T 0 all to 7mm it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN A. MoREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVebster,- in the county of Burnett and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone attachments for Motor Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a telephone device for use in connection with motor vehicles.
One object of the present invention is to provide an attachment which is of such nature that it affords facilities for telephoning at any point along a highway during travel by motor.
One of the special features of the invention resides in the provision of an out-fit of this character which is so made that it. is capable of being stored in an exceedingly small space and yet is adapted for tapping into the telephone lines carried on the poles alongside of the highway.
The invention also includes means whereby one of the terminals of the telephone outfit may be'easily raised to the desired height for attachment of said terminal. to a wire carried b telephoue poles.
The invention furthermore provides means whereby a telephone lineman traveling along the highway may carry with him a compact outfit whereby he will be enabled. at any point. to get in touch with his home ofiice by simply attaching the device to one of the telephone lines.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention in use;
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the operator of a motor vehicle in the act of conn cting up the invention for use;
Figure 5 is a detail view showing the means for connecting the device into the tel ephone line;
Figure f is a detailed perspective view ofthe terminal attaching means.
The invention. as herein. shown-I or the purpose of disclosing the same, comprises a telephone set 1 having the connecting leads 2 and 3, the former of which is adapted to be connected to the ground of the circuit, such ground being effected by the use of a copper peg 4: with which the lead 2 is connected and which peg is firmly driven into the ground. It is also obvious that a good ground may be made by connecting the lead wire 2 withthe radiator or any other metal portion of the vehicle and then subsequently connecting the vehicle with the ground inhook 8 at its other end, said contact strip 7 being securely welded to a tubular ferrule 9 threaded as indicated at 10 at one end, said end being opposite the hook 8 and carrying a gunrliel 11 for purposes to be hereinafterset ort i.
A sectional pole 12 joined together as shown at 13 with threaded ferrules 14: is provided andhas its uppermost end adapt-ed tolengage the threads 10 of the tubular ferru e 9.
In using the device the operator of the vehicle first grounds the telephone set 1 by driving the peg 4 into theground, or otherwise. Next, the jointed sections 12 of the pole are secured together in the manner indicated at 13 and the upper end of the pole is screwed into the threads 10 of the ferrule 9, said threads fitting relatively loose so that after the ferrule 9 has been hung upon the funnel 11 which provides a large opening for initially receiving the end of the pole and directing itinto proper place.
The ferrule 9 constitutes a weight for holding the hook 8 in electrical contact with the wire and consequently is made of relatively heavy material while the contact strip '7 is preferably made of'copper to provide good conductivity: The conductivity of the ferrule 9 may he nil,
I claim: v i
In combination witla portable telephone set for tapping into a telephone line, lead wires one constituting a ground wire and the other a line connecting wire, a tube pro vided at one end with a pole centering funnel, and a longitudinally extending contact strip secured to the tube at one side thereof, said strip being provided'at one end with an eye accommodating the line connecting wire and at its opposite end with a hook to engage over a line wire.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN ARTHUR MOREN. [L. s.]
