GEORGE GLENN COOPER, OF HILLEBOEO, ILLINOIS,
TBIOLLEY GUARD.
Application filed October '2', 1921.
To all 107mm may cone-(amt:
Be it known that GEORGE GLENN Coornn, citizen of the United States, residing at Hillsboro, in the county of Montgomei y and State of Illinois, has invented a certain new and useful Trolley Guard, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in what may be termed trolley wire crossing guards.
The invention has for its object to provide for safety at trolley-rail crossings or junctions.
A further object is to provide for carrying out the aforesaid end or purpose in an effective and inexpensive manner.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description of the construction and application thereof and the annexed illustration.
The invention therefore consists of certain instrumentalities and features of construction substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed and defined by the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings is illustrated the preferred embodiment, or one form of my invention, wherein it will be understood that various changes or modifications as relate to the detailed construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention as covered by the claims, and in which drawings- Figure I is a side elevation of my invention, parts being broken away:
Figure II is a vertical central section:
Figure III is a transverse section of the same taken on the line 33 of Figure II.
In carrying out my invention I employ a casing or shell with an opening 2 through its upper end having walls suitably screwthreaded as at 2 to provide for the attach- Inent thereto, as by the screw 4, of the overhead preferably wooden hanger or bracket 5, as for instance in a mine.
Connection is effected between the casing or shell 1 and the trolley wire suspending clamp 6, preferably by means of a bolt 7, provided with a nut 8, adapted to be turned into contact or engagement with the trolley wire clamp 6 and hold the bolt 7 effectively in tightened position to the trolley wire clamp. The bolt 7 extends some distance Specification of Letters Patent.

into the shell or casing 1 as shown, and, around the bolt. the casing is filled in with a suitable insulating material 9, as hard rubher or other material suitable for the purpose, said insulation being designed. to render the bolt connection immune from contact with the casing or shell.
Extending laterally about midway from the casing or shell 1, upon each side thereof, is a horizontal arm or member 10, preferably cast or formed therewith, said arms be ing provided with plates or disks 11, adapted to serve in the capacity of washers, also with screw-threads l1 at their outer ends having threaded thereon nuts 12. 'These arms in practice have suitably applied or attached thereto, between, and held by the washer-forming disks and nuts, a curtainlike-forming piece of textile material not shown) to serve as a guard, as ordinarily practiced. The curtain or textile member is intended to depend from the ends of the arms, somewhat below and parallel with the trolley wire, and to extend to the adjacent or next guard-hanger (not shown). This guard-hanger (the term referring to the whole structure as a single unit) will, after being locked down into effective position, be retained in such position, with the arms extending away from, or out of contact with the trolley wire, against possibility of accidental displacement or disarrangement.
From the foregoing it is considered that the advantage and benefits of my invention and its practical application have been made clearly apparent and appreciable.
Having thus described. my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device of the type described, including a casing, a trolley wire clamp, an insulated means of connection between said casing and said trolley wire clamp, said casing having laterally extending arms provided with integral washer-forming members, means threaded upon said arms adapted to function with said washer-forming members for the attachment of guards to said arms, and an overhead suspending member for said casing.
2. A device of the type described, includ ing a casing provided with arms laterally extending in the plane of said casing and adapted to provide for the attachment of guards thereto, an overhead suspelildhlg bracket for uzu'd easing, a, trolley Wire clamp and an insulated means of connection be tween said casing and trolley Wire clamp, 5 said connecting means being threaded into said trolley Wire elznnp and itself provided with a. leek-nut connection With said clamp.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE GLENN COOPER.
