IMPROVEMENT IN STOPPERS FOR BOTTLES CONTAINING INFLAMMABLE LIQUIDS. 86c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,628, dated August 12, 1873 application filed June 11, 1873.
the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whichwill enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing formin g part of this specification, which drawing represents a vertical central section of my invention.
This invention consists in providing a vessel designed for containing inflammable and other liquids with a screw-neck to receive a solid nipple, the upper terminus of said screwneck forming the support for a coiled spring which has its upper seat in a recess formed in the valve having a projection, by which means the valve can be forced down or from its seat and a small portion of the liquid allowed to escape, and as soon as the nipple is relieved, from pressing the valve, it returns to its seat and the vessel becomes sealed.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a vessel which is provided with a spout, B, that is connected to the neck of the vessel by a screw-thread. The mouth a of the spout B is conical, and it forms the seat for a valve, 0, that is made of gutta-perch or any other suitable material, and which is forced up against its seat by means of a spring, D, the lower end of which bears upon the edge of the neck of the vessel, while its upper end extends into a cavity, 1), in the body of the valve, so as to retain the same securely in position. From the valve extends a solid nipple, 0, through the aperture of the mouth a, and if it is desired to discharge a portion of the contents of the liquid contained in the vessel the nipple is depressed upon the surface, which is to be moistened, so that the valve is forced back from its seat and the liquid is free to discharge. As soon as the nipple isrelieved from pressure the valve closes and the vessel becomes hermetically sealed. 7
This arrangement is of particular advantage for vessels containing benzine or other liquids of a similar nature generally used by printers for cleaning their type, and by providing such vessels with my stopper the waste of liquid is effectually prevented, and all danger that the liquid might catch fire and cause an explosion is avoided.
I do not broadly claim a vessel in which the valve is pressed up into its month by a spring, as such is old; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The vessel A having a screw-neck to receive the nipple B having a conical mouth-piece, the upper thread or terminus of the screwneck forming a seat for the spring D, as shown, in combination with each other and with the valve 0 having the seat B and nipple c, all constructed and arranged as herein shown, for the purpose specified.
