IMPROVEMENT IN STEERING APPARATUS FOR VESSELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,598, dated August 5, 1873; application filed June 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMIE SIEBENTHAL, of Vevay, in the county of Switzerland and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Steering Apparatus, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved steering apparatus. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section of the rudder-post, showing connection with tiller.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to construct for river and ocean vessels an improved steering apparatus, by which the power transmitted to the rudder is equalized, and the same .more fully within the control of the helms man. My invention consists in the hinge connection of the tiller with the rudder-post, together with a supporting guide-arm of the same.
In the drawing, A represents a steeringwheel, which connects by rope B and sheaves O and G with the arch or other support D, containing a series of pulleys, over which the rope B is stretched. The tiller E swings along the arch D either above the rudder-post or below the same, as may be desired. The end of the tiller E, which swings along the arch D, is suitably mounted with a metallic eye, a, through which the ends of rope B pass 10 be connected sidewise to lugs 12 of the tiller. A strong arm, G, of suitable material, with eyes 01 at both ends, is connected by eye 0 of screw-bolt e to the upper tiller end, and by eye of screw-bolt f to support f. The
lower end of tiller E is pivoted at 9 into recess h of rudder-post F, which is cut centrally with annpward or downward inclination through the same, according as the upper tiller end swings above or below post F. Strong metallic side bands i, which are attached firmly to the sides of tiller E and post F by pivot 9, form a strong hinge connection of the tiller with the rudder-post.
In' turning the wheel A it will be observed that an even revolving of the same produces the swinging of tiller E along the arch D from the horizontal position at one side over the highest or lowestcentral point to the horizontal position at the other side.
The nearer the tiller approaches the center the quicker turns the rudder-post, so that the rudder moves rapidly when in position at either side of the axis of the vessel, where also less power is required. On the approach of the tiller to a horizontal position the rudder moves with decreasing speed, but with increasing power, as the pivoted arm G relieves the strain on the steering'rope by supporting the end of the tiller.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with wheel A, rope B, and
arch D, or its equivalent, the tiller E, arm G, hinge connection g 73, and rudder-post F, constituting the steering apparatus, substantially as set forth, for the purposes described.
