ADJUSTABLE AWNING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,651, dated August 16, 1881.
Application filed June 13, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS K. Mnnon, a citizen of the United States, residing in Butfalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Awnings for Canal-Boats, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient means for readily lowering an awn ing when the boat is about to pass under a bridge; and it consists of an awning-frame provided with a suitable awning and jointed to vertical supporting-bars, which bars are hinged to supports on the deck or cabin of the boat, in combination with acord or rope and pulley, whereby the man at the helm may instantly and easily drop or lower the awning, so it will lie horizontally on the deck or cabin of the boat, as will be more clearly hereinafter shown by reference to the drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation, showing the awning in its position when up for use, also a portion of a boat to which it is attached. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the position of the awning and frame-work when let down to allow the boat to pass under a bridge. Fig. 3 is a top view of the awning-frame and Fig. 4 represents a top view of a support for one of the vertical bars.

I) is the awning-frame, made of thin bars of wood or other suitable material in the ordinary manner. It is supported on four upright bars,
12, jointed thereto by bolts or pins 0. The lower ends are hinged by hinges 0 either to some suitable place on the deck of the boat or posts cl on the cabin. To strengthen the hinges 0 and protect the bars I) the posts (I are provided with a half-sleeve, (1, so that when said bars are up or in a vertical position the sides opposite the hinges e are held firmly in place.
The awning is lifted or lowered by means of the rope 0 connected to the deck or cabin at or about the point e, from which it passes up and around the pulley f, and from thence to some convenient holding devicef, where it is tied or otherwise fastened Within easy reach of the man at the helm, the arrangement being such that the awning is kept in a horizontal position during all parts of its movement up or down.
The operation will be readily understood from the drawings.
It desired, the arrangement of the hinges may be reversed, so that the awning may he made to move in the opposite direction while being let down.
I claim as my invention- An adjustable awning for canal-boats, consisting of the awning-frame I), jointed to supporting-bars b, and hinged to a suitable support, substantially as specified, in combination with the rope e, pulleyf, and holding device f, for the purposes described.
