To all whom. it may concern.
Be it known that I, DANIEL F. MGGILL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprinklers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sprinklers in general, and particularly to that type of sprinkler known as lawn sprinklers, and adapted for sprinkling lawns, gardens and the like, the object of my invention being to provide a'sprinkling device that may be set in any desired position and will then automatically cover a large. surface area with fine spray, that is cheap to manufacture and simple to operate.
I accomplish the above object by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a part of this application for Letters Patent, like characters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views thereof, and in which;
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my device partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the operating parts thereof.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the rotating member.
In general my device consists of a standard adapted to be inserted into the ground as a supporting member, a vaned wheel having a planetary movement about a vertical portion of said standard, and means whereby a stream of water may be continuously played upon said vaned wheel thereby causing the planetary movement thereof.
Said wheel 4 rotates in a vertical plane upon a shaft 5 to which the wheel is secured, and the vanes 6 are formed by cutting slots 7 from the periphery of the wheel diagonally towards the center thereof, and bending the resulting vanes to an angle with the surface of the wheel, as shown in Fig. 2.
The shaft is rotatably mounted in bearings 7 integral with a rotating member, which rotating member is composed of said bearings 7, a hub 8, arms 9 connecting said hub and said bearings, and an arm 10 pro jecting from said hub 8 substantially parallel to the axis of said bearings 7 and from the opposite side of said hub 8 therefrom, as shown indetail in Fig. 3.
Secured upon said shaft 5 and disposed between said bearings 7 is a worm 11.

composed of a vertical portion 12 adapted to be inserted some distance into the ground, a goose neck portion 13, and a depending portion 14: substantially vertical and coaxial with portion 12, as shown in Fig. 1. The hub 8 of the rotatable member is mounted upon the lower extremity of said portion 14: of the standard and is rotatably secured thereon by a collar 15. Upon said portion 1 1 of the standard, and immediately above the hub 8 of the rotating member is a worm gear 16 secured to said portion 1a by-a pin 17, and meshing with the worm 11, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
A flexible hose 18 is provided, into one en of which a nipple 19 is inserted and intothe opposite end of which a nozzle 20 is inserted. Said nipple 19 is supported from the portion 12- of the standard by a suitable clip 21, andbelow said clip the nipple is supplied with ahose coupling 22, whereto a hose may be attached. The nozzle 20 is rotatably mounted in the extremity of the arm 10 of the rotating member, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and is disposed so that the stream issuing therefrom may play upon the vanes 6 of the wheel 4. 7
"When the water is turned 011 the wheel l will rotate with the shaft 5, impelled by the stream of water playing upon the vanes thereof, and willthus cause rotation of the worm l1.
Norm 11 will thus be caused to rotate about the meshing worm gear 16, carrying with it the rotating member and the shaft 5 and wheel 4: mounted thereon.
The wheel 4 is thus caused to have a planetary movement, rotating rapidly upon the substantially horizontal shaft 5, and at the same time rotating slowly about the substan tially vertical portion 1 1 of the standard, the wheel 1 passing through the goose neck portion 13 of the standard in so doing.
The rotatable mounting of the nozzle 20 in the arm 10 prevents the twisting of the hose 1.8, and thus permits continuous rotation of the rotating member simultaneously with a continuous flow of water through said hose.
A forked member 23 is secured to the lower portion 12 of the standard adapted to be inserted into the ground therewith, and thereby secure said standard from rotation in the ground.
My device may be made of any size, and constructed of any materials deemed convenient and suitable for a device of this character, and while I have illustrated and described a form of construction and arrangement of parts found desirable in materializing my device, I wish to include in this application for Letters Patent all mechanical equivalents and substitutes that may fairly be considered to come within the scope and purview of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having disclosed my invention so that others may be enabled to construct and to use the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a sprinkler: a standard comprising a goose neck portion and a vertical portion'depending from said goose neck; a vaned wheel mounted upon said vertical portion; a nozzle adjacent said wheel; means to connect a hose with said nozzle; and means whereby a stream of water from said nozzle impinging upon said wheel causes the latter to have a planetary motion about said vertical portion of the standard.
2. In a sprinkler: a standard having a goose neck and a vertical member depending from said goose neck; a vaned wheel mounted upon said vertical member and having a planetary movement thereabout; and hydraulic means to operate said wheel.
3. In a sprinkler, a standard having a goose neck and a vertical portion depending therefrom; a worm wheel secured to said vertical portion of the standard; a rotary member mounted upon said vertical portion of the standard adjacent said worm wheel; a shaft rotatably mounted in said rotary member; a worm secured to said shaft and meshing with said worm wheel; a Vaned wheel secured to said shaft; a nozzle rotatably mounted in said rotatable member and adapted to direct a stream of water therefrom upon the vanes of said wheel; and flexible means to connect said nozzle with a hose to supply a continuous stream of water thereto.
l. In a sprinkler, a standard having a short depending vertical portion; a rotary member mounted adjacent the lower eX- tremity of said depending vertical portion of the standard; a vaned wheel rotatably mounted upon said rotary member; suitable gear connections between said wheel and said depending vertical portion of the standard to cause notation of said rotary member from the rotation of said wheel; and hydraulic means to cause rotation of said wheel.
5. In a sprinkler, a standard having therein a short depending vertical portion; a vancd wheel mounted upon said vertical portion; means to cause said wheel to have a planetary movement about said depending vertical portion of the standard; and hydraulic means to operate said wheel.
6. A standard adapted to be inserted into the ground and having a vertical member supported from said standard and depending therefrom; and hydraulically operated sprinkler means mounted upon said member and having a planetary movement thereabout.
