Specificationof Letterslatentm; t t 9, 1922 Application filed June: 15, 1920.. Serial No. 389,167.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW KENnnonr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of'Cuyahog'a and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n combination locks and has for an object the provision of a lock of this type which is simple in construction and which may vnot be opened by persons unfamiliar with the combination.
Another object is the provision of a combination lock which includes indicia carrying dials or disks, means being provided for rearranging or transposing the indicia characters, whereby the combination may be changed.
With the above and other objects, in view, the invention further. includes the a following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.-.
In thedrawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a lock embodyin the present invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged transverse section with the parts in position to permit of the retraction of the locking bolt.
Figure 3 is a view 'similarto Figure 2,.
i with the parts in locked position, or in position whereby the operation of the locking bolt will be prevented.
Figure 4 is a section on the line H of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a plan view of one of the indicia carrying disks with certain of the indicia blocks removed.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a lock casing which is preferably of rectangular shape and which is open at one side and provided with a cover or closure plate 11, the latter being secured to the casing 10 in any suitable manner and provided adjacent to its upper edge with a centrally disposed indicating arrow 11'.
The casing is provided with a central opening 12, while the cover plate 11 is provided with an opening 13 whose diameter is larger than the opening 12.
transversely within the member 14.
Eiiteniling from the opening 12 in the @3- ing 10 andfthe opening 131m the closure.
face 'o'fthe casing 10,while the opposite end,
of the member 14 is closed by a threaded cap 16. a 2 I Mounted for sliding movement within the casing .11 is alocking bolt '17 whichis capable of being projected beyond the end. of the casingfor engagement with a suitable keeper, (not shown) andof being retracted within the casing. For the purpose of op" erating this bolt thereis provided a disk 18 which is mounted upon the 'hollow cylindrical member,- 14 and" is capable of rotation thereon. This disk is provided with a lug 19 having a slot formed therein which receives a pivot carried by the bifurcated end of the shank 20 of the locking bolt 17 Thus, a moveinent of the disk 18 will actuate the bolt 17 Also mounted upon the hollow cylindrical member 14, "and upon the outside of the casing I10,;and capableof rotation on 'the said member are disks 21. Any desired numberof these disks may be employed; vIn the drawings, two of the disks 21 are shown and these dlsks are proyided upon their marginal edges with indicia which may be in the form of either numbers or letters or both. This indicia is preferably carried by 1 disks 21 are provided with transversely disposed notches 23, while the vided with a notch 24.
Mounted within the hollow cylindrical member 14 is a sectional rod 25,, the adjacent disk 18 is proends of the sections being connected by an oval shaped spring 26 which is arran ed ne end of the sectional rod 25 is provided with a head 27, while the opposite end is provided with a knurled knob 28. Secured to the bowed spring 26 is a dog 29 which is adapted to operate through a slot 30 arranged longitudinally of the hollow cylindrical member 14 so as to permit the dog to engage the notches 23 and 24of the disks 21 and 18 respectively. When thus engaged the bolt 17 may be operated by rotatingthe'hollow cylindrical member 14.
In the operation of the lock, assuming that the parts are in position to prevent the operation of the locking bolt, the disks 21 are rotated to bring the proper numbers or let-'- ters upon their edges into proper register with the arrow on the plate 11 so as to register the notches 23. These disks are then rotated simultaneously until the notches 23 therein register with the slot 30 in the hollow cylindrical.member 14;. A slight outward movement of the dog 29 will then occur so that the member and disks 21 will be locked together. This initial engagement is vdue to the irregular outer edge 29am the dog 29. The rotation of the member 14 is then continued until the slot 30 and notch 24 of'the disks 18 register, whereupon the dog will be forced outward under the action of the spring 26 to engage the notch in the disk 18 so that all or" the disks and the member 14L- will then be locked together. The locking bolt 17 may then be operated by revolving the member 14. y
In ord r to disengage the dog 29 from the disks, the knurled knob 28 is drawn outward so that the dog will be retracted within the slot 30, whereupon the disks 21 may be revolved independently. ,Vhen it is desired to change the combination certain of the blocks 22 may be transposed so that their numbers or characters will indicate registration of the notches of thedisks.
The invention is susceptible or various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
casing and provided with an indicating arrow, a hollow cylindrical member extending through the openin 's in said casing and said cover and provided with a longitudinally extending slot, a flanged head extending from one end of said member and en gaging said casing, a threaded cap removably secured to the opposite end of said member, a locking bolt mounted for sliding movement within the casing and provided with a shank having bifurcated ends a disk rotatably mounted upon said cylindrical member, having a notch formed therein and provided with a slotted lug pivotally secured to the bifurcated end of the shank of said lock belt, a plurality of disks rotatably mounted upon said cylindrical member upon the outside of said casing provided upon their marginal edges with indicia and having notches formed therein, a sectional rod located in said hollow cylindrical member and extending through said head and said cap, an oval shaped spring secured to the adjacent ends of the sections of said rod, a knurled knob secured to one end oi said rod, said sectional rod at the opposite end thereof engaging the head of said cylindrical member, and a dog secured to said spring and adapted to engage the notches in said disk.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ANDREW KENDECHY.
