UNITED STATES" EDWARD 'rnos'r. or aaoxsonvinnn, FLORIDA.
ESCAPEMENT MECHANISM.
Application filed February. 10, 1920. Serial No. 357,496.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatEnwARn Tnosr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jacksonville, in thecounty of Duval and State of Florida, has invented new and useful Improvements in Escapement Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide anefficient escapement mechanism especially adapted for watches and clocks of the balance-wheel type whereby anaccuracy of vibration and uniformity of timing function may besecured with the minimum possibility of disarrangement of the elements due to jarring or other outside influences, and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front view of the mechanism.
Figure 2 is aside view of the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the plane indicated by the line of Figure 2.
Figure 4: is a detail view of the safety roller and table.
Figure 5 is a similar view of the escape ment lever.
Figure 6is a similar view of the escapement fork.
The mechanismconsists essentially of the escapement lever 10 fulcrumed at 11 wlth its arms 12 in operative relation with the teeth of the escapement wheel 13, and a roller table 14; carrying a safety roller 15 and provided with an impulse pin 16 in operative relation with an escapement fork 17, said roller-table being carried by the balance staif 18 to which may be attached the usual balance wheel 19 and balance spring 20. The escapement fork which is carried by the upper extremity of the escapement lever consists of the inwardly divergent prongs 21 shown clearly in Figure 3 and the impulse pin 16 is preferably of cross-sectionally triangular form for alternate knife edgecontact with the annular preferably convexcd surfaces of the prongs under the impulse derived from the balance spring acting through the balance staff and roller table, while the yoke 22 of the escapement lever which operates in the plane of and spans the safety roller 15 is provided with a safety pin 23 for peripherally traversing the safety roller through a notch or cut-away portion 24: therein. The path of movement of the escapement fork is shown by the dotted line 25 in Figures 1 and while the direction of movement of the impulse pin is shown by the dotted line 26 in Figure 3, it beinp obvious that thesafety pin 23 in traversing the safety roller passes at each vibration through the notch or cut-out portion of the safety roller which is disposed in a position to prevent an excessive movement of the escapement lever.
v The disposition of the safety roller 15 in the plane of the escapement lever 10 makes for a'construction relieving the latter of any torsional or twisting strain 1n the event that the safety pin impinges on the periphery of the safety roller, as mightoccur in the event of atoo greatstroke being imparted to the escapement lever. I vides for the resumption of the normal position of the parts without any tendency to twist the escapement lever with resultant probable damage to either the fork or the impulse pin. Were the safety roller, as is usual, disposed in some other plane than that of the lever, any engagement of the safety pin 23 with the periphery of the roller would tend, because of the point of strainbeing ofl'setfrom the point of resistance (which is the pivot point 11) to create the torsional or twisting strain of the lever above referred to.
What is claimed is:
The arrangement pro Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 16, 1922 1. An escapement mechanism having in combination with the balance staff and escapement wheel, an escapement lever provided at its free end with a fork and having an intermediate yoke, a roller table carried by the balance staff and having an impulse pin for engagement by said fork, a safety a roller carried by the balance staff in the plane of the yoke of the escapement lever,
and a safety pin carried by the escapement lever for traversing a safety notch in the said roller.
2. An escapement mechanism having in combination with the balance staff and an escapement wheel, an escapement lever provided at its free end with a fork having inwardly divergent prongs, a roller table carried by the balance staff and having an imsafety pin carried by the escepement lever in traversing relation with a safety notch in said. roller.
In testimony whereof he affixes his signature.
