said door.
As regards the mechanism for actuating the main bolt 9 of the lock 8, said lock may be made of any usual or approved con` struction. Locks suitable for the purpose may be purcl ased commercially and said oper f iecsianism need not, theretore, be desc ni detail.
